Theoretically Should CM Punk Be The Top Heel of SmackDown?

CM Punk has been on a role in his career it would seem. Since his heel turn against Jeff Hardy last year the man has been absolutely golden. I also thought that when he won his third world title from Hardy at SummerSlam that he had arrived and that we had seen the next big time heel star of the future. He soon began a feud with The Undertaker and seemed to be going steady. Then he dropped the title to Taker at Hell In A Cell, in a match that was very infamous for being as short and mundane as it was. Punk continued to contend for the title up until Bragging Rights, which ended up being his last big shot at the title he would receive in a good while.

After this it would seem CM Punk would be Chris Jericho'd as he was put in midcard feud after midcard feud. Feuding with the likes of Matt Hardy, R-Truth, and Scott Armstrong isn't exactly a great thing after having a great summer in the main event on SmackDown. During this time I believe Undertaker may have been feuding with Batista in the main event picture. A good thing that came of CM Punk's run under the main event has been his dramatic change in character we have seen over the past nine months or so. He began to grow Charles Manson like beard. And ended up introducing us to his followers in the Straight Edge Society. Those two being Luke Gallows and Serena. So while he was in the upper midcard he was able to develop a character that so genius and perfect that the crowd hated him more than some of the bigger main event heels.

2010 came rolling around, and Punk had a fun albeit short run in the Royal Rumble. Then he went on to get his first shot at the world title in what seemed like forever when he competed in SmackDown's Elimination Chamber match. After a failed attempt a regaining the title Punk then jump started a feud with Rey Mysterio that took up the better part of the next few months of the year. It also resulted in Punk's hair getting shaven off, which is something I still don't think they should have done. He competed in SmackDown's Fatal 4 Way match with yet another unsuccessful attempt at regaining the belt. And afterward he injured his arm and seems to be going into a feud with The Big Show which could ultimately end up in the two having a match at SummerSlam.

However my main point I am trying to make is even though he has been stuck in some very mediocre and mundane midcard feuds and having a schedule on the roster much like Chris Jericho, I think Punk is deserving of more because his character is more over than some main event calibre star's characters. He is among WWE's most over performers yet for some reason Jack Swagger is getting the top heel spot on SmackDown. Now I like Swagger too and think this is great for him and his career, but Punk is the clearly more over star and in my mind WWE needs to capitalize on Punk's over-ness while they can because the guy is so very great at what he does. he has a great character that he pulls off to perfection and he is a solid in-ring performer. Please WWE we need a fourth World Heavyweight title run for The Pastor of Purity!

I couldnt aggree with you more. With the current roster that SD has CM Punk should be the top heel and he should be the one fueding with Kane right now not Rey. Can you think of the promos that would come from those two with Kanes recent awesomeness on the mic and Punk always being amazong one the mic. I'm sure it would be a better match than Kane/Rey aswell. I think that the only reason that this isnt happening is because of Punks injury. Now that he is healed expect to see him elevated back to being SD's top heel.

I would argue not even theoretical but obviously he should be the top heel. I just wish the Straight Edge Society would've consisted of stars with more potential than Gallows and Mercury. Punk could've been shot to the moon if more over superstars joined his cult-like group and worshipped him. He is so brilliant that I don't think WWE can resist another world championship run though.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the SES could be amazing if they stopped jobbing out their mid card members, when was the last time Gallows won a match? If they started treating them seriously and made them dominate Smackdown it could be similar to the heel 99/00ish DX in the McMahon/Helmsley Era. Back then they looked down at everyone and unlike SES they were always able to back it up in the ring with some good beat downs, matches, championships, and promos. They jobbed to nobody except for the very best, hell they even took down the Big Show as a unit when he was truly treated as the biggest, strongest, deadliest threat in the ring. With the ongoing feud with Show the SES could finally be treated as the main event faction that they deserve to be. If this feud goes the way I think it should Gallows/Mercury should be able to fight for the IC title in the not too distant future and Serena most definitely could fight for the Divas title after she makes her in ring debut. This main event faction would easily make Punk the top heel that he has deserved to be since the MITB cash in last year, Swagger is impressive in the ring for a young heel but Punk has the experience that Swagger lacks and is able to get MASSIVE heat by doing next to nothing.

There's really two ways you could look into this.

First off you have Jack Swagger, a youngster getting over, and getting over well. He's been a world champion already, twice (If we count the ECW championship). And while he may not be as over as CM Punk, he is over as a heel. He has proved that he can put on good matches, as well as that, while the reign was shit. He could run with the championship, we saw some decent promos as well as good matches every night he goes in the ring. WWE has seemingly tried to form him as their new Kurt Angle. And because of that, of course he should be the top heel, he is the future on Smackdown and he could be a major player in the coming years if booked right.

With that in mind, then it would be obvious that WWE wants him to be the top heel, because there's a future in Jack, now don't get me wrong, CM Punk has a future in him as well, he's already over and accomplished, so it would make sense for him to the top heel as well.

However, there's obviously still gonna be something dragging in old Vince that urges him to push the big guys, the ones that actually looks like a legitimate world champion. And there's no denying that, CM Punk doesn't look legit, next to Jack Swagger and Big Show, for that sake he wouldn't even look legit against anybody but Edge and Jericho on RAW. So that's another point to Jack Swagger.

But let's get to how it could go the CM Punk way. As I mentioned he's already over, we all see that. As well as he has the accomplishments in the business to be a solid accomplished main event wrestler. However he's older, and while it's only 3 years older than Jack. It's a 3 year period where they could benefit more from establishing the future that has yet to be properly established. Jack has yet to be properly established, CM Punk already is.

But that doesn't deny the fact that CM Punk right now makes the most sense to be on the top, because Jack can still be established and build without being the big guy. We've seen guys that have become established and a legitimate threat, without being a world champion. It's all about letting him rip apart some upper mid-carders and a few of the main event players. While they let CM Punk run wild with the world title, only to have some face knock CM Punk off the top, and Jack Swagger knocking off that champion.

That way we could make it work for both of them, and CM Punk would serve as the top heel.

Punk without a doubt is the best heel on SmackDown, and is the best singular heel in the company. The guy has it all, and can work with just about anyone who isn't the Big Show, due to his size. Now, I can see why Punk isn't the top heel right now, as he was injured and in a sling for the past month-month and a half I think. Obviously he couldn't challenge for the title when he is in a sling, can't win one-armed.

Enter in Jack Swagger, who actually has been on fire lately, but who isn't when you try and tear off Rey Mysterio's ankle? He went from nothing to champion in probably a two week span. Now he is a big heel getting nice heat from the crowds. He is still a relatively young guy who they want to stay over, so I can't blame them keeping him in his current position.

Now, when Punk gets back to performing in the ring, this thing with Big Show will likely continue, and then he will hopefully move up and challenge for the title again. He is the top heel, he just isn't performing while injured. Swagger was fitting in there, and if he continues doing a good job, then so be it.

Oh and Ferbs, I noticed you did say that Punk doesn't look legit next to people. He looked legit in the ring with John Cena the first time they went at it. Took a Super Attitude Adjustment to put him down. He and Orton could put on some good matches. Punk can go with just about anybody, so long as he doesn't go for a GTS on Kane anymore.

I was referring more to a size perspective. Because let's be realistic here my friend. CM Punk both in build and height holds zero to a guy like Jack Swagger or Triple H for that sake. That is why I said that he looks more legitimate against a guy of his size and build (Edge and Jericho).

I know perfectly well he's legitimate in the ring. But it doesn't mean that he's a shoe-in to be the biggest heel on Smackdown. Like I said Jack has a future to be build on. CM Punk is already established enough to a place where we know "This guy can make it work in the main event". But Jack Swagger is not, and that's probably the primary reason they're building him. To have more people to fall back on.

CM Punk is the best heel on Smackdown possibly the WWE, and deserves to be the top heel on Smackdown now that he is healthy. Punk is the best on the mic and very good on the ring. He has worked his way up from the bottom and he deserves the push he is getting.

He may be a little undersized compared to the other main eventers but his style and in-ring work makes up for it. He is the best on the mic in the company behind Chris Jericho and has an awesome gimmick.

As a follower of the Straightedge lifestyle, I will agree that CM Punk is the best heel on Smackdown right now. I would love to see the SES in a more quality role other than being run-ins for Punk. I would like to see them in their own fueds for the tag team titles and such.

With that being said however, I have no problem with Punk taking a backseat to Swagger right now b/c it's help building a future star for the WWE which is needed. Swagger will continue to shine as he is now in his current vicious role and when the time comes Punk will take over the top heel spot and then you will have two credible stars as your best heels on the show.

I hope CM Punk gets back into the main event scene as the top heel soon. I can't stand Swagger and I'm sick of seeing him in all of Smackdown's main events. I swear if I see another Rey Mysterio/Jack Swagger match, I am just gonna scream.

I would say yes, he should be. His work as a heel is as good as it gets. Swagger has been great too, but Punk is just better.

As for his spot in the main event, its just a case of rotation. Swagger has his feud going right now, so he is in the right position for the top spot. Until his time comes around once again, he will stay with his feud with Big Show.

Just because he isnt in the running for the strap right now doesnt mean he's not in a top position though. Just a month or two ago, both Punk and Big Show were in a top spot, going after the belt at Fatal Four Way. The feud between the two of them isnt for the championship, but its still a top feud. Almost a co-main event.

Anyway, I'm sure after his arm heals up and the Swagger/Rey/Kane feud dies down a bit, Punk will get his turn. They just need to keep Swagger rolling right now. But when they are happy with where Swagger is, Punk will take over that top spot on Smackdown.

In my complete,
un-biased oppinion,
Yes,
I do agree,
As a follower of SES,
That cast has put a real damper on my mood,
But that cast didn't effect his on-screen character,
That promo he cut this past Smackdown was GOLDEN,
& That promo Kane cut this past Smackdown was GOLDEN,
Gold + Gold = SHINE
& Rey Mysterio was just kind of there in his own little world,
no pun intended.
The sling came off Friday,
So i'm hoping that after SS he'll be back in the main event.

P.S
It's high time SES starts throwing their wait around,
Don't just bully who your in the feud with,
Serena's supposed to be the anti-diva,
So show her picking on them,
Or have her trash them every once in awhile
Get Gallows and Joseph out there,
(I refuse to further acknowledge him as Joey, Punk said Joseph, and what Punk says goes)
They're both good in the ring,
So let's see it.
