Slapstick Heavyweight Champion
I've seen many comments on this subject, but have yet to see a thread devoted to it, maybe because many would think its too soon to say whether Eugene's return to the WWE is just a fluke used to get the Miz back on Raw or whether he's actually back. Folks, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't re-introduce him if they were planning to bury him immediately. Wouldn't be worth the effort of getting him there in the first place. He's back.
Now, I get from what I've read that the vast majority do not like the Eugene gimmick. To some extent, I can understand the objections. His child-like level of mental and emotional development could be seen as derogatory to others with difficulties of a similar nature, especially given how often Eugene is taken advantage of by others. In the attitude era, nobody really seemed bothered about being controversial, so that issue was largely ignored. Now, in these PC times, the WWE is being far more careful. However, I think this could also be used to draw attention to the difficulties and limitations such a person would face in these situations and (as cheesy as this may sound) be rather inspirational as he finds ways to overcome these difficulties.
I also think there's a wealth of unexplored potential to this character. I'll explain: I'm certain people have at least heard of "savant-ism", I believe a specialized form of autism which can limit the emotional and mental development of a person in most areas, yet in one or two areas the same person is incredibly gifted and talented far beyond normal levels. Why not add this level of complexity to the Eugene character, making him a sort of wrestling savant? That would explain his child-like mindset as well as his ability to unexpectedly come out picture-perfect in using other wrestlers' signature moves. One could say about the ease with which the Miz beat him on Raw that Eugene had simply never fought him before, but now that he has once, he'll be able to take the Miz down.
I know that, even with this in mind, Eugene's child-like nature will mean he'll get taken advantage of by certain heels who wish to exploit him, that much is inevitable, but in the course of a storyline if Eugene discovers he's being used it could lead to his first (so far as I know) heel turn in which he becomes an angry, spiteful, tantrum-throwing little boy in the body of a very strong and very talented-in-terms-of-violence man. You couldn't reason with such a person on an adult level, making it difficult for anyone to reach him. It could work and it could be an intriguing story.
I don't know if the WWE team would ever do this, but I'd like to see it tried. I also hope that this doesn't simply turn into an "I hate Eugene" thread, but I do want to know what others think of this.
