Moms In Jail

Should female inmates raise babies behind bars?

Seriously, what kind of example are you giving your child if you raise them while in jail? A bad one to be exact. If you are raising your child behind bars, you are showing them a bad example in society. They could get the idea it's remotely ok to do bad things. Or they could think that jail isn't so bad.

If the other parent is around, that parent should be raising the child while the mother is in jail. If the other parent isn't around, then another family member, like a grand-parent, uncle or aunt of the child, or even possibly a foster home should raise the child until the mother is out of jail and is capable of raising her child. But until then, the mother's should not be raising their children in jail.

No. Even if the mother were to raise her child perfectly, teaching them the exact morals one would want in a human being. No. Jail is no place for a child.

Children are taken away from parents all the time because they don't have enough time for their child and don't have the ability to find someone to care for said children. How is a mother supposed to find the time in jail? She is constantly monitored and supervised, and subject to a strict schedule. And I'm pretty sure "Child raising" is not part of the schedule.

Even if she were allowed enough time to care for the child, how is she going to get the materials needed for said child? Prisons routinely restrict the different kinds materials prisoners may have (and for good cause). Who says the mother won't use one of the bottles or pacifiers or something to try to mount an escape. Simply, she can't be trusted. She's a convicted prisoner.

Even if the mother were to be given the time and materials to raise the child, the state has every right to refuse to allow the raising of a child in their prisons. Child welfare takes children from unsavory homes all the time. If you allow one imprisoned mother to raise her child, all Child Welfare has to do is walk in, say "Yeah...this is plenty unsafe." and walk away with the child. End of discussion. Give it to a relative, or allow the state to raise it for your prison term. But by no means should a mother raise her child in jail.

Definately not. Does anyone really believe the best place for a baby is jail? I'm hugely critical of the fact people automatically assume the best place for a child is with their mother, it's even worse when that mother has commited a crime bad enough to warrant a place in jail.

The child should be raised by other family, which should be organised by social workers. There's the father, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and all should be looked at to determine the best place for the child. If none of them are suitable, a family should be found to foster them. Children should in no circumstances be brought up in prison.

Absolutely not. Jails are unclean, disease infested and unsafe. Violence in jails are commonplace, especially amoung women. I would venture to say that harden criminals would have no problem targeting someone's baby as a means of offense. Under no circumstances could this be a good thing. Even if the jail would have a seperate wing for mothers, it still would not be ideal or healthy.

I saw this story, so I'm going bump this thread with it.

Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki has filed for sole custody of his ex-girlfriend's unborn baby, if it's proved he is the father, according to a petition filed last week in a Dallas County courthouse.

The Beaumont Enterprise first reported the story on Thursday.

Crystal Taylor was arrested May 6 at Nowitzki's Dallas home on a warrant out of Jefferson County on a theft of services charge. She was served with Nowitzki's petition to adjudicate parentage at the Jefferson County Jail Monday, according to the Enterprise.

Neither Nowitzki nor Taylor is identified by name in the court documents. The petitioner is identified as "D.N.," a resident of Dallas County and Taylor as "C.T.''

Taylor's lawyer, Scott Renick, told the Enterprise his client told him about the documents, which were filed June 12 in the 330th District Court of Dallas County by Katherine A. Kinser of the law firm Kinser and Bates.

"We have to determine the best options, legally, to protect her rights and those rights of her unborn child,'' Renick told the Enterprise. "Our only focus in this case is to ensure the laws of the state of Texas are complied with to protect any and all rights Taylor has in delivery [of the baby] and her rights as a mother."

Taylor is accused of failing to pay for $11,000 worth of dental work in December 2004. She was indicted on the charge in 2006.

Taylor's trial date has been set for July 27. She also faces a 2000 probation violation charge in Missouri.

I think Dirk is doing the right thing. He easily has the resources to take care of the child, and the mother's track record doesn't exactly help her cause. I just hope she doesn't do anything stupid and/or nothing happens to the kid while she is in jail. What does everyone else think?

It would be pretty bad on the kid especially if oneo f the parents themselves is actually in jail, because you wouldn't know what kind of a person they were behind bars and after they leave jail, if they actually can.... change because of what they have done in the pen or what they have seen.

Mrs. Sexy, I agree with you 99%. It is leaving children with a horrible mindset for life. Look at it this way, if a mother raises her kid behind bars, the child will be more likely to end up in jail one day. Because of that we will have more criminals on the streets hurting people, robbing homes, etc. IMO, if a mother is behind bars, the child should be in custody of the father. If the child has no father, dyphus should take control. Anything to stop crime on the streets of this country.
