Honest question.

Why do so many of you dislike anime? Is it the weird rabid fans (They creep me out too, btw), the art style, or what? Is it the stereotypes of all anime being pornographic or shallow or kiddy?

I'd like to hear some opinions.

For me its mainly the weird fans and the fact that I find nearly every anime incredibly cheesy. Sailor Moon was always the only exception. It's just viewed by society with a negative reaction that only nerds, kids, or weirdos like it.... Society viewing it like that might make it tougher for most people to get into it due to not wanting to be viewed that way by others "oh, I'm watching an anime, guess that makes me nerdy or childish".... I gave several animes a legit chance by ignoring the stereotypes but just find them far too cheesy for me.

Very cheesy. I'm sure there's some that I would like, and I'm usually down for trying new things. What I have seen though, hasn't left a good impression on me.

Totally understand, Armbar. What kind of stuff do you like to watch? Maybe I can recommend some good ones.

I'm actually pretty open as far as movies/shows go. I've always been a huge scifi nerd. Generic action movies and shows I'm not so into, like explosions for the fuck of it. I have a friend who's always trying to get me into anime because I got him into Lost so he wants to return the favor. I'm just not so sure about it. He said Death Note is good. The closest thing I watch to anime is The Boondock's.

I've watched 2-3 series. It's not bad, but I get annoyed witht he super fans insisting that anime is light years ahead of all American animation. No, it isn't.

Definitely watch Death Note. I think I've made myself clear. ;)

Trigun is a sci-fi Western that gets deeper and more serious as the series goes on. Has some great characters, action scenes, a story, and it's just great to watch. Check them out.

Gundam Wing is a sci-fi series with a lot of interesting views on politics. Worth a watch.

My counter to that is the fact that Japanese Animation is designed specifically for Young Adults/an older generation. Most American cartoon's are designed for younger children and as such aren't going to have the "depth" Anime's normally have.

I agree. Superfans of ANYTHING annoy the heck out of me. I love anime, I love American animation. I love good TV shows.

True and there are definitely animes that are better than American shows, but the vice versa can also be true. The hardcore fans with blind loyalty to Japan and anything produced there is what annoys me.

And I'd think the Flintstones and original Loony Toons could be called rather adult oriented at times.

I'd kinda link them to what Disney does now. They make shows geared towards Kids, but drop different things to keep the Adults entertained and make it so that they can actually enjoy themselves with their child.

Though, personally, I'd take Code Geass or something akin to Gundam 00 over almost anything that America puts out today of the Cartoon Variety.

Give Kiddy Grade a shot; it has tons of sci fi elements

In the 'Twist' thread someone mentioned 'Grave Of The Fireflies'.

While I dont watch (or like) much anime at all, that was a beautiful little movie that I (and obviously someone else here) fully recommend
