Sam's Thread of Chattin' w/ Jake & Other Robust Subjects

I only read three. Anyway, you'll probably get even more of the videogame references than I did. In fact, a couple in particular will probably make you - and only you - jump out of your seat.

yeah that's what I've been told.

And I'm going to set it to "We Are Sex Bob-Omb" so you're, like, really angry the entire time.

I'm still struggling where to rate that film. It's better than Inception, but I can't in good conscience give it five stars. It's as good as Shaun of the Dead, but is Shaun a five star film?

Yeah, but it'd have to be a long list. On a /10 scale even, I'd be hard pressed to award Pilgrim the 9 necessary to imply it's better than any Christopher Nolan offering - though it's true. Perhaps Xfear was onto something with his absurd, tiny fraction system. No. No, I'm just tired.

The Edgar Wright Scale is as follows:
  1. Shaun of the Dead = Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
  2. Obscure shit I've never seen
  3. Hot Fuzz

Shaun of The Dead was an awesome film, but not 5 stars. And inception, while it may not be as humorous or to some people entertaining is a more quality film.

Eh, it has a concept that differentiates itself from The Matrix enough to be considered clever, two or three clever action scenes, it looks nice, has a decent ending and, well, that's enough to be considered four stars in my book.

The first entire half of the film is dreary exposition, the script is uninteresting, the characters recycled archetypes, one of the protagonists is unintentionally infuriating, the acting passable and the concept confused and inconsistent (despite being clever).

Scott Pilgrim, on the other hand, is like Speed Racer done right. That's not fair, really, because Speed Racer was just a shitty Lazytown adaptation, but its bright colours made Blu-ray collectors climb up their own arses and set up camp. It's like Kick-Ass done right. That's not fair either, because SP was an adaptation of a much better book and didn't have a "superheroes in real life" premise that it unceremoniously and inexplicably dumped halfway through - a la Hancock. It's like Kick-Ass meets Speed Racer, if either of those films were good, meets Shaun of the Dead.

Pilgrim was a brilliantly eclectic, soon-to-be-cult film. Its action-scenes-as-videogames idea was original, expertly executed and, fortunately, the film didn't gather enough popularity for it to be repeated ad nausuem. Its humour was very good but - like the film overall - was also very eclectic. Cera's casting was good but there were likely better choices who weren't box office draws. The casting of every other character was bang on and, to momentarily contrast with Inception, were just as two-dimensional. However, in this case, that was intentional for humour and they weren't all tired archetypes.

In short, unlike most mainstream films, it has the balls to put itself out there. As Elbert Hubbart said - and Christopher Nolan took onboard - "To avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, be nothing."

See I dont like Cera, at all, thats probably what soured the movie for me. I did find some parts amusing, and understood everything that was going on. I never read it as it didnt seem like something that appealed to me, but it probably was accurate in terms of the material its based on.

That being said I simply wasnt a fan of the film, its eclecticism may have made added to that, but I wasnt a fan of the actors involved and I felt the direction was very poor, not to mention the constant hue of the picture.

Storywise I thought it was stupid. Some kid has to beat a girls evil exes to win her heart. Now I understand the videogame theme but I feel it really just doesnt transfer over to film well. I didnt care for any of the characters as well, I found them all very unappealing. I dont know if this is done on purpose, but I hated Scott. I thought he was annoying. I didnt care for Ramona either and the Asian girl was incredibly annoying, which while its probably meant to be humorous, was a turn off to the film for me.

I feel from just a plain movie basis without seeing the material its based off of it was poor, but it might have been spot on in terms of the source material. Perhaps if it was directed differently and I actually read the comics I would find it appealing, but in the mean time, I dont.

Shaun of The Dead for me was different. I love zombie themed films and the added humor was great. I enjoy all of Simon Pegg's films and find him great. Plus I thought the overall story and the characters were interesting and I enjoyed all of their interactions.

Basically everything in contrast to SP with the exception of I enjoy video games and liked the videogame music in the film. But even that to me felt tacked on.

I thought it was terrible, and I thank god I didnt pay to see it in theaters.

Cunt.

Sam, if there is a party tonight, you can expect me to come storming in here - as well as one can "storm" in text - yelling (italicizing?) "GUESS WHO'S DRUNK??"

That was a bit uncalled for...:icon_neutral:

I think I've made it very clear how I feel about you watching the movie for free after I implored people to see it, because it needed all the help it could get. You banging on about it in every single thread where anyone mentions the film is more uncalled-for than my comment.

He's got a point. People that download films illegally have their own circle of hell. And by hell, I mean prison. Under my totalitarian regime. Circular prisons for all!

Aaaanyway, I'm really glad you seemed to like the film as much as I did.

Unfortunately, this is the only place I can talk about it, because the iMBD boards have been overrun with trolls. It's annoying.

I dont find it uncalled for, Im sharing my beliefs about the film. You jizz over it in every thread youre in so I feel I can tell people I though it was shit. Seems only fair.

And your argument for me to go see the film because it had a shit box office draw is asinine. Im happy I watched it online and didnt pay for it, I would have been pissed if I had payed for it.

Also that seemed a bit harsh. So in either case no hard feelings.

Hey Fury, anything you say counts as shit. Seeing as you're related to the founder of Subway, beat the shit out of 12 black kids, regularly called teachers bitches, drink gallons of water a day, and have no body fat.... All lies. I'm done now. I gotta defend Doc.

I would rather say that anything you say how no merit, seeing as you refuse to believe simple stories that arent as remarkable as you make them out to be.

So why dont you go do something productive and stop with your idiotic and baseless insinuations that I lie.

Number one, you created a fake story about your Uncle. Number two, your stories change all the time. I got PMed by multiple people also pointing this out.
