The Force Awakens Spoiler thread

I'm salivating imagining the thinly-veiled homophobia which would champion and ultimately poison the potentially-reasonable argument that such a thing would be shoe-horned in.

Daddy needs some drama.

Nothing homophobic about it, I became an ordained minister with the primary intent of marrying gay people, since they likely have a smaller pool of individuals at the ready to do so for them. I don't charge anyone, either.

Its just the only thing anyone would be talking about, sort of overshadowing what Star Wars is supposed to be, I guess. I don't remember exactly what show or film it was, but the director said "there are plenty of gay characters in our universe, we just don't make it a goal to revolve their character around their sexuality"

Rumours flying about that Finn is a Calrissian, although it has been denied and seems unlikely.
Since you brought up Calrissian, can someone explain how the Skywalker lightsabre survived the fall from Cloud City?

I hope Luke's hand also survived the fall and was put in a jar to preserve its regeneration energy.

Nah. Once was enough for me.

I'd love for Rey not to be Luke's daughter. Everyone being related to everyone makes the galaxy feel painfully small. If I had my way, we'd never find out who Rey's parents are.

I was going to make a really stupid reference saying you don't need to be related to anyone to have access to the force, but then I remembered Yoda was a thing.

So, like, duh.

Fucking agreed. Though I'm unsure if it would contribute or detract from the "teen who is special" trope we've been beaten to death with this decade.

I know you're good. I'm talking about how the unwashed masses would react.

I know you got that "How is it weird when you have interspecies relationships on full display in every film?" card up your sleeve, burning a hole in it.

The weakness of responses in the face of such obvious logic would be nice, true.

Loved the movie but there was one thing that I wasn't sold on and that was Ren going down to Rey like 15 minutes after she figured out she had the force. I know Ren wasn't in the best shape after taking that hit from Chewy but the guy has been trained in the ways of the force since he was a kid, taking care of some scavenger chick that's starting to figure it out and just started using a lightsaber for the first time shouldn't be too difficult for him. It's minor, in the whole scheme of things it really doesn't matter but I found it odd that the main villain in Episode 7 (outside of Snoke) was kind of a bitch, not as whiny as Anakin was but still.

2) While he's been trained to some degree, he's probably one of the only people in the known galaxy at this point using such a weapon. He's likely been getting by on brute force until now.

While this might further explain the fear show by Snoke and Kylo concerning the return of Skywalker, there are other Force users within the First Order. Not only is there Snoke, there are Knights of Ren, who Rey sees in her Force vision. Granted, none of them are visibly wielding a lightsabre but it would not be too much of a reach, especially if they are Fallen Jedi apprentices like Kylo or new age Sith.

As for Kylo's inability to defeat Rey quickly, his injury, mental scarring, the draw of the Light and incomplete training would provide partial explanation. However, I think the major component is Rey herself. For Snoke and Ren to be able to feel an awakening in the Force suggests that she (and perhaps Finn too) is something special. Not some ordinary run of the mill Force sensitive but something in the mould of Anakin Skywalker in terms of adeptness.

Let's face it, within mere moments she was able to shield herself against a trained Dark Jedi's invasion mental attacks and even infiltrate his mind. She was then able to grasp the Jedi mind trick and successfully use it (on James Bond of all people), develop Force telekinesis to take the lightsabre from Kylo and then defeat him in her first battle.

She is no New Hope Luke. Rey is something more.

Full-disclosure: I caught very little regarding the Knights of Ren, but I've seen plenty of people bringing them up.

I'll be using that to justify a rewatch sooner rather than later.

I hope Luke's hand also survived the fall and was put in a jar to preserve its regeneration energy.

My guess would be that it landed in the bottom of Cloud City. By falling through those adjacent tunnels, Luke did not.

Actually, this was another plot point that was used in the Expanded Universe. Anakin's lightsabre is retrieved and used in the Heir to the Empire trilogy. And who wields it you ask? Well, Luke's hand is also retrieved and is used to create a clone of Luke Skywalker, who is then trained in the Dark Side...

Could that be who Snoke is?

Well good luck finding anything, since along with the republic and the climate of things, it was only alluded to, not really fleshed out.

Something that's a bit overlooked, how fucking COOL is the whole "turncoat stormtrooper" angle

Yeah, that was really great. Its kind of scary to learn these guys are actually kidnappes and brainwashed constantly.

No wonder they can't aim. Brain damage.

Disney did have a lesbian couple on a sitcom. An acknowledged lesbian couple.
I may have under-estimated the Mouse. I'm sure it's only a matter of hours till I'm clearing up this misunderstanding with their lawyers.

Makes sense. Though I do hope stuff like this makes it into the text at some point.

No resemblance to Mark Hamill.

Though most people wouldn't know. Unlike me, they haven't spent the last decade watching him in con footage and DVD extras. I was stunned by the number of people who remarked to me how rough Hamill and Fisher aged. Remove Ford from the spotlight for the last thirty years and people would be saying the same about him.

I wouldn't be surprised if Finn is special. He did overcome his Stormtrooper training/mind control.

I actually still don't trust Finn. I suspect he's a sleeper agent of some kind, 'designed' to infiltrate the Resistance ranks with good intentions, but end up being their undoing when a key phrase is said, or something to that effect.

I think Snoke mentions that Kylo is the leader of the Knights of Ren. Some additional information suggests that much like the Jedi were not part of the Republic or Vader was not part of the Imperial hierarchy, the Knights of Ren are not technically part of the First Order.

Apparently Grenn from Game of Thrones played one of the Knights of Ren in the short viewing of them.

I could see them being deployed almost as bounty-hunters to kill Luke and capture/kill Rey in Ep. VIII.

I wouldn't be surprised if Finn is special. He did overcome his Stormtrooper training/mind control.

That would tie in nicely.

Every Force user has a different set of skills. Some are expert at telekinesis; some like Vader can absorb energy from a blaster; some are not as proficient at lightsabre combat as others. Perhaps Rey is just more naturally gifted in that regard than Finn.

It could also be suggested that having watched Han be killed both Finn and Rey were fighting on pure emotion, which gives your power a tremendous boost - see Luke defeating Vader in ROTJ.

Makes sense. Though I do hope stuff like this makes it into the text at some point.

I think one of the little creatures, Unaughts I think, who work in the junk rooms of Cloud City and threw around parts of C3PO to keep it away from Chewie are supposed to have found both the lightsabre and the severed hand in the books. They were about to melt it down only for Vader to find them. There were then sent to a fortress owned by the Emperor and later used by an insane Dark Jedi clone called Joruus C'Baoth to make a Dark Side clone of Luke.

No resemblance to Mark Hamill.

Doesn't necessarily have to. A rushed or deformed clone could explain his appearance.

Snoke certainly seems to have been through the wars.

This was in my post at one point, but I felt it distracted from my spiel about people aging.

How much EU stuff do you really expect to be rehashed for the new trilogy?

There have already been several things that could be claimed were inspired by the books.

Han and Leia's son Jacen Solo turned to the Dark side as Darth Caedus. The name Ben was also used for Luke's son. There was also a superweapon called the Galaxy Gun capable of sending planet-killing projectiles through hyperspace. There have also been fanatical off-shoots of the Empire in the mould of the First Order.

The later books, set about 40 years after the movies, also had no problem killing off major characters. Chewie and Anakin Solo (Han and Leia's second son) died during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion (which is a tremendous 20 book arc). In turning to the Dark side, Jacen Solo killed Luke's wife, Mara Jade, and was in turn killed by his own twin sister Jaina.

Plenty of ammunition for good stories.

I'm curious if they'll give us an altered version of the One Sith saga. Might be a great way to end Episode VIII if they want to run something akin to Emperor Strikes Back where the villains come out on top. Give us a whole Legion of Sith ready to unleash hell.

Perhaps something similar.

There certainly seemed to be at least a half dozen Knights of Ren plus Kylo and Snoke, so that would be a decent start. Plus if the First Order are kidnapping children, you could imagine that Snoke has them identifying Force sensitives as well.

Enough of a handful for Luke, Rey and Finn (if he is able) perhaps.

It was interesting though that Snoke was not just the usual overly confident Sith, who underestimated the power of the Light to not only tempt Kylo but also in the person of Skywalker, who he clearly fears.

Finally saw this beautiful bitch last night and was both amazed and underwhelmed. On one hand, YES! All the things I want in a Star Wars nostalgia trip, fuck yeah. On the other hand....how dare you kill Han and how dare you focus all of your god damn advertisements on Luke being in this film and then have him appear for a grand total of 15 seconds....for god's sake he gets second billing in the credits! For FIFTEEN SECONDS! Malarkey....MALARKEY. I CALL MALARKEY.

I really dug it and all but honestly, as much as I'll get shit for it, I only liked it a slight bit better than Episode III. Go ahead, string me up.

Still rad as fuck. Excited for the sequels. When's the next one? 2017?

Can you show me one advertisement where he's in? He's not in any trailer, he's not in any poster.
