How Would You Introduce A Character In WWE?

CM Steel

A REAL American
These video packages of the latest FCW call-up Damian Sandow are really tripp'in me out on Smackdown.

But how would you as a WWE fan introduce a character into the WWE roster? Remember back in 2004 right after Wrestlemania 20 the E introduced Nick Dinsmore as Eugene, and had former RAW general manager Eric Bischoff play Eugene's storyline uncle? The former reps at the defunct WCW must have been laughing at Bischoff on that one!

Eugene was a eccentric and different kind of character in the WWE at that time, but got over with the WWE crowds.

Back in the WWF in '96 Crush had made his return back to the company after awhile when Brian "Crush" Adams was living the criminal life in his native Hawaii. Where Crush got caught up over different criminal charges (Drugs,Guns,Assault). The WWF at the time wanted to capitialize on Brian Adams character outside of the wrestling ring. And brought in the criminal Crush, before the attitude era.

So in this era of WWE, how would you introduce a character into the WWE?

I've always been a sucker for the mystery wrestler, the guy who just watches over everything but doesn't make his move until he is ready...kinda like a mix of Sting and Edge. You may catch a glimpse of him in the arena stands or walking in the background of an interview segment. I think this is a great way to create some excitement and raise plenty of 'who could it be' ? questions.

The biggest problem now though is nothing is really a secret in wrestling anymore....pretty much every newz site has all the details about who's returning, who's gonna win each match and creative plans for the next 5 PPVs....

I've had this idea for awhile dating back to playing the good ol' Smackdown 2 for the playstation and have had it in mind since then. My character would be somewhat like a a talent agent who has worked for clients in the Nfl, Nba, and Mlb and now wants to try his hand in the WWE. So when it comes to introducing him i'd have some vignettes of him in some very lavish and luxurious places (Fancy Hotel/Office, Golf Course, In his nice car) basically touting his skills and promising his clients fame and success if they sign with him. In sense he would be more of a heel manager with a liitle bit of Ted Dibiase mixed in. I'd even turn on the cheese factor a bit and give him some corny catch phrase he could say after cutting a promo. I came up with the name "Perry Little" so he could say something like "My name may be Little, but I plan on doing Big things in the WWE" or "With a Little help, you can go a long way. To take it even a step further I'd have him hand out business cards on his way down to the ring to the fans that would read "Looking for talent, so this DOESEN'T mean You!
I dunno if it's a good idea or not. Would like to hear some feedback anyway

The way I would introduce a new character to the WWE is to secretly sign an Indy wrestler and have him come in and interfere with a match that lets say would give control to one person or another. The way it would go done is like this: back and forth match in which the heel controls most of the match and eventually has the face in a figure-four lock, the ref is either out cold or distracted. The secrete signing comes from under the ring or the crowd. Frog splash to the heel and the face makes the cover. How does that sound for introducing a new character?

It all depends on the wrestler. If it was a guy who was talented and going to be a monster heel, I'd have him come in and just wrestle for 6 weeks on tv and put him over a lot of preliminary wrestlers. Then on his first PPV, I'd have him destroy a mid carder (preferably a mid card face whose character was becoming stale and had been on a ridiculous recent losing streak and on the verge of going heel). Then start having him destroy other mid carders. For great ways to push someone - look at Goldberg and Kurt Angle.

Alternatively, I'd like to see WWE go back to the 1980s in its emphasis on tag teams. Develop some really good teams. Get them exposure and bring presige back to the tag titles and keep tag teams together for a while so that their split gets more impact.

This worked very well for HBK, and in some ways for HHH (night after WM14- he turned on HBK, and I was not sure if he was going to get over the way he eventually did- but I am glad he proved me wrong as it was entertaining as hell with the new DX).

If stars are not going to be a big hit first off, I'd get them in to pay their dues and get them established as small time stars before having them do a heel or face turn.

How I would introduce a character is simple...

I would start with a top star, doesn't matter if it's heel or face. Heel MIGHT work better for this though. This could also happen on RAW or Smackdown. Ill use PUNK as the main star.

WEEK 1
Punk just lost a long match. As he makes his way up the ramp he stops as a fan is yelling at him. Punk calls the "fan" out and then is attacked. Refs run out to interfere before it gets worse. The "fan" yells at Punk as he is taken away by security.

Run a story on WWE.com and the other show about how Punk was attacked by a "fan".

WEEK 2
Punk rebounds and wins his match. While celebrating in the ring, the same "fan" wearing plain clothes runs in and attacks the star. Agents and refs run out, as well as security and stop him and escort him out.

WEEK 3
Interview with Punk. He is pissed that this "fan" keeps attacking him. 2 weeks in a row he has shown up and attacked Punk for no reason. Punk says tonight he will be waiting for the "fan" to try something.

Later in the ring, Punk makes his way down to the ring. No "it's clobbering time", no pandering to the crowd. He is looking around the arena and over his shoulder. This time the "fan" attacks him from behind and runs away before security can get him.

WEEK 4
Punk is livid. He wants answers. He demands that JL do something about it before he does. JL tells Punk that he will look into it.

Punk is shown later making his way to the ring. The "fan" is shown sneaking around backstage.

After Punk comes out, JL comes out and tells Punk that he has made sure nothing will happen to him. Security comes to the ring and surrounds it.

During the match the "fan" is shown at ringside and waves his ticket. Punk jumps out of the ring and grabs the mic as he heads over. The "fan calls out Punk for having security there. Punk says he didn't ask for them and sends them away.

Punk and the "fan" go back and forth until the "fan" throws a drink in Punks face. As Punk turns back around the "fan" hits him and jumps the guard rail and attacks him. Security comes back down but he gets away. Punk is furious.

WEEK 5
Punk opens the show and calls out the "fan". He comes through the crowd to mass amounts of boos. Punk offers him to get in the ring so they can talk.Punk issues an open challenge at the next PPV for the fan to fight him. No wrestling match, a fight. JL: comes out an says no. Punk has a title match that night and the "fan" is not an employee. Punk threatens the "fan" that if he steps into the ring again, it's on. JL tells them both to leave the ring and tells security to escort the "fan" out.

PPV
Punk is in his title match. As he goes the anaconda vice, the "fan" runs in and tries to go after Punk. Punk tries to attack him but is caught off guard by the "fans" wrestling ability. Punk is taken down and pinned. He loses the title. The "fan" runs up the ramp at Punk's oppenent. Crowd is booing like crazy. JL comes out and tells Punk, along with the fans, that the "fan" is the newest addition to WWE and Monday Night Raw. The "fan" and JL shake hands and then JL raises both of their hands as they celebrate.

Yes I know it's long. But Im a firm believer in building someone up rather than just pushing them right away. The new star gets instant heat and feud with a top guy, along with alignment with the boss.

I know it sounds weird, but I would have him feud with another debuting wrestler out of nowhere. Hear me out:
Say Ryback had several vignette packages in the weeks leading up to his debut.
WEEK 1-Ryback comes to the ring for his debut. The new character is already in the ring, in typical jobber fashion. The new character rolls up Ryback and wins after being dominated. Ryback attacks the new character afterward, clearly defining the face and the heel.
WEEK 2-Ryback says the new character's win was a fluke and demands a rematch. The new character accepts and somehow gets a lucky win again. This time Ryback attacks and "injures" the new character.
Next few weeks-Ryback brags about putting the new character in his place and picks up wins over jobbers. After a few weeks, Ryback assaults another jobber when the new character runs through the crowd and makes the save.
PPV-Ryback and the new character have a match on a Youtube PPV pre-show, then they have a hardcore match on Smackdown to end the feud. Either wrestler could win, then they both move on to feud with new people.

We've had a ton of debuts, re-debuts and what appears to be upcoming debuts lately so the debut thing is kind of saturated at the moment.

This is a stretch but if WWE is trying to promote social media they could start up with a social media stalker who threatens one of the lower card stars. Something similar to DDP's stalking of the Undertaker with the mystery but not as big of name and hopefully better execution. It would sufficiently play out on television but it could also help pull fans in to the social media that WWE has incessantly promoted. No matter who ends up being behind the stalking will be a disappointment but the build up may be exciting.

I haven't worked out all the details but I think it could work. It's a combination of Twitter, DDP stalking the UT, Hillbilly Jim, crazy plastic surgery Tori and the anonymous GM with an answer.

I agree with Vinnie, that is an awesome idea, you got to have the element of surprise so it can have an impact on the fans, but it would also be cool is that character has a surten mistery as well, hype that superstar without revealing his identity untill his debut, so people can be susrprised......

Week 1
Lord Tensai and a heel Brodus Clay are beating the hell out of John Cena. The Miz runs down to the ring and makes the save. The Miz gets the mic and says "Guess what guys.. I've gone good" this shocks the WWE Fans and then in all of the confusion Michael Cole goes into the ring and tells The Miz that he was worried this would happen which is why he has got a treat for Miz. A hoddy wearing stranger pops out from under the ring and attacks The Miz with a led pipe.

Week 2
John Laurinitous is in the ring and he fires Michael Cole. Cole goes into the ring and tells John Laurinitous that he wishes him the best in his future endevous. Johnny Ace than tells Cole that Cole is being fired... not him. The hoddied stranger than comes through the crowd and attacks John Laurinitous with the led pipe. Vince is then shown coming to the ring and tells Cole "Good Look on your new job as GM of RAW"

Week 3
Cole than calls out the new WWE Champion, The Miz and he also wants to see the Heavyweight champion, Sheamus. Michael Cole tells them that there terrible at there jobs and strips the title of them both. Sheamus and The Miz go to attack Cole before the hoddied stranger comes out swinging a chain. He attacks both Sheamus and Miz. Cole than annouses that the hoddied stranger is... DEAN AMBROSE. Dean than takes the mask of and the hood and the crowd is in shock. Cole than abuses his power by making Dean Ambrose the WWE and World Heavyweight Champion.

Week 4
Dean Ambrose than calls out any WWE wrestler who wants a shot at the belt. Jerry Lawler leaves commentary and tells Dean that he don't deseve the title. The GM Michael Cole than comes to the ring and tells Jerry that his in a match tonight. Jerry Lawler than quickly says I don't want to fight Ambrose. Cole says he wasn't going to give Jerry a match against Dean. Michael Cole than annouses that Jerry Lawler will take on... Jerry Lawler! Jerry ain't got a clue what Cole is on about and then tells Jerry that he doesn't understand. Cole says you will be fighting yourself. Jerry than looks at Ambrose who is laughing and kicks him in the nuts. Cole than says that Jerry will be punished and the punishment will be the winner of Jerry vs. Jerry will fight Jim Ross next week on raw. Jerry Lawler is than in the ring punching him self but than Dean comes out and tells Jerry he looks like a stupid idiot. Cole then comes out and changes the match to Dean vs. Jerry Lawler and if Jerry loses than he must fight Jim Ross next week. Dean then defeats the hall of famer.

Week 5
Jim Ross is in the ring and than Jerry Lawler comes out. Michael Cole annouses that Dean Ambrose will be the ref. Jim and Jerry than start fighting but than Dean attacks both men. The Miz than comes out swinging a steel chair but Cole takes it off him on the entrance ramp. He than chokes out Miz and Dean attacks him. Cole sets up a match for at the Royal Rumble. Dean Ambrose vs. The Miz.

Royal Rumble.
Dean Ambrose vs. The Miz for the WWE Championship and Heavyweight championship is up next on the match card. After a roll up Dean beats The Miz but than Sheamus attacks Dean with a brough kick. Dean some how gets up and spits a fire ball in Sheamus face and says "It matches his hair" he than does the same to The Miz. Dean Ambrose then chucks the belts down and says "I Quit"

i'd love to see a wrestler debut during the Money In The Bank PPV. One of the wrestlers in one of the MITB matches gets taken out by a mystery hooded man backstage just as he's about to go out to the ring. The match goes ahead with the remaining participants, but during the match, when everyone's down on the floor after some huge Kofi Kingston spot off a ladder, the same mystery hooded man runs to the ring, and quickly climbs up the ladder, grabs the briefcase and runs out to the back, with the other wrestlers in shock.

This could lead to a whole load of potential storylines. Johnny L could reveal this guy to be someone like Dean Ambrose and say he is the rightful holder of the briefcase. He could eventually end up putting the briefcase on the line and lose to a more experienced superstar (as it would likely be too soon to throw someone new like that into the title picture straight away), but it would be one hell of a debut!

Some may not agree with me but i think we need another masked wrestler and iam not talking about a sin cara type or a mysterio type. I am talking like a monster similar to how kane was when he debuted.

There has to be a mystery to him, and there has to be a good background to his character. Not just wwe slapping a mask of a big guy and sending him to the ring without any build up, which now a days is something they would do, put him in meaningless fueds etc.

The way i would debut him is at wrestlemania 29. Have it during the Taker match with whoever hes facing. Towards the end of the match have kane come out destroy taker to try and give him his first loss. But have taker win after the fact. Taker wins fireworks smoke 21-0 on the tron.

Have kane and taker have a stare down after the match. Boom lights go out. Lights go back on theres the masked monster, kane and taker stare and him, and then he destroys kane and taker, having that the last time kane and taker are ever in the ring again. Lights go out and hes gone and kane and taker lay lifeless on the mat.

Just a little thought i always had even though i know it will never happen.

Oh and the new character must be involved somehow in kane/takers past, like a son, or another brother something along those lines.

I always kind of had a soft spot for how the WWF introduced Earthquake/John Tenta, so perhaps a modification of that general concept? Make it look like he is just a fan, have a face character start randomly choosing a fan to get in the ring to celebrate after a big win or something, (do this for at least a month or two in advance so that it's not completely obvious), and then one week, perhaps after a PPV win, the face calls a "fan" into the ring to celebrate, but this time instead of it being a fan, it's the debuting wrestler who then attacks him, with Cole and Lawler pretending to be oblivious to it, acting shocked that a fan would attack the wrestler, etc. JL comes out the next week, pretending to be pissed, and then announces that he was impressed by the "fan" and signed him to a contract.
