My first post... and it happens to be in this thread. Let's give this a shot; three things I think would make WWE better?
Championship(s)
Unify the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and the... WWE World Heavyweight Championship? WWE (World Heavyweight) Championship? When this is done, call it the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Yeah... one ultimate goal, not two supposedly equal ultimate goals. It's ridiculous how one is meant to represent a 'brand' of the same promotion. Even when the extension was feigned authentic, it was ridiculous. Title reigns no longer hold much kayfabe significance when one could lose a "world" championship, simply switch 'brands' and win a different "world" championship. Besides, how do you have two "world" champions at the same time, in the same division?
Also, unify the United States Heavyweight Championship and Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship, again. When I become involved in a fictional universe I enjoy continuity and some resemblance of logic/rationale. The Intercontinental Championship was meant to be a unification of the old WWF North American Heavyweight Championship and some fictionally recognized South American Heavyweight Championship. The U.S. Heavyweight Championship was meant to be a secondary 'other brand' title obtained through WCW, though the name alone implies it of lesser value than the Intercontinental Title. It appears to be now taking more the role of the previous European Heavyweight Championship, which I really don't mind, though I find its existence unnecessary and would scrap in favour of two singles championships. The fewer titles, the more prestigious they are. Also, a wrestler may need be in the promotion for a long time before they "earn" their chance. It would grant time to properly build workers skills and reputation.
The Intercontinental Championship should be elevated to its former glory. Its holder should be considered the #2 worker in the company, or at least in the top five, being a definite contender to the World Heavyweight Championship. Two separate tours on the house show circuit should take place, with one being led by the Intercontinental Champion and one by the World Heavyweight Champion. I believe they did that in the 80's.
Some think a Hardcore or other gimmick championship should be redeemed; I don't. Save those sorts of matches for heated rivalries and the rare novelty act. Some also think a Cruiserweight/Light-Heavyweight/Junior Heavyweight Division should be revived... I am on the fence, though lean towards saying nay. The average size of the roster has decreased over the years... I believe over half, if not more than half is under 225lbs. How small would a wrestler have to be?
Also, increase the size of the Tag Team Division without just throwing together already recognized and established singles workers. Or, if need be, go that route but prepare them to be teamed for the long-haul. No makeshift teams should be created just to split for the easy program option after the split, nor just to win the titles once or twice in a year. Bring in or up some women that can actually "wrassle". The focus should not be on models and other beautiful women that are hired, then trained.
Championship reigns need be significant! Very little if any casual bouncing, and they will very rarely be defended on free television. If you want to see a title defense, buy the Pay Per View.
In closing...
- WWE (World Heavyweight) Championship
- Intercontinental (Heavyweight) Championship
- WWE (World) Tag Team Championship
- WWE Women's Championship; scrap the "Diva's" crap.
Programming
Monday Night RAW goes back to being two hours long. All four shows will remain, though they will have a different, perhaps abit dated, format.
RAW and Smackdown will be the two main programs, used to promote feuds, though less emphasis will be upon PPV quality segments/matches and more on promoting the PPVs and House Shows. There should be at least six matches per card, (I would like to see seven or eight) with only two to three showcasing upper-tier talent against one another, or midcarders whether in the amidst of a long-term program, or short. The others fall back onto squashing "ham-n-eggers", be it actual indy talent or FCW/NXT rookies getting exposure. Those matches need not necessarily be squashes, though they would be primarily fodder for WWE midcarders to keep them looking strong and relevant. I absolutely hate how wrestlers nowadays lose consistently only to suddenly become a threat. Midcarders are not jobbers. When I read sites that count television wins/losses, and an upper-midcarder, or champion loses over 75% of the time, it vexes me.
Main Event will be like the old Prime-Time Wrestling program, airing footage from the House Show circuit and putting over wrestlers. One featured match and some squashes. Maybe throw in some sweepstakes/contests... WWE coming to your town? Want to be on television? Win some free merch? Maybe be a guest timekeeper?
Saturday Morning Slam is a children's show. WWF Mania with a focus on the younger demographic. One match, one guest commentator, a few segments.
Creative Team goes away... bringing back BOOKERS and calling Agents AGENTS instead of producers. No full-time active wrestler should be forced to job, not used, or released because there "wasn't anything for him". If a worker is not currently engaged in a program, go the Ryback way and feed him more (jobbers). The Event Center, Update and PPV Reports would return to give the show a more legit sport vibe.
Five major Pay-Per-Views (Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, Money in the Bank, SummerSlam, Survivor Series) with seven minor PPVs at a lesser value in between.
Miscellaneous Gripes with Roster/Booking
- Get rid of the "General Manager" and bring back the President. Reference him/her and use him/her sparingly. The role of the authority figure is overplayed.
- No Booking on the fly. I hate opening segments of a show being used to make the main event. THE MAIN EVENT SHOULD ALREADY BE BOOKED BECAUSE THE SHOW IS 'SUPPOSEDLY' LIVE. The whole card should be booked. The audience shouldn't be as potentially unaware of the card AS THE F****** (I self-censored that) ADMINISTRATION. VERY RARELY MAKE MATCHES ON THE FLY. Promote the next card at the end of the show, or sometime during the show to build interest. Wrestler #1 vs. Wrestler #2; Wrestler in action next week!
- Not every heel has to cheat to win. I HATE HATE HATE that. Just because a person is "bad" doesn't mean they lack the ability to within the rules defeat a "good" guy. Sometimes heels are just better, or have the better outing.
- Let the wrestlers talk. Do not script every word. At least give the worker a chance to get their gimmick over. Or stick them with a manager. BRING BACK MANAGERS! YES! Those managers aren't (kayfabe) employed by the promotion. WWE can't fire a manager that a wrestler hired to manage him/her.
- "The following contest is scheduled for one-fall with a ##-Minute Time Limit."
- Introduce each wrestler with their hometown, height and weight.
- No more revising history or conveniently forgetting something.
I think I've gone over three things. My initial post is a failure.
