Official List of Banned WWE Terms Sent Out to International Voice-Over Workers

The Man They Call WMD

Check Out My Spoiler Page
WWE has an information sheet titled "The Language of WWE" that they send out to people that do international voice-overs for their TV shows in other countries. The sheet includes a list of "Incorrect Terminology" and a list of "Correct Terminology."

"The Language of WWE" reads like this:

"World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is a publicly traded entertainment company (NYSE: WWE) that creates and delivers a weekly action soap opera to its passionate fans.

WWE has been a recognized leader in entertainment for more than 25 years and has developed into one of the most popular and sophisticated forms of global entertainment today.

As a global entertainment brand, the language that we use when communicating on WWE is critical.

Please ensure that you are familiar and employing the below, effective immediately. "

Here's a look at some of the terms:

* "Wrestling" or "catch" is banned. Some European countries still use the term "catch" to describe pro wrestling and "catchers" to describe wrestlers. "The Language of WWE" states that the following phrases are incorrect: "Wrestling is broadcast in 145 countries," or "Catch is broadcast in 145 countries." The correct terminology is: "WWE is broadcast in 145 countries."

* "Sports" is incorrect. "Entertainment or Action Soap Opera" is allowed. For example, "WWE is exciting entertainment" or "WWE is an exciting action soap opera" is allowed. In the last example, "action soap opera" is printed in bold, presumably to make sure there's no confusion.

* "Catchers" or "wrestlers" are not allowed. Incorrect examples are "Catchers are unique characters" or "Wrestlers are unique characters." The term "WWE Superstars" is allowed.

* "Athletes" or "Sportsmen" are now allowed either. WWE gives the following example to use: "WWE Superstars are entertainers with tremendous athletic prowess."

* The term "fight" is not allowed. Matches must be referred to as "match" or "bout."

* "Fighting" is also not allowed but the term "action" is.

"The Language of WWE" printout concludes with the following "Key Soundbytes":

* WWE is pure entertainment

* WWE is an action soap opera

* WWE Superstars are entertainers with tremendous athletic prowess

This is getting ridiculous.

I've been waiting for the return of the action soap opera since the attitude era.... I'm still waiting.

I miss the attitude era and understand we will never see that again. With saying that Vince is trying to change public perception. This is not plausible. PPL will always refer to them/this as wrestlers and wrestling. I'll never understand why he feels the need to do this. If your answer is money I don't believe it. I'm sure the crowds are smaller now, and I won't believe merchandise levels aren't pretty similar to the past.IMO the only thing that makes sense is Linda running for office.

This is in the wrong section it belongs in the "Action Soap Opera" Spam zone, no the wrestling spam zone;)

personally I couldn't give a shit less what they want to call their product as long it's still entertaining, be sides it's not like tthe fans can't still call it wrestling, which we all still will

He's ruining the business he made great.

Not really, he's approaching this from more of a business perspective, pretty sure it's easier to sell ad space on a "action soap opera" or "sports entertainment event" than a wrestling show, Vince is actually keeping his business alive and making money

He's ******ed. Everyone knows what he's selling. Everyone. I'd assume other business people don't want to treated like they're stupid.

Words on a screen are pissing me off. I feel so dirty.

This list is a fake. I'll believe it when I see Big Show billed as The World's Largest Entertainer With Tremendous Athletic Prowess.

Also, "Strap"/"Belt" = "Championship" isn't on there.

I would disagree, Ratings are definitely down from 2000. Merchandise is probably similar. Your point about ad space. There is no way they were struggling with ad space. They had more programming on TV. They had bigger ratings, They had two restaurants at least. In recent times I find it hard/impossible to believe they had trouble getting sponsors.

I'd also like to take the time to praise Vince for increasing the chocolate ration. Death to Eurasia.

Yes, I'm going to continue beating you over the head with this until you get the reference.

I don't know why everyone is so butt hurt over Vince trying to sell his product as something other than pro rasstlin'. People who don't watch the WWE probably don't have a positive opinion of wrestling and a lot of it WAS the Attitude Era's fault.

Orwellian. Don't bother, Sam. Americans don't find this sort of thing creepy.

Well, I was gonna go on about how next he's going to take away national health insurance but-- yeah, you're right.

Oh yeah Vince is a fucking genius! If before people had a prejudice on WWE for being "professional wrestling", well now they won't since WWE is an "action soap opera". IT'S LESS EMBARASSING!

:disappointed:

Like I said before, I have little desire to watch a wrestling company which is ashamed to be a wrestling company. Painting the turd golden won't make it become gold. I don't know how alienating from wrestling will make a wrestling company more successful.

Actionsoapoperamania 28: John Cena vs The Rock

Clash of two extremely popular guys who are very athletic but not athlete's.

Please ignore Muscle And Fitness covers.

It hasn't been a soap opera in years. Soap opera = Adult Entertainment, WWE = PG Child Entertainment. Soap Operas have Sex, Fights and Violence, the only thing the E currently shares with the common Soap is the bad writing/bad acting. It's just a bit of a contradiction.

I still feel more dignified than the guy Slyfox raked over the coals for thinking Sin Cara's "botch" was a big deal.
