Sam's Thread of Chattin' w/ Jake & Other Robust Subjects

Is there any buzz about The Big Short out there? It's a distinctly American movie in both content and ethos (am I using that word right?), so I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't generate much interest outside the country.

I'm about to be Edgy:

I didn't like Silver Linings Playbook all that much either.

I liked it, not sure it was worth the Academy Awards it generated, but I thought it was a very good, if a bit silly film.

Wait, hold up, you guys already have Creed AND Hateful Eight? Don't tell me - you already saw The Revenant in August.

No, but I'm pretty sure it's out somewhere around here. Maybe I'll see it next weekend.

I just looked up the synopsis of The Big Short on Wikipedia so, to answer your question, no, there's not much buzz.

Sight & Sound gave their film of the year to The Assassin, a film not even out in the UK until January, so I'll probably give that a watch.

But I am a massive libertarian. I do hope this movie of yours doesn't challenge my views.

Well then you and IC25 share more in common than your beefy arms.

I mean, it really makes you think what these fuckers would be doing if there were no regulations at all considering they crashed the world economy when they ARE regulated.

I've a friend who's a libertarian, morbidly obese, misogynistic and a homophobe. He's a good guy besides.

Right, well, I might be able to grab a viewing of Bridge of Spies and Carol each to drag myself over the thirty movie mark for the year. No work and the lady's preoccupied with family - it's now or never.

I went to get on the train into town but it was packed by ***** doing their shopping. No, ta. Maybe I'll see Carol in the next few days. Bridge of Spies is one I've decided against - a modern Spielberg movie over two hours long isn't something to relish. The Peanuts Movie could be back in contention but I doubt I'll be arsed.

I believe The Peanuts Movie set at Christmas. So it's tomorrow or never for me. Hopefully the latter.

What an uninspiring year in film.

I saw ten more films last year, Jake saw about sixty more - maybe we just didn't watch enough. I know because I just went back a year and found myself defending Alien versus Predator. Prometheus must have still been fresh in my mind.

It's been a blockbuster year, so you can see Star Wars on five screens, but the smaller films are barely registering at the multiplex. Got to see some good shit like Pride, Kajaki and The Guest last year. This year Ex_Machina is a small film.

Sicario: for when you want to get Zero Dark Thirty out from Blockbuster but all their copies have been rented out.

Carol is like watching paint dry but it's beautiful. It's like watching the Mona Lisa dry.

I fucking love Zero Dark Thirty. I was gonna see Sicario, but never got around to it. 3 stars is a pretty generous rating for a Zero Dark Thirty downgrade.

You really liked that movie that much? I didn't get it. I mean it was fine, but I didn't understand all the crazy praise and hype.

I obtained Sicario last night. Excited to check it out soon.

It even makes the claim that torture is an effective way of collecting information. It's uncanny.

There's nothing as cool as the house raid in Zero Dark Thirty but there's some pretty tense sequences.

I think I liked it more after I saw it the first time because I understood that everything in the movie was building up to this awesome house raid scene that is incredibly tense and exciting.

So I've officially decided, halfway through my 3rd (or 4th not sure) rewatch of the Peep Show series that this might just be the best comedy television show ever created. In fact, I think I'm certain of it. Wanted to watch the last series that came out a month or two ago but decided I had to rewatch the whole show first. And I'm loving it yet again as always.

Christ I love this show. So very much. Are there any other British comedies similar at all?

Not really - even in Britain, Peep Show's a pretty unique thing. It's enough of a cult show that nobody really has an incentive to imitate it. I'd recommend The Thick of It but you already have an American version in Veep.

Peep Show might make my top five (behind The Simpsons, The IT Crowd, It's Always Sunny, and Rick and Morty).

Garth Marenghi's Dark Place is quite a unique show although it's totally different from Peep Show.

I don't think it airs down here but my parents had recorded a show called Scot Squad that features Grado as a traffic cop. Pretty funny and worth a watch if you chance upon it.

Watched Foxcatcher last night after watching Click. Need a double-bill of happy films tonight I reckon.

Edit - Scot Squad is on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIv7fgTO2gWIVLYtbthwL-A

Four Lions shares some of the writers - and is a film and is hilarious - as does Fresh Meat - and is a television show and is unbearable.

I keep trying to find similar shows but you're right honestly, it's too unique. It just perfectly captures the darkness, sarcasm, and wit of my sense of humor and nothing has ever made me laugh as hard. I decided to give The IT Crowd a shot after finishing all of Peep Show again, and I'm on series 3 at the moment. First series....eh I wasn't that keen on it. I thought it got a lot better by series 2. I already knew Richard Ayoade and Chris O'Dowd from various projects and they're easily the best part of the show, particularly Ayoade (I thought O'Dowd was actually a bit terrible for a lot of the first series, overacting and mugging the camera way too much those first first episodes). In fact I kind of cringed when I heard the laugh track in the pilot because I guess most British shows I've seen lack that bit of fakeness. I really hate laugh tracks in this day and age. Show has progressively gotten better as I've gone on now. And Matt Berry is great too.

I'm thinking I'll try Black Books next. Sounds like it might have the kind of dry dark humor I'm seeking. Well after I check out Mitchell and Webb's sketch show.

Unbearable eh? Was gonna check that one out but maybe not. Four Lions and Magicians are in my queue, though I realize Magicians didn't get very great reviews.

That has a bunch of the guys from IT Crowd doesn't it?

Any of you fellas seen The Mighty Boosh?

X-

Dark Place is good and it has a cheesy horror theme to it, so that is a plus. Matt Berry is a gem once again.

Boosh is a good time & if you like that check out the more random feel of Luxury Comedy from Noel. Some funny shit in there.
