The WWE Title Design, The Design Of The Era

Mr Money In The Bank
Over the history we have seen a couple of versions of the WWE title, from the old 80's to the winged eagle, to the attitude era one to the undisputed and now to the spinner.

Of all them different designs they all have one thing in common, they represent the era of time they are used to represent the WWE.

As I'm not aware of much of the early WWE I'll skip on the 80's belt and winged eagle.

At the end of wrestlemaina 14 we seen the beginning of the Stone Cold era. The next night on Raw Vince presented us with a new looking WWF title, something that would go along with the change that had just been brought about the WWF as Austin would introduce us to the highly popular Attitude era.

4 years later IN 2002 the attitude era had slowed down, Austin was moving into retirement, and Vince had toned down the attitude and replaced it with as he called it "ruthless aggression". And along with this new era come a new WWE belt design, the undisputed title. A belt who can easily be related to the likes of Brock who showed nothing but aggression in the ring, JBL who was the same.

And now time to get onto the current WWE "Spinner". Unlike the others this was introducted to us by the then WWE Champ John Cena. A belt that went well with cenas then major rap gimmick. Now with him toning it down it still suited the WWE as a kids belt with alot of flash to it and easily identified as the WWE Title. Even with Cena not using his Rap gimmick it still suits him and the WWE well in this current PG era.

Just to wrap it all up. The design of the WWE title always has been used as a way to represent the current WWE product

I Agree 100% with you, and is kinda cool when they change it!!
The change that Miz made in the belt, are nor for staying obvious, but its cool to see the amount of things that we can do with the tittles!!

IC Tittle is the tittle that have one only change!! Maybe time to redirect it to this era!!

The Era of the Young Talent - (not the PG one)

The WWE Spinner Championship is the best of all times !!
Its the championship that i grew up with, so for ME its the best :D

I agree it does. The spinner belt represents the more kid friendly era. Personally I think it's garbage because I can't stand the fact that they actually have the word "Champ" on the front as opposed to "Champion". But with the changes The Miz made it could be a sign that we will get a new look title after Wrestlemania, assuming Miz loses which is likely.

The thing about the spinner is that it was Cena's personal custom belt, but then it became the official belt. Don't know why when Edge won it they didn't just go back to the "undisputed" version of the belt.

Though I did find it funny when RVD said he wanted to keep it because it spins.

You bring up a very valid point. Just the look really went with the era for each title design. My 2 favorites were the winged eagle which looked great on all the 80s and early 90s legends that caried it and the additude era belt it just looked great on Stone Cold - HHH and everyone inbetween. And even thought its really cemented in history, I HATE! the spinner belt imo it was a disgrace to take the prestieges wwe championship and turn it into a kids toy. It was one of the big reasons i started watching TNA!

I texted my buddy when Miz came out without the belt and said, they better get rid of that awful awful title belt.

While I don't disagree that the belt represents the era, it's still an awful looking title. Outside of the diva's championship, its the worst belt out there and its the signature belt. Look at the World Heavyweight Championship. 30 years, one design, classic... the Undisputed Championship had that look too. We need a new strap after WM for The Miz to wear

The Current WWE Title is the worst belt I have EVER seen. With this belt came the loss of credibility of being WWE Champion. Besides the introduction of the WCW/WH Championship

I grew up with the Winged WWF title and in my eyes it was the last title that mattered

Look at the World Heavyweight Championship. 30 years, one design, classic... the Undisputed Championship had that look too. We need a new strap after WM for The Miz to wear

The World Heavyweight Championship was introduced in 1985 as "The Big Gold Belt" in NWA before being introduced in WCW in 93'

So technically 26 years lol

i like the design of the new one but never liked the spinner part of it. its just stupid. if they take off the spinner thing it would be good. cuz the only way it makes sense is when cena had it with his "rapper" gimmick. it was dumb when someone else had the belt. it was like when anyone had their own spin off to the belt (miz, edge, cena, stone cold, hardy in tna).

i dont like the attitude era belt for the era. it didnt represent the era to me. it looked as if it were for the old school era and visa versa. the undisputed was perfect for the time with jbl and brock.

for me i think that the winged belt was the best. it was just the way it looked. then i think the pg era one without the spin is next.

From the belt Hogan had in the 80's to Brets winged eagle to Austin and the attitude belt, they've all been great looking belts. They looked awsome. Even the smoking skull belt. That was perfect. It was a screw you to Vince, but when someone else had the belt, they changed it to attitude belt. When Cena came out with the spinner, it had to be the worst looking belt ever. I don't care if it was for Cena, but the belt then and now sucks. Who cares if it was for Cena and his rap thing. For the WWE to keep the belt around for this long is dumb. Its about time they change that ugly ass thing and bring out a real belt again. If they do and it looks like the new tag titles, well hell, Vince should retire

for me i think that the winged belt was the best. it was just the way it looked. then i think the pg era one without the spin is next.

I agree. I just looked at the different belts over the years on wikipedia. That is by far the best looking one (IMO).

It would be great if they could make a new belt with that look. Bring some class back to the title belt instead of the spinner and cartoonish look the recent ones have.

I don't think the belts really match the error. As mentioned before, the title belt during the attitude era didn't reflect it at all. The beat up hardcore title was a better representation of the era haha

As far as I'm concernd, the Big Gold Belt is te standard by whch all other title belts are to be judged.

That said, there are some gorgeous belts out there. One of the best is....

It's simple, yet very elegant. The fact that is bears a basic resemblence, at least to me, to the Big Gold Belt, is another thing in its favor as a great belt.

Honestly, though, I think that a professional wrestling championship belt holds just a little more prestige is it never changes on a major level. I understand that change is inevitable. But, in wrestling, changes like this happen entirely too often. Look at boxing title belts. They're gawdy monstrosities, by today's standards, but they have prestige to them, since those same belts were worn with pride by some of the greats.

The Intercontinental Title has that. The Big Gold Belt has that. Honestly, the best thing that WWE could do with the WWE Championship, in my opinion, would be to reintroduce the Eagle belt, with the only change being to replace the WWF logo with a WWE one.

I have to agree with most people here who say that they dont like the current belt.
When Cena first debuted it as his custom belt i liked it for that very reaosn, it was Cenas belt. I never assumed it would become the mainstay belt.
Over the years that i have been watching WWF/WWE there have been few belt changes however i still think that the design of the UNDISPUTED CHAMPIONSHIP BELT had by far the best design.
It was simple but elegant at the same time and i loved the shape of the face of the belt. It really did look like a REAL CHAMPIONSHIP belt.
The current Champ belt looks like a toy and i just cant stand it.

Are you kidding, replace the IC title? why because its what 13 years old. What a poor excuse that is. If anything they need to keep that belt, plus the fact I tell a lie, the belt was replaced when Christian won it when it came out of retirement. Whilst the same sort of design, little things were changed about it. Therefore the belt is not the oldest, that goes to the WWE version of the big gold.

Yes they change the belt, but you are amazed they turned the 'WW' around, what the heck, the belt could originally do that when it spun. Its nothing new, its simply fixed upside down rather than being fixed the right way up. I don't see how anyone can be amazed by it.

However looking at the following:

The WWE title
The Tag Team titles
The Divas title

I hope they leave the damn belts alone, because whoever is in charge of designing these belts absolutely sucks. They have gone for good looking title belts to cheap looking ones. Then again the cheap look represents what most of them stand for now anyways.

I would agree the WWE title belt does change design for every era, this is started since the Hogan era. Nothing new in this area.

The current belt/spinner belt is a piece of shit and like a lot of people have said looks like a toy/prop and just looks stupid and cheap. I've always liked the big gold belt from when Ric Flair originaly had it in the NWA, it looks like a championship belt should look, I like how it would cover up most of the midsection, and it looked elegant. Right now the TNA belt blows everything the WWE has out the water, but we'll see what/if they debut a new one after wrestlemainia.

I agree but the spinner belt has to go. It was representative of Cena's rapper gimmick and he hasn't done that for some time...Reminds me of some wannabe putting the $30 spinner rims on some rusty 80's Pontiac. They should go back to the winged eagle title or something similar. That way it looks better and it kinda means something too.

I texted my buddy when Miz came out without the belt and said, they better get rid of that awful awful title belt.

To a degree I agree that the spinner belt represents the current era of the WWE but I don't think that's a good thing. The belt was meant to be a custom belt for Cena just as the Smoking Skull belt was a custom for Stone Cold. I agree that the spinner belt and the divas belt are horrible. But which is worse? The Spinner Belt, the Divas Title, or that stupid custom belt TNA made for Jeff Hardy?

when Miz came out on monday i thought to myself FINALLY we are getting a new belt. I have disliked the spinner belft since day one. My favorite belt of all time is the winged eagle but i love the attitude era, smoking skull belt, and undisputed designs. my dislike for the spinner belt became hatred once it became the main wwe championship rather than Cenas custom belt. The only thing i can home for is after mania they debut a new title.

p.s. did anyone else notice that Miz's "new" belt is a replica belt from wweshop.com with th spinner locked in place upside down... and people called the spinner a toy belt before... lol

my personal favorites are the undisputed belt, The Big Gold Belt as it is being called & The current IC belt all three are very classy & professional looking

the spinner belt is awful when Cena debuted it i was a huge fan of his (before i knew pro wrestling) but the second i saw it i hated it because its gawky classless & shows disrespect to the history of the company

i also hate the divas belt, Hardy's belt, & the new tag titles

I was a huge fan of the Undisputed Championship, it just had the look of a World Title. I know Vince would never bring back an old title, but he should. Every title they have designed recently has looked terrible. I can't imagine what a newly designed WWE Championship would look like.

I would rather see a new WWE logo. It never really changed when they lose their suit to the World Wildlife Fund. They removed the F. "Enough is enough and its time for a change!" It wouldn't have to be anything fancy just simple block letters would be enough for me.

The real question is what comes first a truly new WWE Title or a true WWE logo?

I love the Big Gold Belt. To me it represents WRESTLING. That being said, I don't think theres anything wrong with the other major title representing Sports Entertainment. The current design (logo rightside up) is awesome as long as it doesn't spin. The first thing you should notice on the WWE Championship is a big WWE logo. The Diva's belt is good too. Yeah, it's a butterfly, but they're women so it fits. You'd have to be on drugs to want a men's belt to look like a butterfly (Hardy Sheen). I hate the new tag belts. To me they look like giant pennies.

My favorite belt ever was the second IC design (The one held by Savage, Steamboat, Perfect, etc...)

Spinner is the second worst belt design For the WWE belt. The worst was Big Green (Backlund, Iron Sheik)

My Favorite WWWF/WWF/WWE Title design were the Hogan 86, Andre 87 (Made for Andre before WM3, and they was suposed to use it there after, but never did), and Big Eagle (Austin, Rock etc...)

Now IMO, when they unified the women's belts, I was glad that they kept the Butterfly. The "Explosion" as I like to call the Women's Title belt was a piece of crap. But the best design they ever had for woman was the one held by Alundra Blaze.

I'm a huge fan of the current belt. I think until the next era is defined THEN change it. Especially since I just ordered this belt lol.

The Winged Eagle will always be my fav and will soon be in my collection.

The "spinner" belt is an atrocity. I'd rather see the old NWA Brisco belt rather than that shit. The M spinner is just as bad---the belt needs to represent regalness and the pinnacle of the industry, that belt is a freakin child's toy that looks unbelivably fake--making the wrestling product even less believable:disappointed::banghead:

My Favorite belt right now is probably the World Heavyweight Title, because of how all the superstars can wear it without it looking out of place...If you put the WWE Champ belt on Taker, well thats gonna look quite weird and it would make him lose all his credibility of being a dark ominious being

As for my worst favorite belt it has to be the WWE Tag Belts...like for real guys, who wants two "gladiators" (botched spelling possibly) on the front of the belt, i really like the two belts for each person, it shows that they are the tag team kings of both brands. For me they completely ruined the tag belts.

The Big Gold belt is the belt which was created for Ric Flair. The design is crazy good. Imagine the amount of time it would have taken to scribe out all of those little images on the belt. I had a plastic one, replica, growing up and it was cool to look at.

Personally though...

The WWF Winged Eagle Championship belt owns all. The design was simple, belt looked good no matter where someone put it. The world was represented well; to me if you're the World Champion, you have to have the World on it and really I just loved the belt.
