Terrell, I think you're being too optimistic. ECW is not going to evolve into anything special, because the talent either just flat out sucks or is being relegated to jobber status (put 75% of the ECW alumni in the latter category). If there's anything we've come to expect from Vinnie Mac, it's that he's in the "sports entertainment" business as opposed to professional wrestling, and he's glossing over what was once an edgy, gritty alternative to his company with his corporate touch, essentially turning it into the WWE minor league.
What does Vinnie love? Vinnie loves big guys (he's constantly pushing guys that are 6'5" or taller, even if they have zero wrestling ability), he loves scantily-clad tarts, and he LOVES using squash matches to put people over. He's not going to showcase the ECW style, because the "new breed unleashed" isn't skilled enough to execute it or sell it. Therefore, he doesn't give a damn about the audience for Paul Heyman's ECW - instead, he's going to sell it to the people that watch Raw and SmackDown! every week by featuring WWE stars and defectors along with goofy gimmicks like vampires.
This is a bigger risk than simply presenting ECW as it was. It's just another brand of "sports entertainment" now that has inferior storylines to Raw and wrestling that's just boring & predictable in general. If the real ECW were around today with Vinnie providing financial assistance and no other input, it would be huge and the fans would be way into it. Instead, as the program went on, the only thing I could think of was 'Hmmmm, I wonder what Vinnie is going to do to piss off the ECW faithful next...", which of course led to Heyman betraying RVD and aligning with The Big Slow.
ECW isn't going to evolve, so don't keep your hopes up. It's basically going to be OVW with a TV deal, a new name and a few ECW alumni whose sole purpose is to job to the "new breed unleashed", who are really just ordinary big guys for the most part. And if they're over with the crowd enough (which may happen to CM Punk), they will eventually be called up to the "big leagues", either Raw or SmackDown! I was disappointed at first, but now I'm just going to accept ECW for what it is and expect nothing more. It will never even come close to TNA in the wrestling department because Vinnie has banned so many moves that most matches are just boring to watch now.
