NHL Thread - 2009-10

Yeah, the two trades you listed (there were a couple others today, Rangers got Shelley for shit) helped all four teams out, two teams to rebuild, and two teams looking for a playoff run. But Chicago getting rid of Cam Barker is a little silly, he is bound to be a premier player on that young team, but maybe back when the trading begins again, up until the trade deadline, they will have pulled off a great trade to bring in that player who can lead them to the Stanley Cup.

I think the Hawks made a helluva a mistake in trading Barker. I know they just signed Keith to a huge deal, but I think in the long run, Barker will be the better d-man. I guess they're taking the here and now approach in trying to morgage the future in order to win the Cup now, but Kim Johnsson is past his prime to me. Maybe they're making cap room to bring someone else in, but if they dont, this was a bad trade.

Agreed, Kim Johnsson is no longer a great defensemen, so on the offshot that Chicago is so blind and shortsighted that they made this move alone to improve their team, then that is very strange. I assume it is a move that opens up th epurse a little bit. Cam Barker now gets a great chance to shine on a poorer team, and now we have to see Barker 6 times a year.

How do you figure? Keith is one of the top defensemen in the league, I dare you to ask any professional player. Barker has immense talent, but to say that he would be better down the line than Keith is just dumb. Keith gets more ice time, is out in more offensive and defensive situations. He is the heart of the defense, and with Brent Seabrook, is part of a damn good tandem in the NHL. Barker is still trying to find his true stride. We got a glimpse in the playoffs last year, but we haven't seen it much this year.

Obviously this move is for the future, as they kind of fucked up with the Cap in the offseason. Personally I would have preferred it to be Campbell, as he is more expensive, but you know what, Soupy isn't having a bad season. So it is what it is. They have a veteran d-man coming in, who is going to be a free agent, and it isn't proven he will be playing the same amount of minutes, or as much. Jordan Hendry has been waiting in the wings for his chance to step up as a member of the defense and could slide right in as well. Sad to see him go, but oh well, it is a business.

Im a HUGE Keith fan, hell, hes the first d-man I drafted on my fantasy hockey team. I think he was justified the huge contract and isnt overrated in the slightest bit. I just think Barker is the better TALENT,as I stated in my post, and I think the 'Hawks made a mistake in trading him. This isnt a slight of Keith at all. I just dont understand trading Cam Barker for an aging defenseman. Thats all.

Canucks made the Blue Jackets look bad in the second half of the game, right after Columbus made us look bad in the first half. Canucks finish off before the break after they play Minnesota and are on a two game winning streak, and have been alright on the road trip. Nothing to note about the game, you know, except we let ANOTHER early goal. Luckily we were able to come back from it, Canucks are really living up to the Come Back Canuck name. Samuelsson continues his great offense play, since being left off of team Sweden, although his defensive play remains an issue.

Two possible injuries before the last day of hockey tonight, for two players hoping to lead their team in the Olympics, and back on the NHL ice.

Getzlav and Hossa have both been injured, with Hossa receiving that HUGE hit against the Thrashers. He probably wont play today for the Blackhawks is the current word, but if he is concussed, there is a chance he wont get the chance to lead the Slovaks, crushing for that team that has high hopes for a top 5 finish this year.

Well the NHL players are starting to get that rust off their legs right now, but for the Canucks there is great news, as they look out on their last 6 away games. Pavol Demitra has looked incredible for Slovakia, as he looks to get back into the grove. With Demitra playing as well as he has in the Olympics, back on the Canucks, he will look to be dominate. And Luongo wil the chance to win Gold will look great as well.

The RAngers beefed up their backstop position today, and I think it was a wise move. Sweden's disappointment must hit Lundqvist hard, and the Ranger's sensed this. Dallas with their three goalie problem will lose Auld to the Rangers after putting him on waivers. Alex Auld is one of my favourite back ups, after his time in Vancouver. Too bad he has been such a journeymen after leaving the Canucks, now on this fourth team. Miika Wiikman wasn't gonig to cut it for the Rangers, but Auld should.

The NHL starts back up tonight after the Olympic Break. As far as the Leafs are concerned, it's getting the young guys a chance to showcase their talent and try to get out of the basement of the Eastern Conference and the League. Hopefully they can win some games and get out the bottom 5 and avoid giving Boston a top 5 draft pick.

This right now is the most exciting part of the season as we are approaching the Trade Deadline. The trade deadline in the NHL is different from most sports in that there is much more activity and there is a whole day's coverage on it and I absolutely love being glued to the tv and internet following the trade rumours and trades. The deadline is March 3 and we have already seen two trades: Jordan Leopold to the Penguins for a second round pick and Denis Grebeschov to the Predators for a second round pick. The trading has began, let the frenzy begin!

Nothing massive of note yet, as we have just over 24 hours in the trade deadline. But for all you fans of the Senior LEague of the NHL, some 48 year old man was traded today to the Atlanta Hip Replacements. Wait, this guy is still a player? Yep, Chris Chelios at 48 years old, is still looking to play NHL as he went to the Thrashers today. He has a chance to actually hit NHL ice there though, so maybe one of the only, if not only players to play in the 80s, has a chance to play in the 10s. IF he touches ice, he will have played from 1983-2010, a remarkable career, that is only bested by Mr. HOckey himself.

With they trade dealine approaching, there are teams going for that key player they feel. I think the Canucks could benefit from a defender, but they got good news. Bieksa says he is getting better, after that scary cut from a skate. It was his second cut, and it continues the question of the dangerous skates players have.

Mitchell is starting to get into a scary time. He has been out with a concusion that seemed like it wasn't that bad, to extremely scary. Hopefully he can come back.

Canucks have three NHL caliber goalies. Could Schnieder be tradeable? Canucks could probably bring in a goalie from a team looking to lose a big salary palyer.

Trading haven't reached a peak yet I hope. Nick Boyton went to Chicago, Sens got a decent puck moving Defensemen in Sutton. Canucks are in talks with possibly bringing in Scott Niedermayer, but so is the rest of the NHL. I heard talk of Canucks being willing to move Cody Hodgson, something I find risk, due to the fact he could be great, if he recovers from his back injury.

Canucks were in action tonight. They went down 2-0 early, but they tied it up. But Columbus showing some strength, taking another lead. Canucks tied it up, and with Raycroft in net, won in overtime. Canucks stay first in their division, and look to bring something in to assure this.

But I think its no longer enough to win the division for Vancouver. It is time that the Canucks win the cup, so they NEED to do something tomorrow.

The Leafs played a terrible game tonight against the Hurricanes. It could be because of the lay off, but they just didn't have it. Giguere was battling the puck all night and never really got into the groove.

The Leafs did make a move tonight by trading Ponikarovsky to the Penguins for Luca Caputi and Martin Skoula. The Penguins get a big, solid winger to help out with scoring depth in the playoff race. The Leafs get a good prospect in Caputi and Skoula was including because the Penguins had to get under the cap so the Leafs took him in the deal as well. I've heard they could move Skoula before the deadline.

The Leafs should be fairly active tomorrow with the likes of Stempniak, Exelby, Finger, Frogren, Primeau, and possibly others being discussed in trade talks throughout the league. Let the frenzy begin.

Premeau is a name I have heard come up for trades. I actually missed Ponikarovsky's trade, but it was obvious as Toronto are sellers. Bringing in Skoula is just to be used in a trade, I am sure of it. I do feel sorry for the guy, as he no longer really has any ability left. Toronto also has Kaberle, who I heard was interested in gonig to Boston. His no trade clause will make it interesting.

I've been following hockey off and on this year just so I can have some further sports discussions with my buddies, as they are hockey buffs. So obviously this post won't be as knowledgeable as most of your guys, as my hockey knowledge isn't as high as it use to be. But I'm actually looking forward to the run to the playoffs as I can see any of the top teams winning it all this year. The Devils made the excellent pickup of getting Kovlachuk from Atlanta, so that definitely makes them a top draw in the East. San Jose is always in contention in the West, but they are like the Chargers of hockey and always choke come playoff time. I think the Blackhawks are the team to beat in the West and I really see them winning it all this year after a solid playoff performance last year and with some great young players in Toews, Kane, and Keith, I like their chances.

So TM or Simpsons or CH any information would be great and I'm looking forward to actually posting a bit more in here. Obviously I won't be able to hold my own in debates and such, I'm just looking to further my hockey knowledge.

To try and catch up from the trades... There hasn't really been much. Canucks traded away Schnieder, after they gave him his bonus for bgeing with the team. He went to Phoenix, but if he makes an impact, I'd be shocked, because he didn't with the Canucks. Then again, he might be their Murphy.

Anaheim and Carolina traded Pogge for Ward of the Aaron variety, and like I said, Skoula was gonig to be on the move AGAIN, as he ended up in New Jersey. Derek Morris is back home in Phoenix, as they helped their back end. They have become the winners of the trade so far, as they also picked up Wolski. That team from all its finacial problems isn't doning what most teams do and fall, they are loading up for some hoorahs.

Toskala and Kipper are reunited in Calgary, as Calgary backs up their starter.

Washington added a good 2-3rd liner in Belanger. That is a team many are going to look to to win the Stanley Cup. Come April as Sidney Crosby and his Pens are looking for a smooth ride, I doubt the Caps will give him one.

Halpern was picked up by Los Angeles. They won't make a huge splash in April, but they will be in the play offs.

Well if you are cheering the Devils on, I can see them being eliminated early into the playoffs, as Kov is a playoff choke artist. They just don't have the depth in defense or scoring, and after Brodeur's shaky starts before the Olympic breaks and into the Olympic breaks, sometimes you just can't count on him.

San Jose has their incredible top line, but they are lacking in goaltending in my books once Nabokov starts to get tired. If San Jose's top line produces, they will win, if they get shut down, its back to the drawing boards on how to convert a Presidents trophy into a Stanley Cup.

Chiacgo is a team that I see winning the conference if they are unchallenged. They CAN shut down San Jose, and as the have binded on all levels, and are a great team. Winning the cup? I am not sure, but I didn't count on th ePEnguins making it to the finals twice yet as they were so young.

It's been a while for me.

Well the Hawks got their first win after the Olympic break against Oilers last night, beating them 5-2. After a disappointing loss to the Islanders on Monday, it was good to see them get the two points last night.

This win was for the most part sheer domination from the Hawks. While the score might not indicate that, this game was pretty lobsided performance wise. For most of the game, the puck was in the Oilers zone while the Hawks just let loose with shot after shot after shot. That's exactly what this kind of team needs to do; just keep getting the puck to the net and creating some plays.

Good to see Huet get a solid performance in net as he was struggling the last couple games he played while Niemi started the last five. If rumors are true, he might not have been a Hawk last night considering the fact that they were looking to trade him. In the end, it was nice to see them keep him as I think he is a very important part of the Blackhawk's structure. He almost consistently keeps his team in the game with a few lapses here or there, and shows that he can be one of the best goalies in the league.

Alright now this is something new I'll be doing. I will pick the players I believe that deserved the three stars for the game. So, here it is:

My three stars of the game.

3. Edmonton Oilers G Devan Dubnyk - You might be asking yourself "How could he pick a losing goalie that gave up five goals." Now here me out. In the first two periods of the game, he managed to keep the game tied while the Hawks were absolutely ablitterated him with shots while his defensemen gave him little help. It was only until the third period when the Hawks got a trio past him.

2. Chicago Blackhawks D Duncan Keith- Another game, another solid Duncan Keith performance. He ended the night with a +1, two assists, and the most time on the ice for the Hawks with roughly 26 minutes. He continues to show why he is one of the top dog defensemen in the league. It's hard not to expect something good out of him every night.

1.Tie- Marion Hossa and Jonathan Toews- This hopefully won't happen again, but I couldn't give these two anything lower than #1 star. If you have a problem with two #1 stars, you can take it up with our complaints department. *Holds up trash can*........I kid I kid. Anyways, yeah these two both performed very well. For Hossa, he had one 4-4 goal and an assist. As for Toews, pretty identical stats with the difference being his goal was 5 on 5. These two olympians show why they are such great leaders on this team.

The Hawks play next with, guess who, the Vancouver Canucks. When these two teams go at it, you can always expect a great game. This is definitely a rivalry in the making.....or already made? I dont know. You decide.

Well, school kept me out, but now I am back to talk about the sport I love. If you watched the game last night, which I am sure 99% of you didnt :suspic: you would have saw what Canucks have done time and time again. Being down 3-0, they came back to beat the team they are in a race for for the North West Division 6-4, the 10th time after being down after 40 minutes. Canucks since the Olympics are 4-1, with only one loss against Chicago.

The Sedins aren't Scoring, but they still have 12 points in 5 together. They are getting scoring from Samuelsson, and other players, Sammy got 3 goals last night in the win. Luongo hasn't played well, but after getting beat up, Canucks are finding ways to come back.

Canucks are playing Phoenix tonight, and after playing their 6th game in 8 days, they get to go home. I am sure they don't care if hey win or not, Raycroft is in the net, and just want to get home for the last 15, 10 at home.

The road trip from hell is over. Canucks return home for the first time since January, and they couldn't be more happy. They got a point in Phoenix, and are still in fourth in the NHL at this point. They got great news when Kevin Bieska looks ready to come back. Willie Mitchell is still questionable.

Canucks have 15 games left now, and ten of those are at GM Place. They look to lock up a playoff spot as soon as possible. It is something that only AO's Washington Capitals have done.

And at 48 Chris Chelios is the oldest man in over three decades to play in the NHL, as he laced up for the Atlanta Thrashers. Anyone have a comment on that?

I don't think Chris Chelios will ever retire. OK, he will eventually, but man it seems as if he'll go on for as long as he's alive. It's kind of weird seeing him in a Thrashers jersey, but you know what if he wants to play and if a team is willing to sign him, I say go for it. Plus it's a real treat to have him in the dressing room and he can give the Thrashers some valuable veteran experience for however long he's there.

The Leafs have seen a lot of overtime and shootout since the Olympic Break was over and they've put up a couple of wins. The team is very young and right now the young guys are getting a chance to showcase their stuff and I must say, I like the look of the team and the outlook of the future. They play the Oilers on Saturday and hopefully they can keep up the pace and pick up some points in the final stretch of the season.

Chelios is just one of those players I wish would finally leave. I still wont forgive him for his bullshit remarks he said about Linden, when Linden had the stress of having to deal with all the players during the lockout.

Chelios does play with heart, I am not sure why he wont give in though and hang up finally. He has been playing since the 80s and although he still has some moves, he is the Ric Flair of the NHL.

To talk about Toronto, wow, that team sucked at the beginning of the season, but I think rebuilding is underway. Burke is finally showing why he is such a great GM. It is a hard team to rebuild, always pressure to win, yet never the pieces needed.

The major talk going on right now after the general meeting of General Managers is hits to the head. I myself am against the shoulder hits to the head, as they don't really have a place in the game now adays. Yes, it is a tradition, that big hit down the middle, but in this day and age, with the protective gear and shoulder pads, you are being hit with some heavy shoulder pads.

Matt Cooke, a known rough player and instigator had a very vicious hit. It was clean although questionable, still knocked Marc Savard out, a hit that could have ended his career. With the Richards hit earlier, and cleaner hits like the Mitchell hit, they are still dangerous. The league should instead of looking out for tradition, look out for players, their lives, and their ability to keep playing.

Here is the video, and weigh in on this situation in the NHL this season

Canucks had a great game tonight for sure. They played their first home since before the Olympics, and had their medal ceremony. And after an initial power forward push by the Senators, Canucks took over. When I say the Canucks, I mean line one, which had 16 shots, with Samuelsson getting two goals to move to the 30 goal plateau. Canucks are hot, especially with the Swed, who didnt get to represent his country. Since the Olympics break, he has 8 goals in 6, goals in all the games. Henrik Sedin moved up to 4th in points all time for the Canucks as a Canuck, and also tied for first in assists. After the 5-1 win, Canucks move to 5-1 since the break, and are closing in on the Blackhawks for 2nd in the west, and 3rd in the NHL.
