MMA News and Tidbits

Why do you want to see the fight? So you can say one of your favorite fighters got his face bashed in twice, but he still fought for the title? Like nothing would be different from the first fight. I'm a big Bisping fan, but I don't want to see him fight Anderson because it'd just be a one sided thrashing. It's a little different for Fitch because he does win a lot, but it would be a one sided fight yet again.

That would be of course if I believe Fitch would get his face smashed in again, which I wouldn't know for certain unless I saw the rematch. You're a big Bisping fan but you don't want to see Bisping challenge for a title? That seems odd because I want to see my favorite fighters fight for belts regardless of it they win or not. And what is to say Fitch can't beat GSP in a rematch? It's MMA, we have seen that anything can happen. If Matt Serra can upset GSP I have no doubt in my mind that Jon Fitch can beat him. It is isn't a matter of watching my favorite fighters get their faces smashed in, it's a matter of seeing my favorite fighters fight the very best.

This kind of makes me nervous for JDS. He's my favorite UFC heavyweight and has earned his title shot, more than Cain has I think. The list of opponents that JDS has beaten is better than the list that Cain has. Velasquez has Nog and Kongo where as JDS has Nelson, Struve, Cro Cop, Gonzaga and Werdum. Even though I believe Lesnar takes JDS, I would still want to see the fight. This could be a very dangerous fight for JDS; Carwin's power is obviously no joke and we haven't really seen Dos Santos get hit. No question that Cigano is the better striker just not as powerful. If he can last an initial onslaught than he could easily get the win. Well, maybe not easily but his chances would great increase. And let's be real about Carwin's wrestling...it has never looked great. Gonzaga took him down relatively easy and his take downs have never look slick. Plus, I actually believe that Dos Santos does have good tdd and a good ground game.

Carwin will need at least two good names under his belt before he gets his rematch. A fight with a gatekeeper (Nelson, Kongo, Mir, Gonzaga) and then a fight with the loser of Brock vs Cain.

The more I think about it, the less I become worried for JDS.

I mean, when you think about it, all he has to do is survive the first round. Now, I know that's easier said than done, but still... I think JDS has enough brains, speed, and elusiveness to keep Carwin from getting his hands on him. JDS won't be dumb enough to mix it up with Carwin and risk getting caught up in the clinch, where Carwin will be able to control him with his size and strength. No, JDS will keep his distance and use to boxing to pick Carwin apart, until eventually putting him away or winning a decision. Carwin's chin is still untested, but we'll definitely see what it has to offer come the time he fights Junior dos Santos.

I just seen that it is official that Carwin is fighting Nelson now at UFC 125. Here is the email that Carwin sent out today,

I will be fighting Roy Nelson on 1-1-11 in Las Vegas Nevada. The fight will be the Co-Main Event of the Edgar Maynard rematch.

I think Roy is a tough opponent for anyone. He has been in several main event situations and has fought a lot of veterans in the sport. I am honored to be fighting again and feel like Roy is a worth opponent.

My goal for the fight is to be exciting and go home with the win. I have a lot to prove as does Roy so this should make for a great fight.

I liked either match up. Definitely was risky for JDS to put his title shot on the line if he did fight Carwin, but we would've seen if JDS has a chin. With Nelson getting the fight we know he has a decent chin and can go for all three rounds, he just has to be able to take Carwin's shots as well as he did JDS's, but has to be more effective, with Carwin being slower I think Nelson should do better with his striking, he just has to be careful of those huge power shots.

So JDS will still now fight the winner of Lesnar/Velasquez.

Well for the snooze-fest of a main event we have at UFC 125 with the Lightweight Championship bout between Edgar and Maynard, the rest of the card is looking solid,

Clay Guida vs. Takanori Gomi
Thiago Silva vs. Brandon Vera
Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann
Phil Baroni vs. Brad Tavares
Antonio McKee vs. Jacob Volkmann
Nate Diaz vs. Dong Hyun Kim

Now all of the fights haven't been finalized yet, but this in the works for the card. Just don't understand why Leben is getting a step down in competition, after beating Simpson and Sexyama, I would think he would be fighting someone a lot better.

So apparently Ken Shamrock fought this past weekend. He beat some fatass by decision. Honestly, it should be impressive that Shamrock even won a fight but the fact that this dough boy took him to a decision should be more then enough to indicate that Shamrock should hang it up. God forbid he actually had lost that fight.

In other news, Nemesis Fighting is putting together a very nice fight card for November 13. It is similar to the Sharks card a few weeks back, and that isn't just because Keith Jardine is fighting on it. It actually has a decent line up of fight so far.

Former UFC mainstay Keith Jardine will look to snap a five-fight losing streak when he headlines Nemesis Fighting “MMA Global Invasion” against Strikeforce veteran Francisco France on Nov. 13 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Punta Cana in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Jardine, who was cut from the UFC roster after a majority-decision loss to Matt Hamill at “The Ultimate Fighter 11” Finale in June, is coming off a split-decision setback against Trevor Prangley at Shark Fights 13 last month. France will carry a two-fight winning streak into the match, having submitted “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 7 alum Cale Yarbrough at a Fight Me MMA event in August.

The event is being promoted as part of a four-day (Nov. 11-14) all-inclusive vacation package. Once at the resort, fans can take in the MMA event and all pre-show festivities, including a golf tournament, fighter meet-and-greet, weigh-ins, VIP party and concert. MMA-only tickets are available for those who only want to attend the fights.

Along with Jardine-France, the co-main event pits former Strikeforce heavyweight title contender Paul Buentello against fellow UFC veteran Kerry Schall. A number of other matchups have also been finalized: Eliot Marshall vs. Chris Davis, Jeff Curran vs. Travis Marx, Terry Martin vs. Marcus Hicks, Dean Lister vs. Kyle Seals and world-ranked flyweight John Dodson vs. John Moraga.

Jardine fights a guy with a 6-1 record, but mostly by submission. Looks like the right kind of fight for Jardine to win, at least on paper.

Paul Buentello vs. Kerry Schall could be alright. I like Buentello, he seems like a nice guy. Schall is probably the unluckiest person in MMA history so it would be a feel good moment to see him win this fight, though I doubt he would.

Eliot Marshall is an awesome prospect who got unfairly bounced from the UFC. A 3-1 record does not warrant a release. I hope he makes the UFC realize what they let go, and that this will be a jump off for him to either go to Strikeforce or back to the UFC.

Also, Jeff Curran, Terry Martin and Dean Lister have at least a little bit of name recognition, so I am curious to see how they all do as well.

So, Chris Leben's career renaissance has come to a screeching halt.

Officers arrested (Chris) Leben on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant Tuesday. He was released from custody after posting $1,000 bail.

Police say Leben was driving on the west-bound side of the H1 Freeway just before 2 AM, when he lost control of his pickup and crashed into a wall near the Kapiolani Boulevard off ramp. He was allegedly driving without a license and without insurance.

He is scheduled to appear at Honolulu District Court November 22.

In 2008, Chris Leben turned himself into authorities on a previous DUI charge and was sentenced to 35 days in jail. Leben is currently scheduled to fight Brian Stann on New Year's Day.

To get caught drunk driving is bad. Doing it unlicensed and unregistered is worse. He's getting definite jailtime, probably longer than 35 days this time around. It's a shame, he got his career back on track and seemed like he was off the alcohol, which had been such a destructive force for him.

Typical Leben though. We should have seen this coming. With how unreliable he is with this bullshit, he'll probably never get consideration for a title shot (and that's with a huge strike against him for his first go-around against Silva in the first place).

Is there proof yet though that he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs? Right now it's just suspicion... I mean, to be let out on bail, by that time he had to be tested an what not, so was he or was he not drunk? Without that question answered... it's not right to assume he was under the influence. Maybe, just maybe, he got in an accident, and the fact that he didn't have a license or insurance is why he got put in jail? It's definitely possible, and I certainly hope that ends up being the case.

Typical Leban. I was really starting to think he got his career, and life on the right track, and I was really happy for him. Unfortunately he goes and does shit like this. What the FUCK could he be thinking?! He was at the highest point in his career coming off two huge wins, and he fucking drives without registration, and a license?! Jesus Christ that is stupidity. Drunk or not that was a stupid move that probably killed his career.

Two really non-surprising releases by the UFC the past two days. Patrick Cote and Gabriel Gonzaga both are gone now, following their losses at UFC 121. Cote was never impressive since coming back from the leg injury he suffered during the Silva title fight. Alan Belcher dominated him until he subbed him in the 2nd round, Tom Lawlor used his superior wrestling skills to control their fight and won by unanimous decision. With an overall 4-7 record for the UFC including losing his last three, guess it was time for him to move on. I'm sure Strikeforce will scoop him right up to add to their Middleweight group, who knows maybe he will move back up to Light Heavyweight if they sign him, since that division is still fairly week there.

Gonzaga's release was expected as he looked like shit in his last fight versus Schaub. It was a fight he could've easily turned around, if he would've went for some damn takedowns, hell we would've had Schaub subbed at the end of either the first if time didn't run out. But he abandoned any game plan he had and let Schaub win a dull fight. He has decent name recognition so I'm sure Strikeforce seems like a logic choice for him to go there.

World Extreme Cagefighting's final featherweight champion, Jose Aldo (18-1 MMA, 8-0 WEC) will make his UFC debut on Jan. 1.

UFC president Dana White today announced that Aldo – who by virtue of the pending UFC and WEC merger is now the UFC's first featherweight champ – will defend his title against a yet to be named opponent at UFC 125.

Featuring a lightweight title fight between current UFC champion Frankie Edgar and top contender Gray Maynard, UFC 125 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The main card airs live on pay-per-view.

White says Aldo's opponent has yet to be determined, but he believes the Brazilian featherweight could use the new stage to become an MMA superstar.

"This kid could be a huge star," White said. "[WEC fighters] are finally on the biggest stage in the world now."

Potential opponents for Aldo include Canadian veteran Mark Hominick (19-8 MMA, 3-2 WEC), who recently picked up his third consecutive WEC win with a split-decision victory over Leonard Garcia at WEC 51, as well as Josh Grispi (14-1 MMA, 4-0 WEC), who takes a 10-fight win streak and perfect 4-0 WEC record into next month's WEC 52 meeting with Erik Koch (10-1 MMA, 2-1 WEC).

Oh my god..... This is fantastic news. With a lackluster main event having Aldo on the card is GUARANTEED excitement, not to mention it will help promote Aldo to the causal fans who somehow never heard of the guy. Him alone will make the PPV worth buying, and is a very good guy to have on a card that was rather lackluster after Carwin dropped out. I cannot wait.

Yep, I just posted in the other thread about this and this news makes me so happy especially since Jose Aldo being on UFC 125 already makes it worth watching. Dana claimed that Maynard/Edgar could be a draw, well I think he just ensured it, but not because of those two. Aldo is such an exciting fighter and I agree with Dana. Aldo could be a massive star in the world of MMA and should take full advantage of the UFC and its media. I can't wait to see Aldo fight in the UFC, January 1, 2011 cannot come soon enough.

UFC Quick Quote: Chris Lytle wants Carlos Condit
by Fernando Quiles Jr. on Oct 28, 2010 1:25 PM EDT

"Even before he fought, I said basically I want to fight a top contender and a good, exciting fighter. I wanted to fight the winner of the Condit-[Dan] Hardy fight. After seeing Carlos knock Hardy out, it made me want it even more. He's looking really good right now, beating good people and he's a really exciting fighter. That's what I'm looking for."

Chris Lytle is interested in facing former WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit (via MMA Fighting). "Lights Out" is on a four fight winning streak. Most recently, Lytle defeated Matt Serra by unanimous decision at UFC 119, picking him apart in the standup. Condit is coming off a devastating knockout victory over former number one contender Dan Hardy in the first round at UFC 120. What do you think? Will "Lights Out" and the "Natural Born Killer" lock horns in the near future?

Source MMAnews.

I hope this match happens. There is no doubt that they would have fight of the night, they are great entertaining fighters that bring their all with them, they're also both riding on a winning streaker and a fight that would move either fighter into the Top 10.

A fight pitting two of the top up-and-comers at 205 pounds is now official for UFC 126 on Feb.5 in Las Vegas, as Jon Jones will lock horns with Ryan Bader.

Though news of the matchup has been reported for several weeks, the UFC confirmed it Thursday on its "Ultimate Insider" online program. The card's main event is tentatively scheduled to be a middleweight title fight between champion Anderson Silva and challenger Vitor Belfort.

Bader -- the light heavyweight winner on Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter" -- is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 119 in September. The win moved Bader to 5-0 in the UFC and was his third decision win in his last four fights. He was a collegiate All-American wrestler at Arizona State University before making his professional MMA debut in March 2007. Bader -- who is perfect in 12 professional mixed martial arts fights -- has wins over Keith Jardine, Eric Schafer, Vinny Magalhaes and Carmelo Marrero on his résumé.

Jones' most recent victory came in August at UFC Live 2, where he needed only 1:52 to stop veteran Vladimir Matyushenko. The Jackson's Mixed Martial Arts phenom has nine finishes among his 11 professional victories and is 5-1 during his time in the Octagon. Along with Matyushenko, Jones owns wins over Stephan Bonnar, Andre Gusmao, Jake O'Brien and Brandon Vera. The lone loss on his record is a controversial one, as he was disqualified in his fight with Matt Hamill at “The Ultimate Fighter 10” Finale in December for landing several illegal, fight-ending elbows to Hamill's face.

Awesome fight that I have wanted to see for some time now. Both guys are quiuckly moving up the UFC Light Heavyweight ranks and are exciting fighters. I have been a fan of Bones since his debut at UFC 87 and Bader I liked on The Ultimate Fighter. This will be a good test for both guys and probably put either man one win away from a shot at the title.

Chris Lytle vs. Carlos Condit - Great fight. Definitely wouldn't mind if this ended up being a #1 Contendership fight for the Welterweight Title. (for the winner of Shields vs. GSP/Koscheck, of course). Fuck Fitch. I'd say both of these guys are more deserving than him. Let's hope it happens and that Fitch gets screwed by the pooch again. :D

Jon Jones vs. Ryan Bader - Not surprising at all. Bader will be exposed as the mediocre fighter he truly is. Jon Jones should absolutely dominate. I fully expect a 1st Round TKO in this one.

A few more fights announced,

Kenny Florian vs. Evan Dunham at UFC FN23: Fight for the Troops 2 - I like the match up, a win here for Dunham and it moves right near the top of the Lightweight division. If the fight stays standing Ken-Flo has the edge, but as we just saw in Dunham's last fight, he can stand and bang. If it goes to the ground Dunham has the advantage with his wrestling skills, as we seen in Ken-Flo's last fight with Maynard he was just controlled on the ground.

Jon Fitch vs. Jake Ellenberger at UFC 126 - I could care less about this match up. Since I think the real match up should be Fitch vs. Condit. Ellenberger has looked real good his last two fights, since losing a decision to Condit. Fitch hasn't lost since a title fight in 08 to GSP, got screwed by Dana for a rematch with GSP in favor for Shields, I have to agree with what either Armbar or JMT said, saying Fitch hasn't really done nothing different to earn a title shot, true he has won all his fights since the loss, but it's just the same old shit with him. Fitch should be able to work his game and win against Ellenberger in his normal fashion.

Matt Mitrione vs. Tim Hague at UFC FN 23: Fight for the Troops 2 - We all know Hague, as he was on the losing end of the fastest KO in UFC history. This is his third crack in the UFC, and probably his last as I see Mitrione being able to win this fight by a decision, as long as he fights like he did against Beltran.

Kenny Florian vs. Evan Dunham - Man, I really hope Dunham pulls this one off. He's a talented motherfucker and very deserving to be with the top elite of the Lightweight Division. And Florian is not. Florian has all the talent in the World, but the guy chokes when in a huge fight. His performance against Maynard was just absolutely pathetic. That was his shot to fight in his hometown, and then get a title shot against someone he can easily beat, and he fucked it up. Plus, Florian's attitude has always rubbed me the wrong way, so I don't feel an ounce bit of sorry for him whenever he does choke. Lets hope he chokes here and becomes irrelevant once more, while Dunham gets elevated.

Jon Fitch vs. Jake Ellenberger - This could end up being Fitch's 2nd most entertaining fight of all time. The 1st most entertaining was of course against GSP, since Fitch got his ass beat all 5 rounds, and I have a feeling Ellenberger might be able to give him a similar beating for 3 rounds. Ellenberger is a tremendous wrestler, and easily the toughest wrestler Fitch has had to face outside of GSP. Let's hope he can neglect Fitch's takedowns and take that motherfucker right out of the Welterweight Title picture. :D

Matt Mitrione vs. Tim Hague - Mitrione will dominate. Hopefully after this we can start seeing Mitrione against legit competition. I'm curious to see what he really has to offer.

Another significant fight has been added to the Zuffa’s Super Bowl weekend event, as former World Extreme Cagefighting bantamweight king Miguel Torres (Pictured) will take on Antonio Banuelos at UFC 126 on Feb. 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. It will mark the first UFC appearance by the former WEC competitors.

The UFC announced last week that it would absorb its sister promotion, along with all WEC talent. Heavy.com was first to report the Torres-Banuelos matchup; Sherdog is awaiting confirmation of the bout from sources close to the negotiations.

Torres is the former 135-pound champion of the WEC. A dominant titleholder, the mullet-sporting Chicagoan went undefeated in his first five fights in the organization, including three successful title defenses. Two of those defenses earned Torres “Fight of the Night” honors. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt had racked up an impressive 37-1 record before falling to hard-punching wrestler Brian Bowles at WEC 42 in 2009. Torres failed to get back on track in his next fight, losing by guillotine choke to Team Alpha Male standout Joseph Benavidez at WEC 47, marking the first time the 29-year-old had dropped back-to-back fights in his decade-long career. After making a change in his training and heading north to Quebec’s Tristar Gym, Torres rebounded strong, finishing a game Charlie Valencia at WEC 51 and reinserting himself into the title conversation.

Banuelos is another experienced bantamweight, holding 18 career victories. Trained by John Hackleman, Banuelos recovered from an April loss to Scott Jorgensen by defeating Chad George at WEC 51. Known as a precision fighter, The Pit product owns more than half of his wins by decision. Prior to his WEC 51 defeat, Banuelos had won three straight fights in the WEC, including a split decision victory over rival Jorgensen at WEC 41. The Californian’s WEC career extends all the way back to WEC 5, long before Zuffa’s acquisition of the promotion.

UFC 126 will be headlined by an anticipated middleweight title clash between dominant champion Anderson Silva and a rejuvenated Vitor Belfort. The event will also feature two important light heavyweight matchups: Forest Griffin vs. Rich Franklin and Ryan Bader vs. Jon Jones.

UFC 126 is really starting to come together. If this card can stay in tact I think it could be a very fun night of fights. I am not a big fan of either Miguel Torres or Antonio Banuelos but they are a couple of the WEC's best. Not to mention Torres will bring a nice amount of name recognition with him as well. It should be an entertaining fight and I would not expect it to go to a decision. This is a very solid addition to an already exciting looking UFC 126.

Well since there wasn't a thread for WEC 52, guess we can discuss it here.

It was a decent card, some pretty entertaining fights. Demetrious Johnson just dominated Damacio Page for three rounds until he slapped a Guillotine on Page halfway through the third. Benavidez looked much better in his fight, and won with a Guillotine on his third attempt with it halfway through the second round. Koch won with a nice head kick early in the first. I like to see a rematch with Mendes to determine number one contender for the Featherweight title next for Koch. Swanson vs. Semerzier was just an awesome fight, back and forth action throughout the whole fight, that Swanson won by spilt decision, easily the FOTN. Hopefully they'll book a rematch between these to in the UFC!! Mendes vs. Vazquez was actually quite boring, just Mendes controlling the fight with his wrestling, and Vazquez using rubber guard throughout the whole fight. Faber looked great, controlled Mizugaki along the fence for most of the round, showed some nice striking, and counters. Took Mizugaki's back late in the round and finished it with a RNC. I'm sure the win will put Faber right near the top for a title fight, if not I like to see him fight Brian Bowles next when he is healthy.

Unfortunately I was only able to catch the Urijah Faber/Takeya Mizugaki fight, but regardless... I'm glad I did. Faber looked absolutely SPECTACULAR, and I couldn't be more happy for him. He looks great at 135 and I completely expect him to dominate the division in the UFC much like he did the 145 division in the WEC for those 2/3 years he did.

But yeah... hopefully I can catch the replay or something because I've heard nothing but great things about the show, specifically Cub Swanson vs. Mackens Semerzier. Definitely need to see that one.

Oh, and I went 5-0 on my picks for this show, so hopefully my picks for UFC 122 do just as well. :D

Yea I only saw Faber's fight, and shit was fucking SICK. I love me some Faber, and he looks better than ever. He is going to be a big fighter for the UFC, and is still the poster boy for the WEC. I think winning this fight in such dominating fashion throws him right into a title fight. He is fucking dominate, and I fully expect him to shit on this division. I heard he had a tough cut for this fight, and he looked great. Now imagine him when his body gets more accustomed to the weight cut. He will be a fucking animal.

Jorge Rivera's had a really good week.

Sure, he didn't get to fight Alessio Sakara, but he's had more exposure than he's ever had, and the free newspaper based in Boston, the Metro (which circulates on the subway, which a lot of people take) did a HUGE feature on Rivera this week. He also got his show and win money.

More importantly, he'll get more exposure than he'll ever get a few months from now, as he'll be fighting on the co-main event of UFC 127 against Michael Bisping.

UFC 127 is going to take place in Australia, but it will still be an actual PPV. This is a high profile fight, as Bisping is making waves in the decision. I also am going to call it right now... if Rivera brings his A-Game, and he's been on quite the roll, then I could see him knocking Bisping out.

Bisping has a very suspect chin. He also almost made a huge mistake against Akiyama where he came close to circling into a huge right. Rivera throws bombs. I could conceivably see a huge KO of Bisping taking place.

Former International Fight League welterweight champion Jay Hieron has agreed to an exclusive contract with Bellator Fighting Championships and will take part in the promotion’s Season 4 welterweight tournament. Terms of the deal, announced on Monday, were not disclosed.

Anchored at Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts in Las Vegas, Hieron has rattled off seven consecutive victories. The 34-year-old last appeared under the Strikeforce banner in January, when he defeated fellow UFC veteran Joe Riggs by unanimous decision at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.

“Jay is a fantastic signing for us at 170 pounds,” Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney said in a release. “Jay is a world-class fighter with serious talent. I can’t wait to see him back on national television competing against other top fighters where he belongs. He is a spectacular addition to our upcoming Season 4 welterweight tournament.”

A well-rounded competitor, Hieron owns notable victories against “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 7 semi-finalist Jesse Taylor, 2009 Dream welterweight grand prix finalist Jason High, former Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Delson Heleno and UFC veteran Jake Ellenberger. He joins Sengoku vet Dan Hornbuckle, unbeaten Olympic judoka Rick Hawn, unbeaten prospect Chris Lozano, “Judo” Jim Wallhead, Steve Carl and the fast-rising Brent Weedman in Bellator’s Season 4 welterweight draw.

“It’s just a great fit for me,” Hieron said. “At this point in my career, I want to stay as active as possible, and the tournament format allows me to do that. It’s a great organization, and it’s just the perfect fit.”

Very nice pick up for the next Bellator Welterweight tournament. Jay Hieron is a very solid fighter. I would much rather see him fight Nick Diaz in Strikeforce, seeing as he was the Welterweight champion before Diaz, but this will do. I would have to go out on a limb and say that Hieron has to be the early favorite to win the Bellator season 4 tournament. Maybe he could even get an exciting fight out of Ben Askren.

Idn if this has been posted yet. But I was looking up the new fight cards, and Frankie Edgar is facing the only man to ever beat him the the cage Gray Menard. For people who don't know Gray, Gray was a state champ in Ohio. He also compiled a very impressive wrestling record with what most consider to be the best school in Ohio, let alone the one of the best in the united states. That would be St. Edwards prep school. St. Edwards has a stellar team every year, last year for the first time in 13 years a new state champ prevailed over the St. Edwards team that Grey helped win two overall division 1 state titles with.

Right now looking at Grey's impressive record and his win over Frankie Earlier in their carriers I would give Grey a slight win over Frankie. But also the wild card with Frankie is his ever improving Bjj skills. Any man who can win over the first man to hold a bjj black belt in the united states is nothing to spit at. So really right now this fight is up in the air. This is something I am definitely looking forward to at the start of the new year. Ufc 125 Frankie Edgar vs Gray Menard!

The WEC's final 145-pound champ, Jose Aldo (18-1 MMA, 8-0 WEC), who officially was awarded his new UFC title prior to this past Saturday's UFC 123 event, has suffered an undisclosed injury in training and has been forced to withdraw from a scheduled bout with top contender Josh Grispi (14-1 MMA, 4-0 WEC) .

The two had been expected to meet in the co-main event of "UFC 125: Resolution," which takes place Jan. 1 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today verified Aldo's withdrawal, which was first reported by Heavy.com.

According to ESPN.com's Josh Gross, who posted the news on his official Twitter account, the injury was a "compacted vertebrae (which) caused tingling in both arms" and will force Aldo out of action for "at least a month for therapy."

Currently, officials have not decided how to plug the hole on the card or if Grispi will get a new opponent, sources told MMAjunkie.com.

Aldo, who was installed as a UFC champion following the recent decision to merge the world's largest MMA promotion with its sister company, the WEC, formally was awarded the UFC's first-ever featherweight title this past weekend.

That just sucks Aldo's UFC debut is delayed. At least it isn't to serious for Aldo, where he doesn't need surgery to keep him out even longer. That's now the second time the co-main event has been canceled for UFC 125.

Sources close to Harris informed MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the two-time "Knockout of the Night" winner and former cast member of "The Ultimate Fighter 7" has been released from the world's biggest mixed martial arts promotion.

When contacted by MMAjunkie.com, Harris also confirmed his release but declined to comment on the matter at this time.

Harris has been at the center of controversy after narrowly avoiding a first-round submission loss to Maiquel Falcao at this past weekend's UFC 123 event, which took place at The Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit and aired on pay-per-view.

The opening frame appears to have been cut short by approximately seven seconds due to a timekeeping error, and Harris appeared within a fraction of that of being rendered unconscious by a deep rear-naked choke. But Harris supporters also point to Falcao's refusal to immediately release the choke as a reason "Hurricane" wasn't able to compete effectively in the final two frames.

The pace slowed in the final 10 minutes of the fight, and the fighters were booed throughout the third round for their passivity.

UFC president Dana White was openly critical of both fighters at the evening's post-event press conference. The feedback enraged many Falcao supporters who believe their fighter was robbed of a first-round submission win. Today, White told MMAjunkie.com that the Brazilian contingent could take solace in the face that Falcao would eventually return to the octagon with another chance to prove himself deserving of the tag "UFC fighter."

"Their guy us going to stick around," White said in regards to the angered Falcao supporters. "Gerald Harris isn't."

Harris began his association with the UFC as a member of "The Ultimate Fighter 7." He defeated Mike Marrello to enter the "TUF" house but was then defeated by eventual season winner Amir Sadollah in the very next round.

Harris went on to win six fights outside of the UFC before receiving an official invitation to the promotion following a phone call to White while he was a guest on MMAjunkie.com Radio.

Harris debuted for the UFC in January 2010 with a "Knockout of the Night" win over John Salter. He would go on to notch a TKO win over Mario Miranda, as well as another "Knockout of the Night" win over Dave Branch at July's UFC 116 that received heavy play on ESPN as one of SportsCenter's "Top Plays."

The loss to Falcao snapped an official 10-fight win streak for Harris.

While Harris' release will likely prove unpopular with many MMA fans, White recently explained the promotion's sometimes aggressive roster moves are no different than any other professional sport.

"These are the big-leagues, man," White said. "It's no different than Major League Baseball, no different than the NFL. You perform, or you go away."

"I'd rather have two guys in a dog fight and have a guy lose and keep him around than have a guy who's in the Ultimate Staring Competition for five minutes. Nobody wants to see that [expletive]."

I'm just baffled that they would release him just after one loss in the UFC, especially since all his previous UFC fights were impressive, winning two KOTN awards in 4 fights. Yet keep Tyson Griffin who has lost three in a row and so far Matt Brown. Hopefully Strikeforce will pick this guy up in a hurry, as he would do good in their Middleweight division. I guess with the WEC merge were gonna see a few of these mind boggling releases coming.

I am shocked by the release of Gerald Harris, then again the UFC did the same thing with Eliot Marshall. Harris was being primed for a huge push by the UFC and all of a sudden they just cut him, because of one loss. I find the move to be beyond ridiculous, however Gerald Harris will be a great addition to Strikeforce or Bellator.
