Mustang Sally
Sells seashells by the seashore
The problem is that the "old" CM Punk was someone that was the butt of jokes from some people backstage to the production crew to the WWE brass.
Was he really? If so, he's made an amazing turn-around, especially in view of the notion that Vince McMahon didn't think he was a successful performer. I imagine it's hard to get back in Vince's good graces after he's decided you're not worth promoting.
But I have a question: Did Punk actually get Serena Deeb fired for not adhering to the straight-edge lifestyle when outside the ring? It seems it would take an employee with a lot of power to inflict his wishes on the whole company...... and on one employee in particular.
Did Punk really have the power to do that? That he was held in such disfavor by management seems to suggest he couldn't. I always liked Serena and wondered what (or who) really sealed her fate in WWE.
As to the original topic of this thread, I would say Punk's present personality is a natural progression from his "straight edge" days. Back then, he was the guy who went against the tide.....he told it like it was and said things other people would never say.
If you accept that premise, then what he's doing today merely represents the next logical step in his development.
