Carolina trading Smith for a QB would be stupid as fuck, you'd get a QB, and he'd be left with nobody to throw to, I mean sure Gettis is on his way, but he's far from being a number 1 WR, if anything trade DeAngelo Williams, he's getting old, his best days are likely behind him and you have two other good RBs in Stewart, and Goodson
DeAngelo Williams will be a FA this off-season. We likely aren't resigning him because of the fact that Stewart and Goodson have shown great potential in being our future.
Unfortunately, I think that is a mistake. Williams
IS a great back regardless of the injuries he's suffered over the past two years. When he's healthy - he's one of the top 10, if not at least top 6. (I can't say 5 because I'm thinking of Chris Johnson, Peterson, Turner, Steven Jackson & MJD just to start - and guys like Hillis, Foster, Rice and Charles are making a case as well)
Still, where in the NFL gameplan does it say it's a bad idea to have 3 solid RBs? So, yeah, Williams should be resigned just because he has talent and isn't a slouch.
I'm just gonna throw out that Chad Ochocinco may be available. Get him and Steve Smith together again (they were teammates at Santa Monica College in 2000)? That'd be some good shit.
Of course the Panthers owner is a cheap bastard who'd likely not want to put the money in the team.
1. Steve Smith is under contract until 2012, which means Carolina will first look to find someone to sign and pair with him - before looking to trade him away and hurt us worse.
2. Chad 85
WILL NOT be brought to Carolina unless Richardson does something he isn't prone to doing; and that's signing a guy with an attitude and a cocky mouth. (yeah, yeah - I say that and Steve Smith is
ON the team.. but Chad is worse, and has less talent in my opinion)
Richardson doesn't take chances on drama cases - which is exactly why guys like T.O. and Randy Moss weren't even a thought in his mind when both were available.
Would I love to see it? Hell yes. But it's an even bigger pipe dream than thinking Carolina will turn their season around next year and win a Superbowl with Bill Cowher.
And Will's right, this year there is a chance that the #1 overall gets traded (hasn't happened since 2004). If Carolina doesn't want Luck, they could trade to 4-6 and get a lot back (at least 1 more first rounder, and then some).
This. Carolina, and Jerry Richardson specifically, does it's off-season work through drafting rather than FA. Because of that, Richardson will look to save
some money on the first overall pick by
not signing the 1st overall guy.. AND he'll pick up additional draft picks to continue the youth movement.
Not really, not with the cba about to expire and lockout looming, there could be a lot of changes from a business stand point and franchises are going to want to know what those changes are BEFORE committing shit loads of money to anybody, and that includes rookies
Meh. I just can't see the league being locked out before the draft or next season. Because of that, I'm sure everything will be figured out and fixed/set in place by the Draft.
Yes, but rarely do you ever see a top 5 overall selection being traded because it costs to much money. How much did Bradford get? All of that and he hadn't even played a down yet? Please.
Plus, those teams could go after some guys (McNabb, Palmer) or take on a chance like Newton or Mallett.
I'd be surprised if someone actually bit on trading up, especially if they think they still have a shot at Luck anyways. You say Carolina shouldn't get Luck, then Arizona (who'll be a top 5 pick) might as well wait as Denver won't need a top pick and they'd (barring a win) have a first pick over Buffalo and Detroit because their schedule was easier.
As ST/P said - the owner of the Carolina Panthers does
NOT like spending a ton of money. Due to that, he'll look to trade the pick to someone else and still get a valuable player and then some.
What good would it be to take another rookie QB? And why take a DE/DT at the first overall pick, when you could trade down - get more picks - and still get the same DE/DT for a cheaper value?
There are plenty of teams who'll look to spend the money to move up and grab something great. Dallas instantly comes to mind - but that all depends on if they still believe Romo is the answer to their future.
