Why Extreme Rules should be changed to Aftermath

There are a couple of reasons the name of the PPV following WM should be changed. This is, or should be, the follow-up to WM, and played correctly, this should be able to continue the momentum of the new developments and storylines. Also, WM is known as the Superbowl, the granddaddy of them all, so why attempt to outshine it with something more Extreme. By renaming it Aftermath they're able to draw off the previous WM plus advance new storylines. If the WWE is stuck on the name Extreme Rules, then have it replace one of several other PPV's that could use a revamping. Just a thought.

Anything is better than Extreme Rules. ANYTHING. The Aftermath name is alright, however, what would make this brand stand out from the rest more than Extreme Rules? I need more than just Wrestlemania rematches. It's currently a useless show. I detest the fact that they have kept that name and removed any hint of what the brand once was. TLC is currently what Extreme Rules should be, a show with gimmick matches where weapons are allowed to be used such as ladders or chairs. As for what to do with the Extreme Rules brand? Put it out of its misery. I personally think Payback should become the annual Wrestlemania aftermath/rematch show. The name fits, it was a decent show last year when it debuted, and they could simply move it to the May spot after removing Extreme Rules. This gives us one PPV per month this year other than March which is used to build up Wrestlemania. My biggest problem is that there's still nothing setting it apart from the rest. Over The Limit was fine, I wouldn't be opposed to bringing that back and having I Quit or Last Man Standing matches be at the event. Maybe add that to Payback, Aftermath, Extreme Rules, or whatever the show following Wrestlemania is going to be. Do SOMETHING to make us care beyond that idiotic "The One Night Where WWE Goes EXTREME" statement they make every year. If it has to be another show it replaces instead, Battleground. I can't fathom why that is still on the calendar.

This particular PPV- or the PPV right around that time-frame- used to be called Backlash.

So if anything, they willingly WENT AWAY from that particular type of name, rather than they need to go to it.

Dammit, Zycho beat me to it.

What in the Hell ever happened to Backlash? Aftermath isn't a bad idea, don't get me wrong. But Backlash just seems more applicable.

I don't know what reason the WWE had for changing the name of the PPV to something boring and basic like "Extreme Rules". Last year there was only one match on the card with "Extreme Rules" rules applied and it wasn't even the main event.

If it was changed to "WWE Aftermath" it would be an improvement.

I may be in the minority in liking Extreme Rules. After the 'big four' (or three, since it's becoming increasingly difficult to include Survivor Series in that) it's one of the first pay-per-views that I look forward to. I think it sticks out from the other gimmicky pay-per-views - which, for the most part, I hate because it takes away any of the creativity that was required to actually build a story leading into a Hell In A Cell/TLC/Elimination Chamber match - because there isn't a set stipulation. There's the Extreme Rules match type itself (which, as has been mentioned, is sparsely used), but apart from that the freedom to use different stipulations and actually build a story to make the stipulation meaningful is something that I enjoy. You could argue that it shouldn't require a particular card each year for this to occur - I'd agree - but there is something entertaining about being able to look forward to four or five stipulations on one night.

I also think that, for the past few years, it's been one of the more entertaining cards in terms of match quality and I've no doubt that the stipulations have aided this.

Totally share your opinion/pleasure of experiencing the Extreme Rules event each year. Now not every Extreme Rules has been loaded with all 8 speciality matches that deliver excellently, but oftentimes, it has made Wrestlemania rematches seem more entertaining than the original matches. The past two years, the trend has been to add 2-3 singles matches or filler garbage such as Jericho vs Fandango, or Ryback beating two jobbers. I suppose that has been done to elevate the rest of the 5 matches on the card and make them seem/feel "more special". Either ways, Extreme Rules is that single event which has given us dozens of good to great speciality matches, from steel cage to Last man standing(to which I'm particularly devoted) and Ladder matches. The matches from all Extreme Rules events(2009-2013) have been so pleasurable, both on paper and actually , that I wish this event becomes one of the WWE's major events apart from WM and Summerslam.

I also agree with the OP about the post-WM event being named Aftermath, if not that, then revert back to Backlash but Extreme Rules should stay in the pay-per-view calendar. I don't care about the name of the event, but the event itself.
