Old School LDs?

The Brain

King Of The Ring
I just had a thought but I'm not sure how well it would work. Would anyone be interested in doing some LDs on old events? I know that kind of takes the "live" out of "live discussion" but here's what I'm thinking. We pick an event from the past, since it's summer time let's say SummerSlam 97 for example. We pick a date and time where those that want to participate push play on their DVD or whatever they use to watch old events and treat it like a real LD. No pausing or fast forwarding so we're all watching the same thing at the same time as if it were live.

Of course we know the results but I think it might be fun to take a trip down memory lane together. We can discuss how we felt about certain matches and angles at the time with the benefit of hindsight and possibly rediscover some things we forgot about. Maybe some would be seeing the event for the first time.

What do you guys think? Good idea? Would it flop? If there is enough interest I'll try to get something started.

Someone (Ty?) did this before. It was a cool idea but it was kind of hard to pull off.

Yeah I see a few problems with the idea.

1. How many people have access to old events? I have every WWE ppv on DVD or VHS but I'm guessing that's not so common. I don't know how easy these events are to track down on line.

2. Coordinating a day and time. With so many posters from different time zones around the world I don't know what the best time would be. I was thinking maybe 8 or 9 Eastern time but our friends across the pond may not be down with that.

3. Just a general lack of interest. Like I said if enough people express interest here I'll give it a shot but if it ends up being a low turnout I don't know how long I'll continue.

It might be fun but if only a couple people participate I don't think it will be worth it.

Well what was done before was someone posted them to some obscure video sharing site and posted times for the audience to start each part.

I might start a Smoky Mountain Wrestling LD. Seriously... I've gone through almost 30 'sodes of SMW.

Have any observations, Lariat? SURE

1) Paul Orndorff is VASTLY underrated. Very good at heel work and just being a cold-hearted bastard.

2) Jim Cornette's the only booker I've ever seen put a tag team over the world champion in the main card. It was great and all, but just seems odd.

3) Some of the best talkers in the business resided in SMW. Robert Fuller, Jimmy Golden, Dutch Mantell, Buddy Landell, and many others could teach a master's class on how to sell an event or a match.

Two, maybe three years ago we used to use this website where you could stream YouTube videos and have group chats on the side. Most of the time it would be somebody like X posting a list of cool, rarely seen wrestling matches, but once in a while we'd throw on an old episode of Raw from the early 90s or something and watch that.

If somebody could dig that up, I could see that serving your purpose. It wouldn't be recorded on the forum or anything, but you would still get the opportunity to talk to forum people about an old school wrestling show.

I only knew Synchtube aswell... It's a good idea and I would participate anytime I could. Also, I don't have things on DVD, but I sure as hell have everything on my external disk (WWF related only, like EVERY RAW).

So basically /wooo/tube?

Yeah. Would be fun. Just get someone with access to the oldschool PPV to stream it and have people watch it together.

Interrupted by a halftime reading of KB's review of the show.

Segment by segment. They were originally supposed to be a guide as you watched the shows, at least in my mind. Kind of like a written out DVD commentary.

I appreciate the synchtube suggestion but I would prefer to have he LD here on the forum if possible. We're all already registered here with our familiar user names. Personally I would rather watch on my tv. Also I was thinking there's a chance some guests may register to join in. For those that don't have the DVDs would you guys be willing to watch on youtube while participating in an LD here?

I just don't think I'd be able to keep up with the stream. Many times when I try to watch a long video I get the dreaded buffering and eventually give up. I think I need to upgrade my services.

I've been meaning to dig this up for a while now. WWE Network makes this much easier. They're showing Survivor Series 96 at 8 eastern tonight. Anyone interested?

We don't have to go with the live stream either. We can pick any old PPV.
