Sampling

Tim

...
Yeah I admit i'm not the biggest hip hop fan, but sometimes I decide to go searching for some hip hop, whether it be underground or mainstream. You find there's a bit of sampling in these songs, some are horrible, some are awesome! So which is your favourite sample used in a song?

Mine is one that was released not too long ago, Opposite of Adults by Chiddy Bang samples Kids by MGMT. First off i'm loving the wordplay in the song title. :p The song shows a great use of sampling, not fully copying the main synth, but stripping it back a bit to it's basics and it works really well in the song. A creative use of sampling and one that's used to actually make a song sound great while not just using it because they can. :D

Not exactly rap/hip-hop but it's my favorite sample, I'm going to go with "Lord Only Knows" by Beck. It sampled a song by Mike Millius called "Look Out For Lucy" Don't really know the original but this was always my favorite song from "Odelay".

The classic Mister Mister song "Broken Wings" was used by 2Pac in his song "Until The End Of Time". That was pretty awesome! I like how the lyrics have slightly changed too

Another cool sample is "Sing For The Moment" by Eminem which samples the Aerosmith song "Dream On". This is probably my favourite Em song, I think the guitaring at the end is awesome.

Kingdome Come by Jay-Z:

The sample is from Super Freak by Rick James:

This one gets my vote. I have picked Kingdom Come by Jay-Z (first video). It samples Super Freak by Rick James (second video). It's my favorite one of my favorite samples used because it has a great beat and takes a song that has already been sampled in a famous song (MC Hammer's Can't Touch This) where here they do an even better job of the sampling so it's harder to tell what song the sample came from.

How about Ice Cube's greatest song "Today was a good day". He sampled a very famous song by the Isley Brothers called "Foot Steps in the Dark". The song was a very slow moving song and Ice Cube turned it into one of the greatest sample songs not only of 1992, but possibly the decade. Ice Cube sped up the beat and music a bit to a tempo that it wouldn't be considered a slow song.

Now here's Cube.

Now its time for the best rap sampling in the history of rap sampling. Anyone know where I'm getting at. You know Michael McDonald's song "I Keep Forgettin' (Everytime you're near)".

Who would've thunk it, that this beat would be sampled and made into one of the best rap songs of all time. "Regulate" by Warren G and Nate Dogg. Warren didn't add any kind of weird effect to the beat, he didn't speed it up and try to make it all gangster. Instead, he got one of the best voices in Rap (Nate Dogg) to accompany him in the song. It was a smooth but somehow hard song. Great sampling here.

Also, I can't leave out Eminem's "No Love" over "What Is Love" by Haddaway, and the original rap sample, "Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer over Rick James' "Super Freak". Both great songs.
