The Shawshank Redemption.

Thank God. Avatar was terrible.

Except how awesome the landscapes were.

Seriously, people who hate Avatar because it's trendy to hate Avatar are the worst type of critic. Yeah, the story was pretty vanilla, but how could you not get sucked in by those graphics and the world Cameron built?

It's no cinematic masterpiece, but it was a total game changer in terms of 3D animation, and it deserves respect for that.

Shawshank isn't the best film ever, but it is very close.

I wouldn't even put it in the top 10. Maybe top 25. Maybe if it had a leading man half as charming as Humphrey Bogart. Or Pierce Brosnan.

Aw who am I kidding, Morgan Freeman could talk the pants off of me if he wanted to.

Ok, fair enough. I was referring to the Pocahontas ripoff bland predictable story aspect. Visually the movie was fucking amazing.

It was never supposed to be a story that blew people away. For fuck's sake, the plot revolved around something called "unobtainium" and the good guys could literally communicate telepathically with nature for no reason other than to show how they were one with the earth that the bad guys were raping. It was kind of insulting really.

But how can you be insulted when you're immersed into a world with floating rock mountains and dragons and giant benevolent dinosaurs and blue people that can do crazy shit an a planet so well portrayed that it's actually hard to believe that it's NOT real?

So yes, the story sucked, but it was not about the story. It was always about the graphics, and the graphics alone are what made it into a billion dollar success, thus proving that people don't go to the movies to see a story or to exercise their minds... they just want to be taken out of reality for a couple of hours.

Except isn't that the exact same criticism of the Transformer movies? Why should Avatar get a free pass for having a pathetic plot just because it looks great, while Transformers generally gets absolutely shit on for having the same issues? Avatar was a ridiculously overhyped shitty movie with stunning visuals. For me, the visuals don't make up for the rest of it.
