Should Wrestlers be able to change an outcome of a match, during the match?

What I mean is, is that at some point you've seen a match where something happens, and the crowd reacts way different than you've ever expected. One example would be Jericho vs Legends. The match started bad, and it was predicted by everyone to be bad. But then Steamboat put on a great performance, and the crowd ate it up. They were into it, way more than was expected, and so were the viewers at home. But Ricky lost, and then the aftermath was ehhhh. But what if Jericho made a decision during the match and said, "this is going better than expected, lets do this instead" and Ricky wins. The fans are satisfied and its a happy ending.



Basically, what matches have you seen, that you were so into, maybe more than you thought, because you knew who was going to win, or just disappointed with the winner. But having the other guy win would have been so much better because of how well or better everything went? Do you allow them to change the outcome if they feel its whats best? As long as both wrestlers agree?

I would say yes, but only for non title, or non world title matches. And it should be certain veterans like Jericho to make those decisions. Just regular matches or fueds. You should listen to the fans. If the changing the outcome/winner, wont drastically change future plans, just give us what we want in the heat of the moment.

This maybe a stupid idea, so don't bash too much, but I think if under strict circumstances or special occasions where maybe Vinnie says hey, just go with it, I think it would be cool. Maybe some of those matches where you know someones gonna win, get more interesting.

Being in professional wrestling independently out of allentown pa lehigh valley wrestling, I will let you know in a bunch of our matches we change alot, I wrestled for the LVW title belt in my game i was supose to lose my title and get thrown through a table, at some point my opponiet went to throw me into the table and i did a hurricana rahna throwing him into the table he was supose to kick out but he didn't, leaving me the champion still, later in the month we kept a feud going on and it led to a ladder match in which was my last match ever..but yes it does change..

I would say that the only time a planned finish should be changed is one of the worker's is seriously injured. For example, when Owen Hart broke Steve Austin's neck.

But, no, finishes should not be changed just because the crowd unexpectantly pops.

Not really, because the ramifications go beyond just one match in most cases. In certain matches, if storyline flexibility allows for it or there's nothing behind the match, then that's something you can look into. Most of the time though the winner is carefully planned out, whether it turns out to be the right decision or not, so I would doubt/wouldn't really want, a main event (at least main event pushed) match to waiver just upon the crowd's reaction.

I'm not sure how much goes into the actual ring work as far as this subject is concerned, but I think that would be more important. I.E. "This match isn't drawing a huge reaction, we need a string of big spots we didn't plan for/ let's get some good counters going, etc etc"

no they shouldnt have a choice to change finishes. first of all, it's not their call. if that were the case, certain wrestlers would be changing outcomes to fit their agendas. it would be total chaos. it's better going into the match already knowing what said outcome is going to be.

I think that in independent promotions the wrestlers could do that, but in WWE, it's just too big, and things are planned too far ahead. Plus, there's the worry that wrestlers will do it to suit themselves.
If a match doesn't have something huge behind it (title, major storyline thing), they should be able to do it, but only in small promotions.

I got an email asking why i left wrestling. Simply because i was starting a family and getting married. I know alot of wrestlers said i was dumb but i never retired the ladder match was my last match, i may decide to come back as i am a fan favorite, I am hoping to go to florida and try out for tna..we wil have to see.

Changing the outcome of a match could be a huge failure for all persons involved, of course the outcome could be a great one but the matches are ending the way they do because they were planned before the event if they just change the outcome the crowd could be more than disappointed and to say : " let´s just give it a shot " is not what is needed in such a businnes if you like surprising endings just watch Lost instead nobody can figure that stuff out xD

I think changing an outcome of a match should be permissable as the match is going on, yes. However, that is obviously up to the discretion of the booker, and not the "wrestlers" as it suggests in the thread title.

For example, if I was Vince, and I saw what was transpiring in Canada for Mania X-8 during the Hulk Hogan vs Rock match, based on the crowd's unbelievable reaction to Hogan before and during the entire match, I would have changed the match and given the victory to Hogan. And that would have blown the roof off the place.

i agree that if a wrestler is injured the finish can be changed.
I recently watched WCW Sin, which is where Sid broke his leg in one of the most grotesque ways ever. After it happens, he is in the ring for another 3- 5 minutes without medical attention and Scott Steiner and Animal are elbow dropping him.

I dont think anyone would have gotten upset if Scotty just pinned him so the match could be over. Sids leg was fuckin right angled.


But under ordinary circumstances the wrestlers should not have the power to change finishes. It would lead to bad blood between the talent and would just open pandoras box for injuries from guys not trusting each other completely.
