Danielson's firing was not a work. He broke the rules and Vince and co. had to be seen to be punishing those infringements.
I mean what would have been the point of a worked firing anyway? He was already getting over with the crowd through his feud with Cole and Miz so he did not need a big return. Why have him join Nexus at all if the long term plan was to have him as a face?
No, Danielson was legitimately fired but WWE were more than happy to retain good relations in order to bring him back. I fully believe that the plan was to wait the full 90 days but because HHH got hurt again WWE needed to bring him back earlier to add something extra to SS
