The problem with them is they took a huge gamble on the Ubaldo deal and lost two potential starters in White and Pomeranz (although they haven't done great in Colorado that's partially due to their dumb way of setting the rotation and the fact that it's Colorado). They have a few guys on the infield that have some potential but they're still throwing out bones to guys like Johnny Damon, Travis Hafner, and Grady Sizemore. Sadly for your sake Harthan/kb, they might have to deal a guy like Santana in hopes to getting a nice arm or two back. If they're going to be a threat their best chances is to develop a strong rotation.

That's what blew me away: the solution to our rotation issues this year was Derrick Lowe. Who on earth thought he was a good option?

I don't think dealing Santana is a good idea. I think the best course of action is to rebuild; trade Choo now, Perez when they feel the time is right, and Cabrera when his contract is up. Extend Pestano at the nearest opportunity; he's a young closer in the making, as good as Chapman or Kimbrel frankly. This gives you three young players to work with; Pestano, Kipnis, and Santana. Evaluate Masterson and maybe McAllister as possible long termers, but everyone else just cut ties with when the time comes. I would also work on trying to extend Brantley, pending another season or two of results.

Then, with this handful of workable talent, you have a few shitty years and draft well, focusing on college players as we move closer to Lindor and Naquin being ready. There's a shit ton of young arms with promise at the lower levels, and if a handful of them pan out we could have a solid rotation just at the time we get Lindor and Naquin, if they progress according to schedule. Round it out with a handful of free agents and I think there's a contender in 2016/2017 or so. But right now, it's best to just give up and rebuild.

I took a weekend trip to Cincinnati for the Cubs/Reds series. A few observations.

I sat in the upper deck all three days. They had these fancy stairs that moved on their own to take you to the upper deck. I’m not familiar with such things at Wrigley Field. Nice not to go climbing before the game.

Concession stands sucked. I believe the basic ballpark foods should be available at each concession stand. Hot dogs, pizza, nachos, popcorn, peanuts, etc. I sat on the right field side. Why did I have to walk all the way to left field just to get some nachos? And why were there no hot dog vendors? Not that it really mattered. I got a hot dog immediately on the first day and that was my last one. The food was just not very good.

As you might expect from the modern day parks, the ballpark was very nice. My seats gave me a great view of the whole field, the perfect view of the giant scoreboard, and a nice view of the Ohio River. There were some nice activities for kids around the stadium and it was a nice family friendly atmosphere.

The music was pretty annoying. I’m used to simple old school organ music at a game. I don’t mind a more modern atmosphere but I found the music for the players to be out of place at a baseball game. I couldn’t even understand most of it.

I saw some nice looking ladies at the ballpark over the weekend but not as many as I would see at Wrigley for a single game. I went unnoticed by all of them.

There were two younger girls who sat to my right on Saturday night. I’d guess they were about 19 or 20. They came to the game by themselves and knew a lot about the game. They were usually quiet and into the game but I overheard them talking a bit and was surprised by their knowledge. Not to sound sexist but I wouldn’t expect that from two young girls. Thought it was pretty cool.

I’ve always said Cubs fans are everywhere but I was a little surprised to see how many were there over the weekend. The Reds are among the best teams in baseball while the Cubs are among the worst. I knew there would be some Cub fans but there were more than I expected considering the standings.

The Reds Hall of Fame Museum is pretty awesome. It’s a great display of the history of the game’s oldest franchise. There have been a lot of great players to come through the Queen City and they are all represented along with tons of memorabilia, statues, and the World Series trophies among many other things. It was really cool. One disappointment was there was no Pete Rose plaque. I assumed this was the Reds private building and they could do what they wanted. I was told that MLB would not even allow Rose in the Reds HOF which I thought was really lame.

Overall it was a fun trip and I now have a stadium I can cross off my list.

It looks like I'm going to have to start an annual trip to London.

What's up with your boys not giving MJD a new contract? He led the league in rushing last year yet his contract resembles that of Marcedes Lewis who doesn't even make most guys top ten list in terms of tight ends.

Just curious, does anyone know why the Marlins and DBacks played a double header today? I know those two teams couldn't be rained out.

MJD was given a new contract a few years ago that, at the time, made him a top three highest paid running back. That was before he was the full-time starter and he had yet to prove he was worthy of such a contract (he obviously has been). The deal he signed, which he has two years remaining on it, was front loaded with a huge signing bonus. Pretty much everyone in Jacksonville, from the fans to the media, side with the Jags in this one. If he only had one year remaining on his contract, I'm sure people would be feeling differently. But with two years left on his contract, and Rashad Jennings looking like a solid starting running back, MJD is losing whatever small amount of leverage he thought he had.

Don't even get me started on Marcedes. He went from a great 2010 season to an awful 2011 season, and has looked pretty mediocre this preseason. The good news is that Blaine Gabbert actually looks like a QB now, and Justin Blackmon looks like the real deal. I know it's only preseason, but it's hard not to get excited about the Jags so far. I'm not saying they're going to win 11 games and go to the playoffs, but it wouldn't surprise me if their at or around .500 at year's end.

Apparently there was a rainout in May. First home doubleheader in Arizona history.

They couldn't get the roof closed that day? Weird. Speaking of weird I just heard the Rays and A's have an off day on Sunday. I've never heard of a team having a scheduled day off on a Sunday.

I only see about 2 winnable games outside the Jaguars' division and that's Minnesota and Miami.

I think the Jags can will go 3-3 in the division at worst. I think they will most likely go 4-2 in AFC South play. Outside of the division, I think the Vikings, Bengals, Raiders, Bills, Jets and Dolphins are all games that the Jags could win. I'm not saying they will win all of those, but I think the Jags will be competitive in those games. I don't think a 7-9 to 8-8 record is an outrageous prediction based on the way this team has played in the preseason. That all could change once the games start counting, but they look worlds better compared to this time last year.

I realize MJD got a new contract a few years ago before he became a full time starter but he has more then outperformed that contract. He had a big signing bonus but after that his contract averages out to just over 6 mill a year for 5 years. At this point in his career he is a top two to three running back in the NFL yet he is the 8th highest paid. Once his contract expires he will be 29 and I guarantee Jacksonville isn't going to dish out a huge contract to a running back who will be one year away from 30 and have the number of total carries MJD will have at that point. No offense to Rashad Jennings but if you want Jacksonville to get anywhere near the .500 mark then they need MJD.

This has been the greatest 48 hours. The UFC goes haywire yesterday, and today the Red Sox might dump Beckett, Gonzalez, Crawford, and Punto to LA.

Another stat about the Tribe that makes you shake your head: we haven't won consecutive games against the same team since the 4th of July.

On this day in 1995 Cal Ripken Jr. broke Lou Gerhig's consecutive game record. I know I just said it was 1995 but I have a hard time believing that was actually 17 years ago. I remember that day so well as if it just happened. That was such an awesome night. Probably my all time favorite baseball memory, at least until the Cubs win the World Series.

ESPN is doing a little thing on Gerry Sandusky (Ravens announcer) on how all kinds of idiots think he's the same guy and harass him on Twitter, stores, hotels, so on and so forth. I think it's classy as hell to get the word out, considering how many fucking idiots there are who need to hear about this because they're, well, fucking idiots.
