WZCW's Mr Excitement
the happiest night of my life.

This was special and watching things like this still gives me goosebumps.

Dudek's double save from Shevchenko in extra time is up there in the 'miracle' bracket.

Jamie Carragher's defensive performance from when it went 3-3 until the end of extra time is still one of the finest I have ever seen. He literally would have killed himself or anyone else to prevent Milan scoring again

Indeed, I can't fucking believe that Real Madrid hasn't used him more..

The league season blew chunks admittedly but it helped make that night. Stevie and Carra were great in the second half and that double save from Dudek was beyond miraclous.

That was a really great week, I met my fiancee the week before.

Benitez tried to win the Champions League. He was the first manager to ever do that in England, and it worked.

It was just incredible. I don't think anyone could watch that match and not find it exciting, even if they weren't a football fan.

And allowed to compete the year after.

Only because UEFA failed to recognise that a league might be competitive enough for a team to win the Champions League and yet not automatically qualify for the following season's competition.

To punish a league, like they did in Spain one of the years Real Madrid won it but did not qualify through their league position, is unfair.

In essence, the rules stated, and to my knowledge still do, that the English Premiership and any other league should be punished for being too competitive. If UEFA wants to have the holders automatically qualify for next years competition then they cannot complain when one of the bigger nations have a winner from outside the top four

What are they gonna do? be all like "stop hiring the best in the world dammit, spread the talent's bitch!"?

Needs better rules.

They certainly need clarifying. As hyper-competitive as the Champions League and many of the domestic leagues are, it is bound to happen again

With guys like Platini and Blatter in charge of UEFA and FIFA, that is exactly the kind of ridiculousness we are going to get aimed specifically at English teams...

"STOP BEING SO GOOD!!"

I bet Blatter creamed himself when Chelsea, Utd and Arsenal all went out

Too true.

I'm not going to pretend that I think UEFA ballsed up by letting them in but then again, being allowed to defend a title is a right every champion has.

It didn't matter. Everton screwed up their qualifying and everything was made right :D

Probably because Iker Cassilas is about a million times better and doesnt make about 10 costly mistakes a season.

I know I know, but 1 match in 3 years period, that's just wasting money on a payment where he could do much better in some other club.

That's even worse.. :disappointed: but they still have to pay him every month, that's ridiculous if you're not gonna use him.

Well he does play in the most important position and you need a good back up.Its Real Madrid they wont be having many sleepless nights about Dudeks wage packet

They could at least have him play friendly matches for the sake of keeping him on his game, it's not like they're gonna loose anything from that, and I still think it's ridiculous to waste money on someone you don't use, rich or not.

They have changed it. If the winner doesn't qualify they get the lowest ranked team's qualification spot. As of next season, when Scotland only get one spot, that means Rangers could win the Champions League, but come second in Scotland and be in the next season's competition, but Celtic could win the league and miss out. Of course, that would require Rangers to win in Europe, so it probably won't happen.

he does play in friendlies and cup matches

I think you've got to give the champions the chance to defend the title. I don't see why there can't be a "champions spot", and their country gets an extra qualifier if they win it. That's what used to happen in the European Cup days.
