The problem is that NOBODY could have pulled that off. Old School Kane when he first entered the WWF with that mask was just plain scary. A gigantic, mostrously cut MONSTER. He had the whiskers sticking out, the act down perfectly, had Paul Bearer to compliment him, could literally chokeslam people with ONE ARM, and tomstoned the Undertaker. Trying to recreate that with ANYBODY is practically impossible. The only person that could have come close was the Undertaker.
As for the angle, I hope they scrapped it. Kane is way too valuable to be wasting away with this guy. If they wanted to bring the mask back (which I disagree with) they could have done it differently. Why not have Kane go on a losing streak and then have him return to the mask because it brings him power, or something along those lines. Hell, you could even fake him burning himself, have him take a month+ off, and then just show up with the mask.
Personally, though, I'd rather see the Kane we saw right after the mask was removed. He was a violent monster that listened to nobody. It was great, he'd come out one week and destroy the top face and the next the top heel. To me, that's what Kane shoudl be. I also think he should bring back the top that he used to wear when he was demasked as it made him look more intimidating IMO.
