Themed PPVs

The 1-2-3 Killam

Mid-Card Championship Winner
There's a lot of heat on all the themed PPVs throughout the year, but there are some that I actually enjoy.
1.) What is your favorite of the themed PPVs?
2.) Is there a theme you wish they would use instead?
3.) If you could remove a single themed PPV, what would it be?

---

My favorite is probably TLC. Not that it's had all the greatest matches, but because it has the potential to be a great PPV. TLC matches are always fun, but I could do without the chairs match...lame. I think they either need to get rid of Night of Champions, or do something besides defend every title at every PPV. Every single PPV event is Night of Champions, so what's the point? Also, I really enjoyed the Cyber Sunday PPV, and if they brought that back in place of one of the weaker events that would be great.

My favorite is TLC. I really enjoy this concept because the TLC match itself is my favorite gimmick match. Plus we get to see tables matches, ladder matches, and chairs matches, although I don't see the point in a chairs match. But yeah, TLC is my favorite. If I had to get rid of one, it would be Hell in a Cell. It used to be my favorite gimmick match because of it's rarity and the excitment with the pre-match build up. That was one of the best parts about that match. Now there is not much build up at all and the Hell in a Cell match is being over done. It should only occur once or twice a year. Not two or three a pay per view. I would replace it with Breaking Point. I thought Breaking Point was a good name for a pay per view and was a really good pay per view. You don't have to over-due the submissions though, just a submission match and an I quit match and I would be happy.

My favorite is Money in the Bank (or at the very least, the concept of it.) While I will say that the fewer gimmick matches there are, the more impressive they seem, I still love ladder matches. I feel like they never disappoint. I know some people will argue that, but I also don't watch every PPV.

I'm skipping #2 for now. I would eliminate Night of Champions. Simply put, EVERY PPV should be Night of Champions. I know it wasn't asked, but I would tweak Bragging Rights to make it meaningful, such as the winning team can appear on the losing teams show but not the other way around. Ok, so maybe not the best idea, but it's better than just winning a trophy.

What gimmick would I like to see used? 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 5 falls. I will give credit for this idea to TNA. The best of 5 tag team matches between Motor City Machine Guns and Beer Money Inc. last year were fantastic. They don't even have to be different stipulations for each fall, but it also gives depth to the match. In a 3 out of 5, if one person is up 2 to nothing, it gives the other guy motivation to come back and for the crowd to really get behind them and completely mark out when they do end up with the win.

My favorite is TLC. it's for the same reason all the others said.

as far as one i would want to see, i would have to say a punjabi prison pay per view . but then again maybe not.

there have only been 2 punjabi prison matches in history and i feel there were really exciting matches and would like to see more.

but, i would want a MAX of 2 prisons at the pay per view. i say this because the match is exciting and if they overdue it it will be like hell in a cell.

I do not like themed pay per views, they demean the actual concept, but to pick, Elimination Chamber, due to the massive deal towards Wrestlemania and how it affects matches leading up to it

1) My favorite would probally be TLC, I dont really have a reason other than I dont like themed ppvs period, but that ones the best in my opionion.
2) I would like the see the Championship Scramble come back for its own ppv,I thought thats what Unforgiven was gonna change to be but that turned into Breaking Point (What happened to that by the way?)
3) Without a doubt the 1st one I would get rid of would be Hell in a Cell. I love the match, just not the PPV. It cheapens the match, some fueds dont need to be in Hell in a Cell. Like the CM Punk/Undertaker match a couple years ago. They werent even fighting that long and they feel the need to stick them in a Cell match? It was better when it would be a fued that had gone on all year and end it and put them in the match at like Survivor Series or something like that

My favourite is probably Bragging Rights (Does that count? It doesn't have a match theme, but it's still themed) with TLC coming in a close second. Having a brand warfare themed show is cool and I always like it when the heels and faces unite to battle a common enemy.

I'd like to see the King Of The Ring back in PPV form. Looking back this PPV usually had a stacked card with good matches from start to finish.

I think we could do without Elimination Chamber. Just call it No Way out. There are no differences between No Way Out and Elimination Chamber. 2 chamber matches and shit other matches. Also as much as I like the potential, I'd prefer to have just on MITB match at Wrestlemania instead of a whole PPV. It's prestige level went down after last year's PPV.

1. I don't really have a fave PPV per se. I mean, it is something interesting to watch for me, honestly. I really can't choose one, sorry, I'm going to be as neutral as Switzerland on this.

2. Championship Scramble was a little confusing for me. I know something has to be better than a new champion every 5 minutes. That can probably be done away with.

3. I didn't mind Breaking Point. However, maybe make it a Submissions Only type pay per view show. Because of the fact you have quite a few submissions persons in the shows now. You've got Punk with his Koji clutch, or Anaconda Vise, or DB with Lebell lock, Natalya with Sharpshooter, Ziggler with Sleeperhold, Dibiase Jr with Dreamstreet, Cena with STF, Jericho with Walls of Jericho, the possibilities would be endless on this. Then...the icing on the cake...my choice for theme song for the PPV....Breaking Benjamin's song..."I Will Not Bow." :scratchchin: How's that for a themed suggestion?

1) I think i'm with the majority of people here when I say that TLC is my favourite themed PPV. I liked how they have each match as either a table match, a ladder match or a chair match all building up to the big daddy at the end of the night which happens to be my favourite gimmick match.

2) I'd love to see the return of Cyber Sunday...that was a great gimmick having the fans decide the matches and I thought that was one of the real successes of the 'WWE' era. Plus King Of The Ring is such a classic that I think it should come back...that was my favourite three hour Raw of last year and the pay per view always threw up some great moments and storylines.

3) I'd happily see the back of Money in the Bank...i don't think its such a bad idea for a pay per view but it is always a great addition to the card at Wrestlemania (besides last year's one!) and having three superstars running around with briefcases is just overkill!

On a side note and speaking of overkill, does anybody else think that Bragging Rights should be moved...last year we had three elimination tag matches on pay per view (Nexus vs WWE, SD vs RAW and Survivor Series) within four months of each other! Just a themed PPV rant!

Not a fan of the themed PPV's. It completely devalues a PPV' main event if the stipulation i used elsewhere (take MITB for example).

I miss the days of Judgement Day, Backlash and No Mercy. Personally I think they should get rid of all these themed PPV's and just throw these matches into PPV events to garner interest.

My Calendar would be:

Royal Rumble
No Way Out
Wrestlemania
Backlash
King Of The Ring
Bash @ The Beach
Summerslam
No Mercy
Fully Loaded
Survivor Series
Armegeddon

without a doubt i hate themed ppvs.because there is no point of having them in the first place.what was wrong with the old ppvs like backlash,no mercy,or vengeance.i would like to see wwe bring back about 5 old ppvs and get some themed ppvs like fatal 4 way or bragging rights and mostly definitely hell in a cell

The WWE brought themed pay per views in to have something different. They need something new and they are just toying with these and come up with new ones over the past few years. I definately would love to see Fatal 4 Way and Hell in a Cell gone but at least back up your argument and explain why they are bad. You just said you hated them because there is no point in having them but in reality, Vince had a really good point in having themed Pay Per Views.

The WWE landscape has changed 100fold since I became a fan in 1994 and gimmick matches are the norm nowadays which kind of brings us to the point that gimmick/themed PPV's are here to stay for the future.

Personally I perfer gimmick/themed matches to be used to enhance a storyline or blow the storyline off, with the gimmick/theme PPV's we're getting an extra match that pretty much ends up being forgettable due to the fact their is multiple matches on card that are the same.

If the gimmick PPV's are here to stay I'd perfer too see WWE use some common sense and alternate these gimmick PPV's rather then have them annually so we get some kind of veriaty and maybe introduce the Old School Raw/Nitro, Slammys as a PPV, maybe even the draft and change the concept from the normal RAW Draft concept of winner gets draft pick. Or maybe bring back In Your House as a PPV (use the old set) and use some of the gimmick matches that were used at IYH's.

WWE is just playing hot potatoes at the moment seeing what works and doesn't but if WWE insist on having less then decent gimmick PPV's then for the sake of old school/even new school fans bring back the KOTR & Survivor Series (concept) matches I know I for one get very amp'd for both shows regardless if it's on RAW or not.

I remember a few months ago there was talk of a Legend themed PPV. What a non starter that is. As long as Hogan and Flair are in TNA it will never work.

Who is going to draw? Austin and HBK are free agents but both are retired. Bret Hart isnt what he was. Warrior wouldnt work for WWE. I could see the main event Sgt Slaughter vs Roddy Piper...

I know people always say what their ideal lineup would be. But I always wanted to create my own. Anyways here is my schedule with certain pay per views added and taken away:

Last weekend of December or First weekend in Jan: TLC
End of Jan- Mid Feb: Royal Rumble (I think its best to have Royal Rumble then Wrestlemania)
Wrestlemania- its usual slot
End of April-May: Backlash (like the name says, backlash from WM)
June- Heavy Metal (Good name for a pay per view, Steel cage and elimination chamber, I know the set up is difficult, but it'd be very entertaining)
July- Summerslam (have this in the middle of summer instead of the end)
August- Judgement Day
September- Bragging Rights (good concept without being a "themed match" pay per view)
October- Cyber Sunday (always entertaining)
November- King of the Ring (could add prestige, always wanted to see it as a pay per view again, also could be the big pay per view for the fall/ winter)
December- Armageddon- perfect to end the year with

The idea of themed PPVS is stupid. WWE should of left the PPVS alone. How can you have a Hell In A Cell PPV with no blood? Give me a break Vince when are you going to open your eyes about this PG garbage?

I'm a fan of the themed PPV concept for the most part. Money in the Bank illustrates a situation where the themed PPV gives undercard guys a chance to really shine in a major match rather than jerking a curtain for a 10 minute tag-team bout that nobody really cares about. You can have the entire PPV consist of the two title matches, a womens title match, and the two MITB matches, giving you ample time to showcase talent. If you had each title match have 25 minutes and then the Womens title match have about 10, you'd still have an hour for each MITB match. That's plenty of time for each superstar to make some sort of impact, and makes you feel like whoever wins the match really really deserved it.

Other themed ppvs suck though. HiaC shouldn't be a themed PPV. It should be to blow off a feud.

The themed PPVs I'd use are: Elimination Chamber, MitB, Breaking Point, and TLC. I think Breaking Point was a conceptually amazing PPV (with the best name for a PPV to boot) and would really have some success if they did it more often.

My Schedule (assuming 12 PPVs) would look the following:

Late Jan - Royal Rumble
Late Feb - Elimination Chamber (I believe this PPV is amazing, and can start feuds/end feuds/swerve conceptions/etc better than any other PPV)
Early April - WrestleMania
Mid-May - Backlash (This one had a great name in relation to its purpose)
Late June - King of The Ring (I always loved the KotR, and it'd be great to start the tradition again)
Late July - Breaking Point
Mid August - SummerSlam
Mid September - TLC
Late October - Survivor Series
Late November - Bragging Rights (But make it more meaningful somehow. I did love the blue/red ropes btw)
Late December - MitB (Their contract is good for the upcoming year. It ends the year with a bang while giving a fresh look to the new year)

The way they are currently, having Survivor Series and Bragging Right back to back is a bit of overkill. I like the Bragging Rights idea, and Survivor Series has been one of the staples of the WWE for as long as I can recall so I don't wanna see it go either. Perhaps they could keep the PPV name, but change the concept just a little bit? For instance, they could keep up with the "survivor" aspect of the name and have an elimination cage match or something? Have like 3v3 cage match where the winning team is the first to have all 3 of its members escape the cage? Then you get the added strategy question of is it better to escape quickly and leave your teammate in the cage down 3-2, or maybe throw one of your opponents through the door/let him escape easily so you have 3-2 advantage, etc?

I think it'd be cool.

I would love King Of The Ring to return. But have only the final on the ppv and have the quarter finals and semi finals and shit on episodes of Raw and SD.

My favourite gimmick PPV is TLC. Fatal 4 Way was ******ed. Apparently Over The Limit was going too have time limits on their matches, what is so "Over The Limit" about that.
Extreme Rules would be better without ******ed gimmick matches like handicap hog pen, singapore on a pole and shit like that.

Maybe have a PPV called Last Man Standing.

My schedule would be:

Royal Rumble
No Way Out
Wrestlemania
Vengeance
King Of The Ring
Summerslam
No Mercy
Survivor Series
TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs

.

1) My favorite is Extreme Rules because it doesn't lead to 3-4 of the same theme matches on the same night. ER lends itself to an Extreme Rules Match, but they can also do Falls Count Anywhere, Stretcher Matches, I Quit, or really any match that doesn't already have its own PPV.

2) Yes; I'd love to see King of the Ring on PPV again. I enjoyed some of the older KOTR PPVs in the late 90s and I wish they'd come back.

3) I'd remove Bragging Rights; just because it and Survivor Series are redundant IMO. Both are based on brand supremacy. What I'd do is very simple. Put KOTR in the Bragging Rights slot; then have the Bragging Rights trophy given out in a 8 on 8 survivor series elimination match at survivor series...solves both problems as it keeps the concept of Bragging Rights alive; but also keeps the nostalgia of Survivor Series going.

I like many others love the TLC PPV, there are 4 differing match types to be had there (Tables match, Ladder match, Chairs match, TLC match) but the stipulation has to suit the competitors, i.e I personally dont think the chairs match last year suited Cena vs Barrett, ideally Tables match would be better and ladder for Miz v Orton

If WWE would drop this PG nonesense i would love to see (even if it was one time only) WWE INFERNO where the 2 main events are inferno matches and you have 3 mid card matches where a stipulation could be worked out to suit the PPV.

As said before Hell in a cell needs dropping! 15 years ago, when a Hell in a cell match was once every 2 years it was great because the 2 superstars involved gave it everything to make it memorable, and the battles on top were awesome. now its just like a normal match just surrounded by a bit of wire. WWE are over using their best gimmick matches and they are going to become very repetetive if it continues.

My ideal yearly schedual would be....

Jan -Royal Rumble
Feb - No Way Out
Mar - Wrestemania
Apr - Backlash
May - Inferno
June - TLC
July - King Of The Ring
Aug - Summerslam
Sep - Cyber Sunday
Oct - Extreme Rules
Nov - Survivor Series
Dec - Armageddon

Honestly, the only themed PPV I'd keep is EC, because unlike the others there's an actual point to it:

Setting up Wrstlemania.

All the other ones are just... there. And it really dilutes the specialness of the match. But if I had to get rid of a specific PPV, it'd be Hell In A Cell. HIAC used to be THE Gimmick Match, whenever someone announced it you went "OH SHIT", now we're all going "meh".

I miss Cyber Sunday.I remember one time that it was all three shows champions and the vote was for whose title was on the line.It was King Booker vs Cena vs Big Show.Bookers title was on the line and he won obviously.I mean cant have a double champion.Even more so these days. But it would be cool if they did that and had a vote for hte match stipulation.

My favorite themed PPV is Night of Champions. All of the PPVs should be Night of Champions, but they are not, so this is my favorite.

I wish the King of the Ring was on PPV again. I think a PPV with a Tournament would be refreshing. Maybe have a Kings Of The Ring Tournament for the Tag Team Division along with the King Of The Ring Singles Tournament at the same PPV.

I would get rid of Over The Limit and Fatal 4-Way, and add KOTR, to cut it down to 12 PPVs a year. One a month is more than enough, it really is.

(1) My favourite themed PPV is TLC
(2) I would like WWE to use a steel cage PPV which could replace hell in a cell (however I think TNA already have a steel cage themed PPV, Lockdown I think)
(3) I would definately get rid of HIAC. I do like tge match but the PPV sort of just..... fails.

1.) What is your favorite of the themed PPVs?

I like the Extremem Rules PPV. Several different kinds of gimmick matches, none of the usually fail to excite. This is one I could see sticking around.

2.) Is there a theme you wish they would use instead?

Not that I could think of. I kind of want them to stop trying this so much. It's like they're relying on gimmick PPVs to get buys instead of the actual feud.

3.) If you could remove a single themed PPV, what would it be?

If I had to get rid of one, it would be the Hell In A Cell PPV. The Cell is suppose to be the match to end a feud that has reached a boiling point. Instead we get Sheamus and Randy Orton in a Cell just because they're feuding around the time of the PPV. I just don't think this works well.
