Welcome to My (And Not Sly's) House
I'm watching a Smackdown from 2003 and the differences between him now and then are astounding. In 2003 he's talking about having similar injuries to a returning wrestler, he's analyzing matches and calling out tiny intricacies in moves that make them different or work on a specific area. It's almost like he's....an analyst. How did he go from caveman to killing machine to decent analyst to Pigeon Man?

A general shift in announcing style for major television companies, decreasing the importance of in ring action over storytelling.

well, its clear he doesnt give a shit about tna. i remember mike tenay used to argue with him at first for doing his job so badly, but has given up now.

btw, no contradiction here, i like tenay and actually feel he is a little underrated.

When the amount of guidance a stupid person receives decreases, so does the quality of his performance. Fact.

This sums it up in a nutshell. Complain about it as much as you like, but with Vince and others in his ear, giving him constant input and direction, he was tolerable. When left to his own devices in TNA, his inadequacies come to the surface, and he's subpar. End of story.
