John Morrison - Gimmick

The other day on Netflix i was watching the WWE best matches of 2011 DVD. Which featured the John Morrison vs Miz match. And the match was pretty good especially considering that it was on Raw. The match had the big spot with Morrison jumping from the logo and what not. And it got me thinking on the subject of John Morrison. Usually when Morrison is brought up you hear how he never made it to main event status. How he was great athletically but fell short on the mic. He has stated that he will most likely return and also that he has taken acting classes to improve where he lacks. With this being said, how do you think he could get over? When i really broke down John Morrison's character i realized something. What is the need for the flashy attire? The sparkly jacket and tights were originally supposed to get him over as heel. So why does he continue to wear it? I think he needs to return as a whole new John Morrison. He already made the minor change with the facial hair, but i mean everything. Change his flashy attire. Change his "mellow" gimmick i guess you could say. And become a more intense, less flashy Morrison. A John Morrison who is all about getting the job done in the ring.

What do you think Morrison would need to do in order to be considered a main eventer?

Would you change anything about Morrison and his gimmick?

Do you know who John Morrison is modeled after? He's modeled after a famous dead rock star by the name of Jim Morrison of the 60's and 70's psychedelic rock band, The Doors. Morrison was know for his larger than life stage presence, his insane partying, drug using, infidelity, attention drawing, and poetically spoken interviews. The introduction of the original heel John Morrison was the best interpretation of the character of the course of the gimmick. Morrison (Jim) never toned down his rock star act and lived full throttle. Even when he was bearded and fat, the man still created controversy, and is regarded as probably the epitome of what a rock star is. Saying you should tone down a gimmick created from the man who was Jim Morrison is absolutely preposterous and blasphemy. If you tone down the flashiness, the captivating high flying, the eye catching everything that the John Morrison character had, you are essentially ruining the gimmick.

To answer the other question, John Morrison could easily be implemented on the Smackdown main roster right now and fight for a Championship. The biggest thing I'd do is bring him back as a heel. He was super over as a face, but his best mic work came as a heel. He'll still have the in-ring talent, but what he needs to do more than ever is connect with the crowd.

IF John Morrison was to come back, the last thing he needs to do is change his look. His MIC skills are the reason he didn't succeed, not his attire. If you change his attire, then you have to change the gimmick, and you'll have to change or water down his moveset. He is a flashy character, so he has flashy clothes and a flashy entrance to go with his In-Ring style. Granted he does need to ditch the fur coat, everything else has to stay and grow. He's giving this Rockstar character but we have no background ! He needs backstage segments and promo videos to highlight his lifestyle, and I'm not talking about that random video we got that one time of him jumping off of stuff when he was the prince of parkour. I'm talking about show him backstage with multiple divas and give us clips of him at the club. If he's a rockstar he needs to rock out. The whole highlighting his lifestyle will clash with CM Punk's character no matter how you slice, and that's a sure fire way to get a push to the top, if not right in the main event.

I know people say he was supposed to be like the Jim Morrison of the Doors. But then he became the Mart Jannetty of Wrestling. He too was talented, good wrestler, and was outdone by his tag team partner. The only thing is, he was out staged by the Miz and not someone with the skills or talent of HBK. Jannetty too had behind the scene problems. But I’m pretty sure Jennetty would of at least attempted to handle business if the something happened with his g/f.

Anyway, if Morrison came back I would like him comeback totally different. He needs to comeback more aggressive and be dominant. I think maybe like Cody was or a Brian Pillman.

I think that the bulk of the IWC would agree that the best thing about JoMo was his look (I personally thought he was exceptional in-ring, but I'm a sucker for spot monkeys). If he were to change his look, his whole rockstar gimmick would have to go. What would that make him? A white Kofi Kingston? I'm straight, but even I have to admit that the Shaman of Sexy looks good!

If he really develops his mic work, I can see him main-eventing. He has the athletic ability, he has the look, he can get over. But JoMo is probably the best argument that can be made for WWE only really caring about mic skills. Just look at the success the Miz had and he has very little wrestling ability.
