The FCW thread

I've heard there were technical issues that mean the show won't be aired in full until 11 pm Thursday.

Also, I am fucking stoked for the new FCW arena. 1,000 fans + improved production values + awesome set + potential title changes = Happy Remix.

Last Sundays show is up:

Some notes:

  • Ohno is a face now which is pretty good. I've always preferred Hero as a face.
  • I liked the Ohno/Cesaro match. It had some fine spots including me seeing the Topé for the first time in a very long time.
  • The match told a decent story with both men trying ot put each other away as quick as possible to look dominant but neither could & it was pissing off Cesaro.
  • Bray Wyatt has far and away the best gimmick in FCW right now and plays it to a tee.
  • His mic work was different from what we've seen and seemed a little religiously influenced. I really wish they could explain the point of Eli Cottonwood being there. Why does an arsonist have a bodyguard? I he's just a friend then why is he treated like a puppet?
  • His little mannerisms such as kissing Benico's forehead, lying down next to him and doing the dance again are always great to see. He shouldn't repeat himself though. Like when he sang time is on my side.
  • Brad Maddox as a psycho doesn't phase me at all. He came off forcibly as trying to be Dean Ambrose. He's just not believable. I prefer the goof. Mentioning their past was a nice touch of consistency.
  • Sofia Cortez is hot as hell.
  • Richie has been leaving sour tastes in my mouth as of late. Should i blame Victor for this?
  • AW with Graves and Cater is a weird match but it's not without it's charm. AW is a good spokesman and i loved the fact that Corey Graves was smelling Summer Rae's hair. A match against the Ascension is something I REALLY wanna see.
  • The Kruger/Bo match was good but it was a shadow of other matches that they've had. It was nothing to write home about aside from one really good move from Kruger.

Overall it was a pretty good show with a lot happening during it. Ring work was good to great and it gets a solid 8/10 for me.

No review this week. I've got to revise. I'll do SOM style notes though
  • I got bored in the opening minutes of the Ohno/Cesaro match so I skipped it
  • Bray Wyatt is awesome. Everything about him is done perfectly.
  • Brad Maddox seems to be going in a new direction with his character. He's been a magnificently irritating goofball since his first feud with Steamboat, but now he seems to be going in a more serious, borderline deranged direction. I approve of this.
  • Richie and Rick are a pair of guys who are as skilled in the ring as they are uncharismatic. The match was solid. Nothing more, nothing less
  • Richie is a trooper for taking and selling that Huricanrana.
  • The finish seemed a bit abrupt. I mean it was fine. Superkicks from fucking nowhere are one of Richie specialities but it just cane from nowhere in a bad way. Like they were told to go home before they were ready.
  • Bo and Leo have really good chemistrym and the match was good, but this match was still easily their second worst match on TV (the worst being their 3 minute clinic from 2010) but it had nothing on their clashes last year for a few reasons. The first was because it needed more time. This match could really have done with an extra five minutes, if for no other reason than to prevent another abrupt ending. It just seemed like neither guy was able to get anything really going before they had to shut it off. The second was because of what happened at the tapings. Bo's wrestling again next week (read, less than an hour later) and potentially again an hour after that. He needs to be in as good shape as he can be, and that meant both men had to hold back a lot. The thing that made Bo/Leo I so fucking good was that both men took it up a level in that match and it showed. Here, it was a limp wristed match which couldn't get going because they had less than 10 minutes of air time and holding back. That said, a bad Leo/Bo match is still miles better than most FCW matches.

Honestly, if I was booking the show I'd have cut the Wyatt/Salazar match (moved to another episode of the taping) and taken a few minutes off the opener to give to the ME and second match because they really needed it. Hell, the episode (which was longer on youtube than normal) seems to have cut off mid replay. That's how strapped for time the episode was. Yeah.

And SoM, to address your concerns about Richie, the problem is that he's stagnating due to the booking. He's in exactly the same spot as Kruger was in last year, only with no end in sight for his holding pattern and the ability to have dusty finishes on demand and less charisma. I like Maddox but he's just not good enough in the ring to be given 15 minutes. And chances are, because the FCW booking has been so fucking lazy, they'll face eachother again. God almighty.

Still, a very solid episode and I'd agree with the 8/10 rating.

Watching the 20/5 episode now. No reviews though. I want to just enjoy them. I'll start again next week. I'll give my thoughts as I have them though.

20/5/12

Ascension vs YGFFTT was fine. Ending made both look good and the possibility for another match

Raquel's been rebranded. Again, I like it. Her I am the greatest schtick was getting old and this change enables her to go up against divas not named Audrey Marie. Paige and Sofia Cortez continue to be fucking awesome when they interrupt her. Carry On ladies.

Rollins vs Langston was dull. Nothing more to say, other than praise Seth selling for more than 30 seconds. Unprecidented.

Antonio Cesaro cuts a standard heel promo.

Richie vs Maddox was just dull. It was interesting to see the inverse of their feud from last year (Richie contemptuously outwrestling Maddox last year, to now with Brad having Richie's number throughout). However it just never seemed to reach a gear above 1. Terrible finish as well.

Bo and Kassius are getting ten minutes oh fuck this is going to be ugly. Well there was the most fucking rediculous non-kickout to date. Oh Ohno, I will never be able to stop shitting on you. He kicked out (sort of) from a back slide? PROGRESS! Finish is Cesaro clocking Ohno with a man purse. Again, another dull match, which is excusable. Better than outright shit though.

27/5/10

Jason Jordan, CJ Parker and Mike Dalton vs Jiro, Alexander Rusev and Garret Dylan. JR lampshades the hell out of the heels as they enter the ring. Parker pinned Dylan. It didn't look good. Dalton was doing all the heavy lifting for the faces, which isn't surprising because the other two are so green they make grass look blue. Combine that with a subpar heel team and you've not got a good combination. Went about 5 ninutes too long too.

Kruger vs Aiden English. It was an effective squash. Kruger's offence looks nice and he made Aiden look like a complete scrub. Which he is, to be fair.

Ohno Promo. His best yet, by the low standards he's set.

Raquel Diaz vs Paige. Time for the divas to show the boys how it's done. Paige has awesome music. It's everything the average diva doesn't come out to, which is perfect for her character. All three girls (Sofia was at ringside supporting Paige) are fucking good. All three can go in the ring, all three can cut a passable promo, and all three play their characters to the hilt in and out of the ring. Finish is an Eddie special, Raquel pretends to get hit by a chair and gets the win. the fans are pissed as well

Oh my god, Briley Pierce is putting on a New Yawk Accent, and so's Colin Cassady. THIS IS AMAZING! They get a sly "she's a ****e" joke in for Summer Rae. Fucking amazing. Seriously, you need to see this segment. ALL OF YOU!

Bo vs Rollins. Not looking forward to this at all. Not bad. I was paying more attention to eating my dinner than the match, but it was far better than I expected. However, Seth's idea of making matches big is to devalue finishers until it's over. Which is just fucking lazy and poor working from both men. I could literally make a thread about comparing Rollins' title run to other guys' in terms of story and match structure.

I'm also in love of the NEW YAWKERS. I would literally pay to see them shit all over Bray Wyatt week in week out.

Do you see what I mean about Seth's title matches though? He's had the title for 5 tapings and in seemingly every one there's been a point in the match where both guys trade finishers. to the point where you know they're going to happen. Compare that to Gabriel, who held the title for (at this time) more than double the length of time that Rollins has. You know how many times his 450 splash didn't lead to a pin? Once, in the triple threat he dropped the title in. You know how many times in his entire FCW career? Once. In Riley's title defence against him to put him over big time. Hell the only finisher I remember him kicking out of was Tarver's lightning in the match Barrett intervened in.

In one match Rollins kicked out of a finisher (Bo's spear), had his curbstomp dodged, countered and kicked out of, his phoenix splash dodged, and his Avada Kadavra superkick kicked out of. 18 minutes he devalued more finishers than Gabriel did in 18 months.

There's a lot more I hate about Rollins than his match formula. That's more down to the fact that I haven't watched a match of his in a whole and that was his match with Ohno which was just ok due to the fact that Ohno looked good.

He does a lot of awful things such as how he swings the title belt like a twat, looks like a complete tool with his hair, has NO charisma, psychology or selling ability and is a large dick on twitter(I've never seen anyone more stuck up his own ass). The faster he loses the belt the better.

I've warmed up to Leo Kruger a lot more too.

The Ascension - Graves/Carter was far too short for my liking. That being said Conor O'Brian has done a complete 180 in my eyes.

On another forum I know a guy who does some odd work for FCW and their tapings so I knew about the New York gimmick well in advance.

You're telling me things I realised months ago.

I've warmed up to Leo Kruger a lot more too.

It's amazing what happens when he's not in a crappily booked title reign. I'm willing to bet that his recent matches with Rollins involved fewer kickouts from finishers than Bo's did.

Yes it was. They should have cut the Rollins/Langston match.

I've become a biiiiig Cassady fan.

I haven't looked through every post in this thread, so forgive me if this has already been asked.

Is there a website where I can watch FCW tapings without having to illegally download them?

Thanks in advance.

I have time and there's new FCW stuff on line. LET'S DO IT!

Antonio's sitting at the desk with Regal and Saxton, the commentary's either going to be great or awful. Let's see which. Also, Rollins faces steamboat because there aren't any high level heels he didn't beat earlier in his reign. The two have decent chemistry, but It'll probably be more of the same from Rollins in terms of number of finishers hit to end the match.

Jordan's out first. Whoopee. I think that's new music. Not sure though. Kruger's theme's got a bit of a remix, the opening is a bit faster and there's some new sound effects in there. Pretty nice. He's got a new sash (with rhinestones in it, not just leopard skin) and is "the self proclaimed king of Africa". I can dig this stuff. Jordan's probably going to look better than he has any right to look now.

Jason Jordan vs Leo Kruger

We open slow, with Kruger effortlessly taking down Jordan before backing up to the ropes to piss him off. Lockup, and Kruger takes a trifecta of belly to back suplexes before hugging the bottom rope to get Jordan away and heads to the outside. Back to the inside Kruger doesn't lock up, instead laying blows on Jordan, because he's smart like that. Jordan's able to fight back with an irish whip and a back body drop. Kruger retreats again. Jordan joins him and after a jog around the ring, and both getting back in, Kruger gets clotheslined to the outside as we head to a break.

Kruger's taken control, and seems to be going after the neck of his opponent. Jordan tries to get back on top but is cut off by Kruger, who does a little taunt (getting a few claps) before taking him to the corner. Kruger hits a European South African uppercut before taking Jordan down and hooking on a headscissors. Jordan tries to escape, but gets his head smashed into the mat repeatedly. Back to the corner and it's time for more strikes on the black guy (Kruger even stopping to say One more, which garners a somewhat positive reaction) Kuger repeats himself with the snapmere and headscissors, but Jordan transitions to an electric chair drop (using the ropes to help himself get up) showing off his power. Jordan's got his second wind and starts his comeback, cuminating in an atomic drop followed by running blockbuster. It gets two. Jordan leaves Leo alone for a moment, allowing him to get his head in the game and roll him up with a haldful of tights. the ref spots it and tells him he's a bad man, stopping the count. Kruger complains, letting himself get rolled up, but with no cheating he kicks out at two. Final Destination from Kruger gets two, and Kruger looks and points angrily at the ref (nicely done there, Leo), Sleeper's reversed into a rollup which gets two and Kruger begs Jordan to back off he advances, but gets his neck sent into the middle rope, allowing Leo to hit a cool as hell facebuster to end Jordan. I think they called it Kruger-ed. Doesn't matter, it's unique, it looks devastating and it's being sold as a deathblow the name's not important. **1/2 There's nothing majorly wrong with this match. It wasn't terrible, but it was quite dull at times, but I enjoyed watching it.

Badass Ambrose promo... Damnit, Seth's come out. NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR YOU TALK, YOU FUCKTARD! Tells Ambrose to grow a set. He leaves to new music.

Maxine still has an office, apparently. Summer tells Audrey to go have a title shot. Sofia and Paige (ya know, the talent of the Diva division) take umbridge with that. Therefore Sofia (picked by ip dip doo by Summer) gets a number 1 contender's match, Paige says she's "always hurt" and gets the shot instead. Sofia is pissed and gets gragged off. No more anti-diva alliance soon :(. But they'll be wrestling eachother. This is an acceptable solution.

Jobber-san vs Bray Wyatt

Jiro the Jobber has new music, but no Eli. Bray doesn't, and he comes out talking. This man is awesome. Just watch the damn promo. Total squash with Bray's signature character work. Just fucking watch it.

Christ, Ohno promo. Calls Cesaro a coward. When Kassius clashes it's ashes to ashes. Less shit than saying Ohno.

Richie's got new music, it's better than his old stuff, but still too slow paced. Rollins had new music too, it's 'aite. Apparently starjumps counts as a "rockstar like entrance" if Saxton is to be believed. Oh and he swings the title around his head. Because he's a tit. Oldschool intro, let's get it on

Let's spice things up, every time Richie does an armdrag, there's a stupid sequence, or either competitor hits, attempts or kicks out of a finisher take a drink.

Florida Heavyweight Championship Richie Steamboat vs Seth Rollins (c)

We start slow, locking up until Richie hits an armdrag (drink). Another lockup, Rollins goes behind and takes down Richie and locks in a waistlock. Steamboat escapes, leading to more grappling, eventually reaching a stalemate. Richie gets a wristlock and hits his springboard armdrag (drink), Rollins gets up and eats another armdrag (drink) which gets secured with an armbar. Cesaro talks about how annoying those armdrags are. Brief wristlock exchange, after which Richie goes for an armdrag which Seth avoids by moving his arm away. Rollup by Rollins is kicked out. Headlock by Rollins is eventually fought out, leading to a silly sequence (drink) culminating in a chop to the chest by Steamboat. Failed pin leaves Steamboat to start attacking the arm as is his custom. Richie gets the better of a chop exchange, but gets hit with a one legged dropkick. Rollins picks up the pace, dropping Richie with his complete shot into the middle turnbuckle and clotheslining him to the outside so he can his a suicide dive, cue the adbreak.

We come back to Richie in a headscissors. He bridges into a pinning position on Rollins, who releases the hold. We get told Ambrose is getting a shot at the winner in two weeks. Fuck, not that shit again. Seth's still in charge, Richie gets scoop slammed for a nearfall, back to the headscissors. Richie gets to the ropes. Blows to the chest of Steamboat leads to a missed moonsault. This gives Richie the chance to start his comeback, hitting some nice looking strikes. Richie hits a modified Jackhammer (drink), Rollins kicks out (drink), Richie goes high risk but eats a dropkick to the midsection. He gets up and gets a superkick reversed (drink) into Rollins' Avada Kadavra (drink) but he kicks out (drink). Rollins sets up the curbstomp, but it's countered (drink) into a snap powerslam before he can hit it. The two brawl on adjacent ring aprons, and then while climbing up the corner (drink) Steamboat gets tossed down so Rollins can set up a phoenix splash, but get german'd off the top before can hit it (drink). However he lands on his feet, so Richie's the one who actually got hurt from the move (drink). However he's not going to sell bumps off the top rope (drink) so we get a pinfall exchange instead (drink), including the ref stopping the count inches before the mat when Richie was a split second too slow with his kickout (drink). Curbstomp (drink) gets the threecount. Now call an ambulance if you've been drinking something harder than shandy, because you might have done some liver damage, especially with that end stretch. *** Fast paced, at least but still utterly rediculous ending. I cannot wait for Rollins to flop on the big time so I can stop watching him.

Curt's 27 and at the last PPV he was working for Ace, Kruger's nearly 33 with a history of a bad neck. Yeah I think Curt's fairly safe. Either way I'm not gonna get into this in an FCW thread.

Compare DH Smith's career trajectory with Hawkins' and consider reassessing his safety.

But anyway, what did you think of the episode?

It was a very mixed bag.

- "The self proclaimed King of Africa" is weird as a nickname for Kruger. I constantly forget he's from South Africa.

- The neckbreaker finisher was pretty cool though as a variant. Whereas Curt drags the face down, Leo smashed it which looked much more impressive. That's how i see it anyhow.

- I want Jason Jordan to die.

- Ambroses promo was what you would expect from him - amazing and better than 70% of the roster.

- Go away Seth Rollins. Stop ruining anything at all positive about FCW. Go jump in front of a truck and no sell that.

- I can't tell you how happy I am that Bray Wyatt is not just singing the same song over and over. His songs have proper points to him and I feel to him the same way that Manson's family saw him. Danzig is always a good song choice regardless.

- Jiro is....um.... yes.

- Ohno's Dr. Seuss style promo's are fun but i preferred last weeks ones.

- The main event sucked. I seriously hated it and saw some moments come before they fucking occurred. I can' understand how you can give it three stars. Richie Steamboat is just complete and utter stagnant shit. He bores me to death. Put him on the main roster before he starts reminding me of Seth Rollins.

Overall probably a C.

I got more enjoyment out of the match than I did out of Kruger vs Jordan, partly because of the drinking game. That's the only reason I like Kruger, but that match would have been better if it had been given half the time, Jordan should not be wrestling for 10 minutes at this stage. And yeah, it was exactly what I expected of it. Richie works the arm, Seth runs around like a tit, substituting speed for rhyme and reason. I find Seth a lot more enjoyable when I don't pay much attention to him.

And Richie will never be like Seth. He's spent far too long working the arm of every opponent he's ever faced to do anything else. He generally does things that makes sense too.
