For over two decades, Sting dominated the sport of professional wrestling as one its most popular and successful stars. He was a multi-time World Champion for the NWA and WCW … A household name around the world … And a major catalyst for the wrestling boom of the 1990’s, Sting is one of the greatest wrestlers in history to never work for Vince McMahon.

-Sting has wrestled Ric Flair for 45+ minutes on several occassions.

-Sting participated in one of the greatest feuds (and build-ups) of all time with Hollywood Hogan in 1997.

Sting is a fourteen-time World Champion, having held the NWA World Heavyweight Championship twice, the WCW World Heavyweight Championship six times, the WCW International World Heavyweight Championship twice and the TNA World Heavyweight Championship four times. He is a WCW Triple Crown winner, has held 21 total championships between WCW and TNA, and is the only man to hold the NWA, WCW, and TNA World Titles in his career. Sting was inducted into the TNA Hall of Fame in 2012.

Also in "Icon's" favor - his dominant record against everyone above him in the seedings that he has faced.

He only ever lost one match at "Starrcade" - WCW's "WrestleMania" (in a tournament he ended up winning the same night).

WCW's "Nitro" beat the WWF's "Monday Night RAW" for 84 straight weeks from June 17th 1996 to April 6th 1998 - Sting's transition to the Crow character who would usurp "Hollywood" Hogan and the nWo ran from September 15th 1996 to April 19th 1998 and the WWF regained control of the war when Sting was moved down the order in favor of Savage, Nash and Hogan again (coincidence?). The only period after this when WCW occasionally beat the WWF (and even had an unbeaten run of 6 weeks) was during the period that he feuded with Bret Hart with the WWF regaining control when Hart put Sting out for several months.

The big argument that gets thrown at the Stinger is the length of his title reigns and the fact that he wasn't always at the top of the card but that is generally because most posters are too young to realize that, due to it's territorial roots, heels traditionally held the big belt in the NWA / WCW with faces doing the chasing. As such, heels (or the original tweeners) traditionally held the championship for faces to chase. Logic dictates that Sting couldn't always be the chaser.

However, whether or not he was in the top storyline, I doubt even the most hardcore opponent of Sting in this tournament would begrudge him being the WCW fans No. 1 and true franchise of the organisation.

I'd have no problem backing Sting against most wrestlers in this tournament. He has had a phenomenal career and his importance and loyalty to WCW cannot be ignored- along with Ric Flair, Sting was THE guy in WCW in my opinion, and the way he totally transformed his gimmick into the "Crow" style character to face to nWo is one of the greatest angles I have ever seen.
