Ska

Does anyone here listen to ska music?

For those who don't know what it is, Ska is like a subgenre of Reggae. Like Reggae, Ska invloves horns, such as trumpets and trombones. It is also known for its upbeat guitars and fast tempo (most of the time). It's not that popular, but I find it very enjoyable to listen to. It's even more fun to see in person, because you can skank to it (Sample below).

So what are your feelings on ska? If ska is nothing new to you, what are some of your favorite ska bands? If this is your first time hearing it, what do you think?

Yes.

Although my listening of Ska is a bit skewed as most of the Ska I listen to is a blend with another genre e.g. Rock or Punk so I can't really tell if something is definitivly Ska or not e.g. The Clash and The Police experimented with Ska quite a bit and I love their fusions.

If I had to pick my favourite definitve Ska band I'd have to go with Sublime, Bradley Nowell just wrote some amazing music that went so well with the lyrics.

I've also been getting into No Doubt recently. After realising Gwen Stefani was in a band and prefering the band music to her solo stuff I decided to check them out and liked them.

Badfinger's "Superman" is one of my favorite songs of all time. It's fresh, positive, and is awesome riding music if you're on a bike, skateboard, etc.

Ska is definitely a very underlooked form of music that has been hitting it big in the Skatepunk generation. It's wicked cool in my opinion and should be heard on the radio more often.

"This Is Your Brain On Ska" is another really awesome song that puts a smile on my face.

(videos couldn't load here, so I don't know if anyone has already uploaded any song I mentioned. I'm sorry if it looks like I'm a copycat.)

I love you even more TPP.

Ska is one of my favorite genres and has my favorite band of all time in it, Sublime. I love that band so much that I listen to their cover band Badfish anytime I can.

I was introduced to Sublime back when I was in elementary school and never stopped listening to it. It is an overlooked genre because the poster band Sublime isn't active with all the original members, for obvious reasons. If it wasn't for Bradley's death I'm sure that Ska music would be much more prevelant than it is today, yet it still has a decent following at least around my group of friends. I'm yet to met someone that hates the music so that really says something about it.

RIP Bradley

Prefer the 2nd wave bands, the rocksteady sound and most of the early 3rd wave stuff that was infused with punk. By the mid/late nineties I pretty much dropped out of the scene and stopped caring. I played a show once as a backer on the alto sax or guitar as needed. Not my favorite genre but as a musician I was almost required to hear it for the instrumentation. Over the years I feel it just got weaker and weaker, or my tastes got harder. Either way probably haven't listen to much of it since 2000-'01.
First band that got me into it(via my friend's uncle) was:

Which led to this:

Then as I got more into punk it was all about:

By the time it got to this:

I was out.

you should listen to The Ordinary Boys 2nd album "Brassbound". That has a big strong Ska vibe to it.

Their 1st and 3rd albums do not, but Brassbound is definately something you should try if u like Ska-ish sorta music. You can probably get the cd off amazon for a couple of quid

I love Ska music. But as for all the ska music that is out there, Spanish/English Ska Is my favorite. They Have a huge following. I do love Sublime And all the other rock mixed ska out there but traditional ska is more like it for me.

Here is one of the bands I love called Red Store Bums.

Well with Ska it is a great relaxing music, I don't really care whether it is first wave, second wave or third wave as they all go on the fact that the guitar is generally played on the off beat.

There is songs like this one from the Clash that is one of the most played songs on my iPod.

Then there is great music like this, from Bad Manners with Buster Bloodvessel, you can't help but want to start Skanking.

Then you can have the awesomeness that is the Aquabats.

And the covers that occur of other songs by Ska bands are generally awesome, like Reel Big Fish and others.
