Round 3

doctor-vs-nick-fury_zps20d66647.png

The Doctor enters this round after managing to defeat Van Helsing, while Nick Fury took down the ruthless Punisher. Both men are intelligent and long-lived, but only one of them can walk out of this the winner.

FIGHT!

Nick Fury seems like a tough customer from my limited knowledge of him, and from his bio. This is certainly a tough test for the Doctor. But even though Fury has (what, say 90 years?) fighting experience, the Doctor has ten times that.

The last remaining Time lord is over 900 years old, fought against every type of enemy imaginable. Robots, Mutants, Cyborgs, Priests, Vampires, Blobs, Living Plastic, Werewolves, Fish-People, Lizard-People and many many more have fallen to the superior intellect and strategy of the Doctor.

People have argued that the Doctor doesn't kill... well, they're wrong. He has killed in almost every episode of the new season, and when he didn't it was because his female companion begged him not too.. I'm not saying the Doctor would just whip out a Preacher MKII energy gun and have a mexican standoff with Fury because he'd likely at least be forced to regenerate (unless of course he uses his severed hand to channel the regeneration energy and stop the process, keeping the same form and avoiding incapacitation.)

But what if the Doctor uses his infinite knowledge of creation, his ability to see everything there ever was or ever will be, to stagger his steps, avoid a few (likely very well-aimed) bullets from Fury, use the vortex manipulator he happens to have lying around to jump one second back in time, choosing to land right behind Fury? Fury would watch the Doctor disappear just in time to get an energy beam in the back of the head, or The Doc could drop a small amount of unstable material, vortex manipulator away, detonate with the Sonic Lance?

Nick Fury is no joke but I think the Doctor, the man who trapped two entire species in a "time bubble" (For lack of a better term) to win the war for the whole of creation, can get the job done if anyone can.

Vote for the man who's people created black holes. Vote for the man who always overcomes the odds. This isn't a 60 minute episode of Dr. Who where he bumbles about fretting over some female. This is a war, and The Doctor fucking wins wars.

Mods, delete this post if I'm not allowed to double-post.. how is Fury winning by 5 votes when no one will even take the time to talk about him?

Dr Who might have the capability of being a bad ass, Nick Fury IS a bad-ass 24/7/365. He has been involved in every conflict for the last 75+ years, has battled terrorists, supers & aliens and can still vanish off the face of the planet today even in this technological age. He is also as heavily armed and as proficient as the Punisher when he heads into battle. Personally, I feel he takes the edge over a guy who has only really been bad-ass since Jason Bourne appeared on screen... and if Fury had been assigned to take Bourne out, there wouldn't have been any sequels!

An interesting battle once more for Nick Fury. I think we can throw out minds, strength and everything else that these two men have to offer and boil it down to one simple fact; Nick Fury is a quicker draw than the Doctor. In the most recent episode of Doctor Who, the Doctor admitted he wasn't as quick a draw as an 18 year old who hadn't even fired a gun before. Nick Fury? He's fired practically every gun known to man, and he's hardly the slowest man on the planet. With heightened abilities as well, Fury should pull his gun quicker than the Doctor can pull his Sonic Screwdriver and as a result, the Doctor is riddled with bullets and Nick Fury moves onto the next round.

I'm supporting The Doctor, but I want him to win fairly, so I feel obliged to point out a few inaccuricies stated:

1) He is no longer in possession of the severed hand. The 10th doctor avoided regenerating by putting the energy into it, but this later became 'The Human Doctor' which stayed with Rose in the other dimension Earth.

2) The Doctor does not have the ability to 'see everything there ever was or will be'. Yes, the timelord is a complete genius who travels round in time, but he doesn't know everything thats going to happen. The Doctor isn't going to be dodging bullets because he usually avoids the situation where he has to.

3) If I remember correctly, the Vortex Manipulator was the watch that Captain Jack Harkness owned. The Doctor did have that for a while, but I think he gave it back to Jack or River at some point (but if he still has it then he should be able to use it - I just think he doesn't)

4) Funkay pointed out The Doctor admitting he would be a slower draw than the young lad in the latest episode. Rule 1 - The Doctor Lies. Whilst it could be the truth, it's the doctor's style to make the lad not want to shoot by making him think about what it means. The Doctor is an expert at talking himself out of dangerous situations

1) You're actually right about the hand, I'd forgotton the episode with the Human Doctor.

2) In Episode 13 of the first new season (The Parting Of The Ways), with Chris Eccleston as the Doctor, Rose absorbs the time vortex into her head. At 39 minutes 40 seconds She states that she can see everything.. all that is, all that was, all that ever will be. The Doctor replies "That's what I see!" This is evidence that the Doctor can indeed see the whole of creation.

3) The Doctor has used the vortex manipulator as recently as the last episode of season 5. Admittedly I have yet to watch season 6, its downloading as we speak. But if the Doctor is in his prime, he'd have a vortex manipulator lying about.

4) Im glad to see someone else trying to support the Doctor.

There's a couple of problems with this theory, if I am indeed interpreting the limitations of a Time Lord correctly. And heaven knows that's one of the most complex, still not fully explained concepts in all of sci-fi and television. BUT, to my knowledge while a Time Lord may be able to see every event in time in every direction, they also cannot change events WITHIN their own time line. This is why all the companions, once experience time/space travel, can no longer change things within their own time line. They can go back to other points in time and mess with things, but they are never able to change their own lives. The only exception of this is when they threw the universe on its head and...

literally re-created the entirety of everything, by throwing the TARDIS into the center of the imploding Sun.

I know that implies a fatalistic concept, by which we're pretty much saying "if fate has it that Fury wins, Fury wins." But that's how the Dr. Who universe works. The Doctor's deaths are always "fixed points" in time, and fixed points also cannot be changed. They can be cleverly avoided...

like by using the alien robotic tech to take his form and pretend to be him, so that he never actually died in the first place. Meaning it wasn't actually a fixed point in time.

I don't understand how the Doctor is still in the tournament, except by popularity alone. If you actually go back and look at HOW he defeats his enemies, it's usually by fear and out-witting them using time/space travel and manipulation. Or by having other people do his work for him. He also cannot, and seems physically unable to resist showing off and explaining how he "single-handedly" accomplished everything. Name one single time when the Doctor just showed up, saved the day and didn't monologue for 10 minutes...

Fury wins, because the Doctor has nowhere to go. He can't get in the TARDIS. I don't know where you think he's getting all these gadgets he would just happen to have on his person. The only thing you know he has, without fail, is the sonic screwdriver. Which does nothing against a bullet to the brain.

Well I usually like to wait until a lot of the points have been made before getting involved, but seeing as so many people have voted for Fury already without a proper discussion about the fight, I'd thought I'd get start my supporting earlier.

One interesting thing from that davros episode with the hand, is the amount of time the doctor can last before regenerating. The Doctor gets shot by a dalek, which is usually instant death, but the doctor is able to make it back to the tardis first. People are saying Fury could shoot and it's over, but the doctor isn't going to 'die' straight away.

Sure, he's not going to die straight away. But as I've stressed in multiple threads throughout this tournament, death is not the only way to advance. Shoot him in the head, maybe he'll be able to crawl around or make it back to the Tardis, but you think he's capable of beating Fury? It's not a question of "how long can he last before he dies?" it's a matter of doing anything in a state of mortal peril. He's a Time Lord, with only so many available incarnations left in his long, long life. At his present state, conserving his life is going to be more important than maybe winning a round in the tournament.

Time Lords? Just add that to the long list of different types of opponents that Fury has beaten. You dont get to be in the position Fury has by running from problems. You get there by taking out targets by any means necessary.

Fury is a tactical genius and a weapons specialist. He has many ways to take down and counteract what the Doctor might have in store for him. Fury doesnt even have to kill him, just wound him or knock him out long enough to survive. The Doctor isnt as skilled in hand to hand as Fury and he may be tough, but Nick is tougher.

Now having beaten his fair share of different opponents, The Doctor has a few tricks up his sleeve. Question is, what will put Fury down for the count? What will Fury do to counteract his offense? The Doctor isnt going to be able to just hop in the TARDIS either. He will have to go for it from what I understand the rules to be. It wont be right next to him, he will have to run for it even if it is a short distance away. Do you think Fury will just let him?

Answer is nope. Fury and The Doctor have a stand-off, he goes for the TARDIS and Fury tosses a grenade at it, or puts a few bullets in him. Fury is much quicker on the draw and The Doctor is done. He is unknown to Fury and he is seen as a threat. Therefore he is a target and Fury takes him down without letting him get to anything seen as a potential weapon.

My vote goes to Nick fury for this one. Nick is all round a far better fighter even though the Doctor has more experience Fury knows far better techniques than him. The Doctor may also have more advanced weaponry however they aren't anywhere near as practical as a gun of some kind. Considering that Fury would have a very quick draw, he would easily be able to shoot the Doctor at the start before he is able to do something to attack Nick. Fury advances

In all honesty, it is fairly ridiculous that The Doctor is in a tournament such as this, as it doesn't really fit in with his character. However, we have to assume that every competitor is trying their hardest to win, so The Doctor will be doing everything he can to win.

You admit that The Doctor wont die straight away, so if he manages to reach the TARDIS he will win. The Doc can easily get a weapon from the TARDIS, or just travel somewhere to get one. The Doc is also prepared to kill those who he thinks deserve it, so I doubt he's going to have much sympathy for someone who's shooting at him.

Concerning The Doctor trying to preserve his life, he is well prepared to sacrifice it for the right cause. As I mentioned before, we are assuming this tournament is important, so The Doctor would easily accept having to regenerate if it allowed him to win. Also, with the whole issue of him having limited incarnations (I think its stated as 13 in the movie?), in an episode of 'The Sarah Jane Adventures' (Death of the Doctor Part 2) he says he has 507. Of course, this doesn't make it fact, but neither does the previous mention of 13 lives make that true.

Now, in this scenario that Fury shoots and inflicts a fatal injury on the Doctor, Fury might think he has the victory and walk away. If so, Doc reaches Tardis - victory. Say Fury waits around - Doctor starts regenerating. It may be possible that Nick continues to shoot, but I think he would be surprised & stunned by this glowy man seemingly surviving being shot. Fury then might try and kill the newly regenerated doctor, but remember 'The Christmas Invasion' - the new 10th doctor lost a hand but still had enough energy to grow a new one. Fury might try and kill him but the New Doctor would be able to survive the bullets. In this time, it's almost inconceivable that he wouldn't do something which would allow him to win - such as reaching the Tardis.
