Rate Their Music (updated 1/5)

Welcome to My (And Not Sly's) House
First in maybe a series.

Music means a lot to a wrestler as it establishes their character and lets you know that they're coming. In short, how well does their music work for them?

We'll start at the top: John Cena

How well does Cena's music work for him overall?

John Cena-9/10
In my honest opinion, John Cena's music works very well for him. At the begining, you have the 5 second introduction while the cameras spin and aim at the crowd. It gives the crowd a chance to stand up on their feet. Then the music hits and the crowd goes wild. The lyrics also fit his character real well. He's at the top of his game and he's the face of the WWE. His time truly is now. The only problem with the music is that it is a bit outdated. He's kinda moved from his rapping days into a new Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect kind of thing. Other than that, its a pretty good choice for the WWE's top baby face.

I don't really like Cena's music anymore, I think he needs something new. I liked the Word Life music he used before his current theme, but even that is dated and played out now. I definitely think Cena needs something different now.

I think Cena's music works to a degree, such as at the moment how he's toying with the nexus and wade barrett, he's a funny character who likes to take the piss out of his opponents, but back when he was challenging batista to an I quit match his music just struck me as being out of place in such an intense battle with batista, it's like his music (in my opinion at least) would work fine in casual matches for instance if he were on superstars, but I think it possibly kills a bit of his credibility in being taken seriously if he were in a big serious say, HiAC match.
Let's take for instance Triple H, his music is very hard rock and you know he means buisness when he comes walking to the ring, I think cena's lacks that certain killing intent that makes Triple H's matches even more compelling to watch, but that's just one guy's opinion here

i give his music a 8/10 because its is a reconizable tune you here the begining of it and you know " JCs gonna come ome out here and take care of business" but on the other had it is very annoying and repetive, you can almnost sit at you tv and go "JCs music is about to hit" and before you finish the sentence it does, although it is one of the only themes that isnt a generic hard rock song but, yea so 8/10

9/10...you know it right away, it has a built-in intro, and really gets the crowd going. He could move onto something different, but really this is still getting the job done.

I would have him use Untouchables from WWE ThemeAddict V6 as that would fit him better than his current theme "The Time Is Now" as that is kinda passe now as it is. Or he needs to come up w/ a new song. I hope we see a new theme when he's "re-hired".

The song served it's purpose when Cena was always in the title picture. His time, whether he was the title holder or the number 1 contender was always "now". It does have that intro that lets the crowd know, "get ready to cheer/boo, here comes Cena". I do think, however its time to change it up a bit. If it wasn't for the PG Era, I'd say Bad Man would be good, but he definitely needs something new.

Cena's music gets an 7/10 from me because it is an outdated sound for hip hop. Cena is big enough to get a world famous producer to make a new beat for him. The one thing that he DOESN'T need is a hard rock theme. It doesn't fit him.

I would also argue that hip hop, produced correctly, lends more credibility to a brawler like Cena because people usually associate rap, or hip hop with violence. If Cena were to turn heel, he would be better served with a hardcore gangsta beat than a hard rock one. And I'm not talking about songs similar to Mark Henry's or MVP's old music. Those were awful IMO.

I probably will give it an 8/10. IMO, it suits Cena's character pretty well although its kinda outdated as many have said. It kinda makes you feel jumpy and the intro just lets you know Cena's coming out. As for the lyrics, they kinda make no sense at this current situation where he is fired/getting re-hired as it isn't exactly 'his time' anymore. I doubt WWE will give him new music as it really is too recognisable to change.

10/10 Instantly recognizable and the song sums up his character seriously all you can ask of a theme song.

Theme songs don't need constantly updated to stay fresh ala HBK. As long as it suits his character this theme is and should be here to stay.

I think it is perfect for him, there certainly isn't anything I could think of off the top of my head that would fit him better. You have the slow bit for the first five seconds to let people know that he has arrived give them a chance to get on their feet, start cheering etc. Then the singing kicks in and the lyrics fit him perfectly (perhaps cause he wrote them) talking about Hustle, Loyalty, Respect and how great of a guys he is etc. Also is is an extremely upbeat song, which is perfect for a mega face like him.

This is an interesting thread idea and its appropriate that the first person we look at is John Cena.

At first, I thought that his music doesnt suit him too well. When you listen to the lyrics and the beat, its too reminiscent of his rapper gimmick, which is well behind him. I would say he could music that is a little more suiting for his current "never give up" gimmick. But then I started thinking a little bit more.

John Cena cannot change his music. It is just way to recognizable. The build up in the beginning, followed by the emphatic climax with the "zabadoo" or whatever he says. It gets the crowd unbelievably excited. Who cares about the lyrics when the first ten seconds is the most important part of the song. It is probably the best possible music for a guy like John Cena.

Simply put: It's perfect.

Although some may complain that the song is rap (hip-hop), and it doesn't fit the role of the way John Cena is now---Hustle, Loyalty, Respect (i.e. Super Cena); these people fail to understand that this song practically defines Cena. Every single time the song is being played in an arena, people immediately know it's Cena that's coming out. I've heard people claim before that Cena should change his song to that of pop star's songs because he caters to the children and the women more than to the men---that's absurd. That song is perfect for Cena.

I've always believed that a theme should define the wrestler who uses it because that is the way they will be recognized---through the song. And just as Hulk Hogan's "I am a Real American" defined him, John Cena's "My Time Is Now" perfectly defines him. The theme John Cena holds has not only become apart of Cena, it is Cena. And in no way, should it ever change.

Well if I had to nitpick I would say that he isn't a rapper anymore or that the words like "chain gang" don't make much sense now as they are no longer a part of his gimmick. I also heard the word "ass" somewhere and that is certainly not approved in the PG world.

But like I said its nitpicking. His music has become a part of his identity mostly because it has been in use for a long time. Also the music is perfect in the sense that there is a buildup which tells the people that there hero is about to enter and then there is a sudden blast when it comes to the "zababoo" part ( whatever that is) and that corresponds beautifully with the pop that the people give him. And really the whole music is not played out everytime he enters. Only a fraction of it is played. And whatever part is played does the job perfectly in terms of getting a reaction.

So I would give it 9/10. Because I would only give 10 to something as iconic as Undertaker's theme.

8/10

Though it has basically run it's course. It fits Cena to a T. This gimmick of his has run it's course. I think everyone is as sick of his music, as they are HIM.

But rating it now and when he first debuted it, it fit him perfect, and it will always signify this era in WWE and in John Cena's career overall.

I think the song really goes with John Cena.

At the beginning I used to dislike it a bit when he started using it. Mostly due to the fact that I liked his other one more in the pleasing the ear sense. Now that Cena has had this song for so long, I can't really imagine him changing it. It has actually grown on me and it is cool that it kind of does a small build up to the part where he comes out. I would rate it a 10/10. Some people complain about how it is outdated, but I think it is one of those that will never get old with it's wrestler. Same as HBK, HHH, or Taker to name some of them. Also, I don't think many people even hear the lyrics. I think people focus on John Cena when he comes out not much on the song. Plus some people do not even care about lyrics like me.

On a side note: Good thread, make it a series.

Sidenote; The song says "abadooo" yeah, doesn't mean anthing, but there is no z. As for rating, 9/10. It fits, it identifies, but the lack of any evolution at all is kinda meh. Then again, he'd need to rewrite it, considering his status.

Don't like Cena or HipHop but this theme is very catchy and it definately suited the Cena character

if you listen though the backing bass track is very similar to Latino Heat that Eddie Guerrero used

rating 7/10 only cause i hate Hip Hop and Rap and it is very repetitive

7 or 8 out of 10 for me. The song was perfect for Cena when he was in his "rapping" gimmick but right now it isnt entirely relevant.

However, I like that its instantly recognisable and has the intro to build the excitement of his appearance even further, and the "My Time Is Now" lyrics fit him when he is attempting to take the title or to win a match.

I wouldnt be against Cena having his theme song updated however

I am not a big fan of John Cena as far as character on screen, but i respect him. I always thought the theme was sort of annoying with the constant trumpet or saxaphone or what ever it is playing throughout the song however, I attended Wrestlemania 26 and when his music hit that evening it was amazing. It was my first time seeing Cena live and although on screen it always seemed to "fit" his character, to see it live was pretty intense. Theme music is very important and helps to stir crowd reaction and no matter what the situation his music raises the energy. He plays to it perfectly. I'd give it an 8/10 although i don't know what more could be done to his theme/entrance.

but thats just one mans opinion ::T-Dub

Yeah if your judging based on the criteria of the music representing the man as he is now, it isn't as high as it would be because cena's music sounds a little more catered towards his 05/06 hip-hop gimmick..... but shawn michael had the theme "sexy boy" all the way up deep into his 40s so that isn't a great judging criteria. It is possibly the best music in WWE for hyping a guy, as soon as you hear it, you wait 1 second for the ovation that's coming.

Based on how it works so well for cena, and my belief that cena wouldn't get as good an ovation with a different theme, I'm giving it a 9.5/10. Cena has found his career long theme, he doesn't ever have to change because "My Time" will always mean cena, and thats all he needs to get that pop he does.

10/10. I hate his theme, I find it annoying and I don't really like Hip-Hop.. however I will be watching wrestling monday night and someone I know will stop by who doesn't watch wrestling, isn't intrested in wrestling, but if they hear John Cena's theme music, despite never seeing him wrestle they immediatly

A.) Notice I'm watching wrestling

B.) Comment about John Cena..

Without fail, no matter who they are they immediatly identify that theme song with John Cena.. It's like Stone Cold's Theme, or The Rock... It's not a spectacular song I love, but every time it plays you immediatly know whats going on, weather you watch wrestling or not. Not many theme song have that type of universal influence over people not intrested in your product..

How well does this song fit his character? Does it work? Does it not work? What do you think of it overall?

Terrible song but does it fit in with his character? Absolutely! Mainly because he is fucking terrible too.

That being said, it is a good fit for the gimmick that he has been making a go of in recent weeks. I have enjoyed the aspect of not liking being hit in the face but what guy here can say that he does actually enjoy that? Not me, that is for sure.

However, I think that it is as good of a fit as you are ever likely to see for this gimmick. Obviously, the lyrics fit in with the gimmick and it comes across as being somewhat vain, through the lyrics and over all feel of the music. Cody Rhodes has taken on the gimmick and I think that the music has helped to establish that. When you couple it with the entrance routine that he goes through, I think it would ideally well.
