UFC 116 LD - Where Frank Mir Cries Regardless of Who Wins

MMA show of the year, easily. I'll post my full thoughts on each fight in the MMA Section.

Before that though.... while what Lesnar pulled off was impressive as fuck, let's still give props to Shane Carwin. He kicked Lesnar's ass in that first round. Seriously... who saw that coming? I sure as fuck didn't.

Tonight was Lesnar's night, but Carwin showed once and for all that he is 100% legit. I don't know many in the UFC HW Division that will be able to beat that dude.

117 is Silva-Sonnen right?

Yes, plus Fitch vs. Alves 2, Roy Nelson vs. JDS, Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida, and Clay Guida vs. Rafael Dos Anjos. If that's not a stacked main card, then what is?

What's 118's main event?

BJ Penn vs. Frankie Edgar 2 for the LW Title. Also Randy Couture will kill James Toney (the boxer), Kenny Florian will kill Gray Maynard, and Nate Diaz vs. Marcus Davis should be a stand-up war.

Another thing to note is that both these shows are making their debuts in new cities. UFC 117 will be in Oakland, and UFC 118 will be in Boston. The crowds should be awesome at both shows.

What a night, yeah?

My two favorite fights were with Leben and Brock. That Leben guy is a lunatic! He's instantly my #2 guy behind Lesnar now that I know he's from Portland.

Brock got the shiiiit kicked out of him in the first round. I honestly thought the ref was about to stop the fight a few times. What a shame that would have been. That comeback has to be one of the best in UFC history. It showed extreme toughness. His interview post-match was pure class. I think his illness gave him a totally new perspective. It was great to see him with all of the WWE guys. I saw Austin, Goldberg, Heyman, and JR. The Rock was backstage with him.

The question is.. who the hell is going to beat Lesnar?

I'm really hoping Dos Santos knocks the fuck out of Big Country next month and moves up in the HW division contender ranks, he really won me over in his last 3 fights and is one of my favorites, that and I cant stand Roy Nelson.

Also for 118 I hope Marcus beats the hell out of Diaz, not one of my favorite guys after that bullshit he and his brother pulled on Meyhem.

The question is.. who the hell is going to beat Lesnar?

I don't know, man.

The only person I can see who could actually beat Lesnar is Big Nog, but he'll most likely never go on the winning streak he needs to get a title shot.

But there's nobody else. Lesnar will take Cain Velasquez down and dominate him, same would happen to JDS, Roy Nelson is too fat to do anything off his back (he needs to be on top to catch someone, and there's no chance in hell he'll ever be able to take Lesnar down), and Mir... well, I think Mir stands a chance better than the rest of these names, but I think if he fought Lesnar again... it'll be similar to the 2nd fight, or Mir's fight with Carwin.

So, yeah... right now, Big Nog is the only person I could see beating Lesnar just because the guy is so damn good off his back. Fedor would kick Lesnar's ass I think, but we'll never see him in the UFC. And Werdum would catch Lesnar too most likely... but again, I doubt we see him in the UFC anytime soon as well.

Honestly after seeing this fight I think if Carwin gets another shot he might put him away. He rocked him pretty good and just didn't capitalize on it. I think he could knock Lesnar out in a rematch.

We have to remember that this was Lesnar's first fight in over a year after a major, major illness. This probably was not Brock's best.

I don't buy that. While Brock may not have been at his best, how did it effect him? Would have training for a year prepared him for getting his lights knocked out in the first round? Of course not. Carwin punches like a fucking beast, no amount of training could have prepared Brock for that first round assault.

And Lesnar just dominated him in the second round. Everyone knew going into the fight that if the fight was going to be a stand-up affair, Carwin was likely to win, but if Brock could take him down, Brock was likely to win. And that's exactly the way it played out, with Carwin winning the first and Lesnar the second.

I'm glad Lesnar won, I like watching him, and I think he's good for the UFC to be champion, and in a small way, good for the WWE that he's champion, but I don't think him being out for a year made any difference last night.

Actually, I think it did. Lesnar was noticeably smaller last night. I don't believe he started properly training until 4 months maybe. I mean, from being practically on his death bed to last night is a great turnaround. He didn't look his best though. Sure, nothing can prepare you from getting hit in the face like that but he looked off the whole fight. By the next time he fights, he'll be a beast again. He's got to regain that massive frame he had the last 4 fights.

How does being bigger make you able to take a punch in the face better? This wasn't a back and forth fight. It was Carwin tagging Lesnar and spending the whole first round pummeling him, and the second round was Lesnar taking Carwin down and dominating him on the ground.

Sorry, I didn't mean for it to come across as his size helping him take a punch. I was trying to say that with Brock noticeably smaller, he was more cautious. He got caught with those punches because he was afraid to engage. Carwin charged and Lesnar went back, and so started the barrage. If he was the same size and in the same shape he was, I think the fight would've gone a little different. Maybe Lesnar would've thrown punches with Carwin. He just looked hesitant as all hell and paid for it.

So you think Brock being champion legitimises professional wrestling or what?

If that's true, then being smaller saved Brock, because if he wanted to throw punches with Carwin, he would have been knocked the fuck out.

Brock can't stand and trade with Carwin...I'm not sure anyone can...but certainly not Lesnar.

It doesn't hurt...for decades, pro wrestlers were looked at as carny workers, guys who were fake. To have a guy go from being a Pro Wrestling Champion to being the #1 man in MMA does give pro wrestling some legitimacy.
