Megaupload Shut Down

Seriously though, a movie about copyright laws being violated and hackers striking back against the man isn't going to produce a trailer this damn good:

"You took away our illegal material! WE'RE COMING FOR YOU!"

Seriously grow up people.

They didn't just take illegal material. There was thousands of legal files stored on that site, and people spent quite a bit of money to have a premium account. Just because there was some illegal material doesn't mean there wasn't legal files as well. No doubt a majority of people used it for illegal file downloading and that's why they're outraged, but all people aren't in that category.

So most of it was illegal, and that was fairly well known. If you paid to be on it, that's their problem not mine. I didn't lose a thing in this.

Never implied that you did, but to say everybody is complaining because they took their illegal files away isn't true. Some people used the site legally and spent money on it.

Ha. Anon. Well played...

I haven't used MegaVideo in a long time. I just torrent everything at this point. Much easier to find material, and I control what happens with my collection.

More along the lines of anonmyous hacking stuff over it. And how legal can it be if someone else is making money off another person's property?

Ummm, can anyone honestly say that MegaUpload WASN'T guilty of piracy?
Unless you have proof Megaupload was the one actively reproducing content without express written consent, AND a jury of 12 citizens say so...yes.

Guilt is a legal term. They've only been charged, not convicted. Wordplay aside, I don't think they were committing piracy, but allowing piracy.

In fact, this may actually be wonderful news. It shows that even without SOPA/PIPA, online piracy can be dealt with, and that SOPA/PIPA are not necessary.
No, it shows what a world with SOPA and PIPA will be like. The difference? Megaupload had servers in America. SOPA addresses servers in other countries which do not hold the same laws as America.

SOPA seeks to actively enforce American laws around the world.

Every pirate website that gets busted prior to SOPA being passed is one more argument against why SOPA is needed, which serves a higher purpose.
That's not how it will be spun by those who support SOPA.
Yet Youtube is guilty of the same things. Only difference is that Youtube has a program that scans videos for copyrighted material.
Not really...

Let's be honest, the government would never attack Youtube or Google for instance because they have to many assets to fight with.
This is the real reason. The difference between Megaupload and Youtube is that Google is a giant in the legal world. More than that, Google controls something like 85% of US Internet searches. The last thing you want to do is piss off the people who can decide what search results your name gets.

That's not it at all. Not one of the people charged in this case are American, from what I've read. Megaupload was not just a website where illegal files were held, I've uploaded plenty of files which do not violate any laws to Megaupload, for one reason or another.

The site was shutdown with ZERO notice. Anybody who had files on there, even if they were legal AND paid for, are not bereft of their files. People who followed the law are being punished because our government doesn't understand the Internet.

They have every right to complain. So I suppose this is an "eye for an eye" response.

I've never agreed with Anonymous. Some people hold him in such high regard it's stupid.

As i've said before with the example of the person who backed up a bunch of files on Megaupload. He wasn't breaking any laws, all his files were legal and he was given no warning that they would be destroyed. Like I said, Megaupload had NO warning to clean up it's act. One fell swoop and the entire site and it's millions of files are all gone. I'm sure he wasn't the only person this happened to.

Don't use me as an opinion barometer on this subject if you have any desire to retain your internet street cred. I am principally in favour of SOPA or something akin to it. But for the fact that the wording of the bill quite so fucking atrocious I would be busy getting into fights all over the internet defending it.

I don't have a problem with those who seek to end piracy. Personally, I feel the music and movie business think it is still the 1960s and don't understand the world we live in, but whatever. I think it's silly that children today cannot watch Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream Speech", which aired on public television, without paying money for it. I have a serious problem with copyright laws as they are written.

With that being said, piracy is still against the law, so I can understand the argument for working to end it. However, like you said, when the proposed solution doesn't even begin to address the real problem, but instead work to deprive people of basic civil liberties and try to control something which shouldn't be controlled by anyone, then I have a serious problem with that as well.

Then don't put them there in the first place. I keep mine here with me so I don't have to worry about something like a site being taken down etc. That's probably not the best way to go, but I'm not about to put them on a site that has so much known illegal activity going on there. It's almost asking to be burned.

I actually do have somewhat of an opinion on this, I was just fucking around.

I view illegal material all the time, be it downloads or streams. I know it's wrong but I sort of have a lenient moral code. That being said, I wouldn't be bothered if I couldn't do it anymore. If they find a way to ban get rid of piracy, kudos to them.

The other parts of the bill are alarming to me though. I read something about a company labeling Craig's List as a rogue site because they have people selling second-hand cables at a lower rate and it would effect their profits. That doesn't seem okay to me.

My quick take on SOPA:

The Admin CP here on Wrestlezone is huge. I mean there must be close to 100 options to go into and each of those probably have a dozen things to mess with minimum. I mess with about 5% of it because that's all I need to use to do most of my work as admin. I don't mess with the rest of it for one simple reason: I have no idea how it works and I'd screw up a lot of stuff if I touched it.

I'm really only worried about mediafire being shut down. I download every album I listen to from that site. It will suck if that site gets taken down because every band I listen to shares their mp3 format songs. I don't give a shit about commercial music getting pirated because I don't listen to a single band that puts out that garbage for pay. The government is taking away everything DIY internet related and it's fucking bullshit.
