I said I wasn’t going to give this a second thought, but I’m a hypocrite. I watched the PPV. I wanted to see how bad it actually could be.
I went in with very low expectations, and to my pleasure I was happily rewarded by TNA for my troubles. I’m a hypocrite, but I’m still a wrestling fan so I’m allowed to bash what I love, at least in my eyes.
As I’m doing my evening chores, I have the show running on my computer. Take that for what you will…now let’s begin.
TNA HardCORE Justice PPV Opener:
They are trying their absolute hardest to not refer to ECW in any way, shape, or form. So if you don’t know what ECW is, you’ll pretty much not know what the show is about, unless they fill you in. It’s a tribute show to a defunct company, that their competition owns the rights to, consisting of some of the people who worked for the promotion at any given time. All of which who are not on good terms or were released from the WWE. Taz talks a little, then addresses the “doubters”…as if the “doubters” are the ones out of their minds for thinking this is a bad idea, and says “kiss my ass”. Good job Taz.
The FBI (Tony Mamaluke, Little Guido and Tracy Smothers) vs. Kid Kash, Simon Diamond & Johnny Swinger
Tenay is apparently going to be kissing ass all night. He was working for a rival promotion, but he loved ECW so much. I guess that’s what he was watching on the road when WCW was touring the globe in the 90’s.
Wow, these guys are out of shape, and the years haven’t been kind to them.
The match starts, and they can move pretty well, but it’s nothing to really smile about or appreciate. It’s borderline pathetic. We stop for a dance off...literally. I think even ECW marks had to face palm when they see that this is a spot in the opening match. Now we have a wrestling match, which is highlighted by a sweet piledriver by Kash. FBI wins, and no one really cares.
Rating: D
The match isn’t really important, so they needed to make up for it from an entertainment standpoint, and that it wasn’t. The wrestlers just look bad.
Taz and Tenay talking. Taz mentions how this is his first time calling an ECW match/event. Tenay awkwardly smiles and agrees. Must be an honor for Mike to call an ECW event, when the company is owned by the WWE, doesn’t exist anymore, and he’s working for TNA. Says he’d gladly step aside if Styles wasn’t contractually obligated. Yeah, I’m sure Styles is very dissapointed he’s not there to call the event.
Backstage segment with Al Snow, Stevie Richards, and the Blue Meanie.
They mock that they can’t say ECW, then it gets corny. Fake Blue Meanie comes out, and we accomplish nothing. These guys just flat out look bad on television. What they are forgetting is that this stuff is being televised and sold as a PPV. Heyman’s not even dead and he’s rolling over in his grave 30 minutes into the show.
CW Anderson vs. 2 Cold Scorpio
Decent match with both guys moving pretty well. They all hit their spots and 2 Cold wins it.
Rating: C
Wrestling isn’t about matches anymore. This is 2010. Wrestling is about storylines and build up. With that said this is a pretty good worked match, but it doesn’t mean anything…literally. I can see where this PPV is going. Other than the 2 matches that are being “billed”, it’s going to be a bunch of random matches, with random ECW stars that no one knows or cares about anymore.
TNA wrestlers talk about what they remember from ECW. Apparently they all were watching and remember it. Is it just me or does all of the respect from the wrestlers seem scripted and forced? They look like they all want to say, “why are these 40 year old wrestlers who no one cares about getting one of our PPV slots, while we sit home on our asses?” Just say it Anderson…you’re an asshole, you know you want to.
Backstage: Rob Van Dam and Bill Alfonso
Another horrible RVD promo, and Bill Alfonso doesn’t help. He sounds terrible, and borderline incoherent. This is bad television folks, I’m sorry. Lynn is out, and Sabu is in. RVD is going to win anyway.
P.J. Polaco (Justin Credible) vs. Stevie Richards
I read on the net that Credible works in an Olive Garden now so he must be happy to be here. I know I would be. Richards wins with the Stevie Kick. Sandman comes out afterwards and his some cane spots on Credible for some pops.
Rating: C-
It’s hard to get into it when as a viewer you know the matches don’t mean anything, and have no build. They have completely alienated the TNA fanbase here, and they are doing a poor job of trying to bring new fans in. They are relying on non-TNA fans to watch, but I don’t think they’ve done enough, plus there appears to be no pay off.
More tributes to ECW, with more people that no one cares about.
Brother Runt (Spike Dudley) vs. Al Snow vs. Rhino
You know something….I just can’t watch anymore. This is just a flat out bad show. Out of shape, irrelevant wrestlers, with terrible looks, and an awful weird blue lighting. This is truly unwatchable. The only reason this show should be watched is so you can see how bad these old ECW guys look now, and so you can see how FAR TNA has regressed as a wrestling promotion in just 8 short months.
I intended to watch and write a full review, but I just can’t…not even for free. I read the results of the show, and it looks like I didn’t miss anything important anyway.
So what’s the point of this? The point is that ECW doesn’t mean anything any longer, and these guys just don’t cut the mustard any more. It worked in cult like fashion in the 90s, but over a decade later, wrestling fans are over a decade smarter, therefore you have to bring something to the table that the viewers will enjoy. They relied on the ECW fanbase, and the ECW fanbase only to support this show. Hogan, Bischoff, Heyman, and so many others wanted nothing to do with this show, and for good reason. It doesn’t accomplish anything. ECW is dead. This PPV is awful, and I don’t think there are many out there who will say this is a good show. All it did was tarnish the TNA brand, and make Dixie look as incompetent as many of her biggest critics claim she is. If you like to watch television, then avoid this show in every capacity.
You will feel better on the inside if you do.
Great job TNA at really shooting yourself in the foot with the fans. Hopefully none of these guys will make an appearance in TNA ever again. Will TNA ever be fun to watch again? Will they ever do something right again? I am starting to think that this company will be bankrupt in a year or two if Vince isn’t already on deck to sue them out of existence already.
