Worst Overpushed Wrestler Of The 90s

In This Thread I Want To Know Who Do You Think Was Terribly Overpushed And No Matter How You Pushed Him He Wasn't Going to Get Over!

My Choice Is Going To Have To Be Erik Watts : Why Was This Guy In Wrestling I Mean He Fueds With A Guy Named Arn Anderson (Erik Watts Couldn't Lace His Boots ) And Was Severely Overpushed By His Father Bill Watts Because He Was Booker Of WCW

The Fans See That And This Guy Couldn't Get Over If His Life Depended On It Plain And Simple!

NEPOTISM AT ITS FULLEST BEING DISPLAYED

Ultimate Warrior was so bad that people constantly had to job to him in like 45 seconds in order to make this guy look like a big deal... he had no in-ring ability and his promos rarely made sense, he just ran to the ring and had whoever he was facing put him over for the whole match

maybe not the worst, but Luger's All American push in 93 was pretty bad. Such a huge build up after body slamming Yoko, but after the disqualification win at summerslam, there was nowhere to go from there.

Now, although I found him to be entertaining, and great for wcw at the time, "wrestling" wise, Goldberg was pushed to the moon. He was intense and believable as a monster, but watching a match beyond a few minutes could be brutal.

I'd have to go with WCW's version of a rockstar Van Hammer!

This guy was beyond horrible. no matter what faction he was with he was a joke in the ring and on the mic. Hell in The Flock even Lodi was more over than him!

For me its gotta be DDP the guy was a giant skud bomb at best. Couldn't cut a promo, I couldn't stand to watch his matches, and he always seemed to get the high profile stories. I never could understand why and to this day I still can't DDP= shit pure shit and skud

For me it's Mick Foley ! Horrible worker, if he wasn't getting hit with a chair or falling off a ladder or jumping off a cage he was lost ! His promo's are vastly overrated and his Mankind gimmick and mask were beyond stupid to me !

I'd say Mable after winning the King of the Ring in 95. He main evented SummerSlam that year against Diesel for the Title, then spent the fall feuding with the Undertaker and SUCKED. Shawn Michaels, Razor Ramon, even Owen Hart could have won again, yetvthey gave it to Mable? What The Fuck?!?!?!

There's 2 I can think of right off the bat. One is Glacier, who was in WCW around the time Mortal Kombat was popular so he dressed like sub zero. He was undefeated for like over a month and was absurd.

The worst would have to be David Flair. He had no charisma and no in ring ability. He should never have been on television. Youtube his match with El Dandy and you'll see what I'm talking about.

GOLDBERG....GOLDBERG....GOLDBERG...
flash in the pan. talk about one trick pony. if u thought john cena gets away with his "5 moves of doom"(or whatever they call it), u should see this guy. i swear ive seen matches....jobber entrance..long drawn out entrance...smoke breathing...flashy pyro..(bell rings).....spear....jackhammer...game...set...match. are you serious?!?! talk about having the wrestling world by the balls eh?!?!

Now hold on i think were getting away from the topic, you guys are stating people you didn't like. The topic is overpushed wrestlers who couldnt get over with the fans, some examples people gave ultimate warrior, foley, ddp, goldberg, these guys were definitly overpushed but they get over with the fans. Everybody loves mick foley he can't wrestle for shit but if he appeared on raw people would go nuts. King Mable was a good example of somebody in the 90's that wwe tried to push but couldn't, another guy would be wwe version Vader. When Vader came to wwe he was pushed hard, he squashed gorrila monsoon, main evented summerslam, the fans just never bought into his shit and mid card right after.

id say Triple H was the most overpushed wrestler. He only got what he did because of his relationship and eventual marriage to Stephanie. All you smarks use the same old line that he was on the rise or that he would have been champ eventually because he had the goods but i disagree. The Triple H before Stephanie (August 99 when things officially started with them..but things might have unofficially been going for some time) was much different than the Triple H of a few years later. If your with the bosses daughter you have all the confidence in the world. Your gonna get pushed, you know your gonna win titles, you know you can milk that for everything its worth. Triple H is the most business savy guy in wrestling, what Jay Z is to rap latching on to Beyonce.
Without their women, both guys are just average. Triple H is overrated and was overpushed. No wrestler of today deserves 13 world titles, not even Rock or Stone Cold. Triple H should have taken the Jake Roberts route and feuded for the intercontinental title. All Triple H is to me is in the same category as Roberts or Dibiase. Should have contended but never ended up a world champion.

You naysayers can say that im taking the low road, presenting an unclassy argument, or that Triple H had the goods with or without Stephanie. But i argue he didnt, he only really had the goods once he solidified his relationship with Stephanie. Having Stephanie in his corner on TV was what endeared most of us to him. I actually liked him from 99-01 (although i still thought he shouldnt be champ..but Mankind had been and he was even less worthy than Hunter). When Stephanie left his corner, he never cut it for me. Tito Santana could have done just as well had he got with Stephanie instead.

to the poster above me.... are you serious nailing the bosses daughter doesn't magically give you ring skills and mic skills. HHH started his rise way before stephania.DX ring a bell he started to shine when shawn wasn't in dx no more and he became the leader .I can think of alot of matches he was in that were classics before stephanie came into the picture. The ladder match vs the rock at summerslam or 2 out of 3 falls match with the rock. Its true the whole stephanie angle made him a way better heel but he always had the mic and ring skills to be a world champion.

Mable is my #1 pick. Even as a kid I just didn't get it. Sure he was a big guy... and?!?! It was ridiculous to push this guy as far as they tried. Terrible worker and aside from almost killing the Taker legit, he was useless.

Big useless guys was the WWF favourite - Mabel, Yokozuna, the Giant González, Dr Isaac Yankem DDS... none of these guys could get over because they either didn't have the ability or the character or both.

I'm not a Triple H apologist by any means.... However, pure and simple, he;

1) Got over with the fans

2) Had some AMAZING match of the year quality matches (not 90's but the 2000 Royal Rumble is among my favorite matches of all-time)

3) Was featured in some of the most electric feuds of the era and more than held his own in them (Vs Rock, Vs Austin, Vs Taker, Vs Angle, etc.).

I do believe that people's opinions on Triple H are very skewed. The Triple H that returned after the torn quad in 2002 was very much inferior to that of his glory years of 1998 through to the quad injury. Combine that with his notorious use of backstage politics and you've got the recipe for hate.

Triple H for the sheer fact that he was (and is) MASSIVELY over with the fans doesn't qualify for this question anyway.

As for my nomination (one of perhaps many to come)

Billy Gunn - Won the 1999 King of the Ring. One of the guys that WWE tried on numerous occasions to throw down the throats of fans. Was only ever popular when placed in groups or tag-teams.

A few notes:

1) I love that Isaac Yankem is on the list ... but only cause Glen Jacobs has become a WWE Hall of Famer since dropping that gimmick.

2) I could be mistaken, but I was under the impression that Stephanie McMahon and Triple H began their relationship in the middle of their "marriage" storyline. I remember hearing a quote that said something to the effect of, "At first it was scripted, but as the storyline progressed, we both realized it was something a bit more real..." If I do in fact remember correctly, then Triple H had already won his first world title before he hooked up with Stephanie.

.....

Now on to the topic -

If we're talking about just WWE, then my pick is VADER.

The guy was very over in WCW, but I don't recall him truly catching on with the WWE fans despite a load of action figures and guest spots on Boy Meets World.

...If we're talking about just the 90's...

Then my pick is The Big Show

His first title run in 1999 was one of the worst title reigns of the decade. It was a shame, but no one seemed to care. In fairness, I think he had the deck stacked against him since his first title win came the same night that Steve Austin was ruled out of action for a year ... It was a bummer night for WWE fans and a lackluster year followed...

---Other options include Mark Henry ... Thank God for the Sexual Chocolate character having some minor success in the late part of the decade or else this guy would have topped the list.

---Max Moon... Seriously. This guy got built up. Got no reaction. And disappeared... only to re-emerge in WCW as Konan.

Billy Gunn cannot be the most overpushed guy of the 90's - of the early noughties possibly. He was pushed as a solo artist for less than a year of the decade.

While Tripper did go onto greater things - but the Connecticut Blueblood Hunter Hurst Helmsley was NOT over and was pushed for over two years, this would make him eligible.

Diesel. I never liked Kevin Nash, but Diesel was even worse. His title run was awful...he had that random turn on Shawn Michaels for giving him the night off, then just stood there and looked tall. Mabel is another good call.

Still seems to me that people aren't getting the thread. Diesel, HHH, Goldberg, DDP, Warrior, Foley were all over with the crowd, their wrestling abilities are not on trial here.

Here is my list(in no order)

Mable
If you watch the KOTR PPV he actually is over, but I really think where he fell off was when they had him in the Main Event of Summerslam against Diesel. The fans wanted Diesel to face a monster, but I believe they wanted someone like Taker and not a large fat guy who used to rap. I almost don't blame Mable for this, more so the landscape of the company at the time.

Dude Love
Now I for one like the Dude Love character, but the fans were not so happy with it at the time. Steve Austin had just won the title months before at Wrestlemania 14. Dude Love was Cactus Jack at the time and was tagging with Chainsaw Charlie(aka Terry Funk). Foley retired the Cactus Jack character on an episode of Raw and turned Heel becoming a corperate tool for Vince. This is where fans started caring more for Vince vs SCSA than Dude vs SCSA. Perfect examples are looking at the famous Raw match with Vince vs SCSA, where Austin had one hand behind his back. Dude's interference did draw a reaction but fans seemed to care more about Austin vs McMahon. I will even go as far as to say McMahon should have used Goldust in this place, who had a world title match against Austin on Raw and cut a fantastic promo that got a lot of heel heat. Personally though, I loved the Dude vs Austin feud, I just think the fans wanted a more high profile feud for Austin's first feud as champ.

Farooq
When the Rock took over The Nation of Domination in 1997/1998 he feuded with 3 superstars before the famous DX feud. Ken Shamrock, Steve Blackman, and the Ex-leader of The Nation Farooq. Shamrock had been over since the Title match with Bret Hart early in 97 and Blackman was a newcomer who was getting over(both should have feuded with Austin eventually, but it never happened) When The Rock faced Farooq at Over The Edge in 1998 Farooq got no response what so ever. The fans at the time really loved to hate the Rock but this didnt help Farooq get over. Farooq would then go on to flounder in a tag team with Scorpio(who was very over) until he found his calling with the APA. On a side note, its funny that he is more known for the catchphrase DAMN! than being NWA champ.

My pick, anyone remember Alex Wright? Yeah, not loved too much, so WCW repackages him later as Berlyn. He was so hated that his Bodyguard "The Wall" ended up becoming popular and beat the Hell out of him. Speaking of over pushed, I have to say his Tag Team partner Disco Inferno was another one that just couldn't get that much traction. They tried everything including making him a member of the nWo Wolfpack and still, zilch. Disco had his few fans, but most everyone else seemed to hater the gimmick. Mickey Whipwreck is another one that totally fizzled out at WCW. The guy was a star in ECW, but when WCW got him, it just didn't work at all and other than the ECW fans, nobody else got it or liked it.

Alex Wright is a good shout. They battled to get him over with the Das Wondercunt thing or whatever, but that didn't work. Then they had a go at getting him over as Berlyn, but he was so unpopular that his bodyguard accidentally got over instead. He ended up failing to get over alongside Disco Inferno, who himself couldn't get over for love nor money.

Tank Abbott anyone? Brought to WCW to feud with Goldberg and make him look legit. As if planning to push him to the level of wrestling their biggest face immediately wasn't bad enough, his finish was a single punch. He could ludicrously beat anybody with a punch. They made his into fucking Superman nearly. He would have won the title in that company if it wasn't for Russo getting the boot. Idiotic. Some of Tank's run was after the 90's, but I'm sure he was there in '99.

Yup, but I strangely liked Tank Abbott. The match he had with that other MMA guy was pretty good. It all could have been quite a bit worse. It's too bad we can't do this on stuff lately because the Basham Brothers just came to mind too! Pushed to the moon and everyone hated them.

Oh, and speaking of WCW pushing people big time and people hating it? I have the ultimate. David Arquette. Yup, I know it was cross promotion for a movie, but several WCW fans just stopped watching for the rest of the time it was on Television because of him having the belt!

I'm sat here trying to think of more people, and WCW really is the gift that keeps on giving I thing.

Firstly I was thinking Jeff Jarrett. Pushed constantly wherever he was. He couldn't get over until he created his own company and filled the arena himself. He needed Debra to get anywhere near over in WWF, and in WCW he looked a complete fucking tool most of the time.

Also, Mongo. Yes, the joke that is Steve "Mongo" McMichael. Mong being the operative word. If they'd pushed him any harder, he would've....no he would have just botched something. Was he ever over? I don't think so. As far as I can remember, he was just a laughing-stock.

As a WWF shout, Marc Mero. Wasn't he supposed to be earning as much as anyone during that time? That's crazy. They pushed him, and he fell over. Flat on his arse.
