Tastycles

Turn Bayley heel
As part of living the gimmick a bit, I have deliberately avoided being around backstage. I've barely spoken to anyone and have had the bare minimum of contact with creative. So it had to be. Black is on the shelf for a while now, so I thought I'd do this to reconnect with the community a bit.

Out of character, obvs, but questions on Black and Tastycles welcomed equally.

Did I do the character justice having him fly off the tron for his for now final match?

I think - Thunder Studd- sounds better than Randy, but I get why you went with Randy. I can't believe you took the Black gimmick so far that you wouldn't talk to us in the forum, that is dedication personified, lol! Love it.

Where was the line between Black and Tastycles during the anti-authority gimmick?

Were you tempted to bring back the Mack?

Not really, no. I like the idea of Daddy Mack, but the character had a very short shelf life. I did a kind of comedy RP that nobody really got once, and I think from there it was the beginning of the end, and I went with the retirement angle.

Mack would be a good manager or backstage interviewer (or preshow panel guy, which I think is how we introduced him in the first place), but I don't think he has much more legs in ring.

Did I do the character justice having him fly off the tron for his for now final match?

Yes, perfect actually. I've been prepared to let the character go for some time, but the character would have never left without losing fairly and squarely. With the loss at Lethal Lottery (which, if I'm completely honest, I wasn't expecting but maybe that's why I lost), I think the writing was on the wall.

It was important he went out in a blaze of glory, but I'm glad it was Cooper that finished him and not the fall, it's a lot cleaner.

If he never comes back, it's a great ending. But my feeling is that he probably will at some point, and it's certainly a lot better than the previous departures of 'injured'.

I struggled on the name, and still don't particularly like it, it could be subject to change.

Garth Black's original pipe bomb made it happen, and at the time I wrote a very short post in the discussion thread saying 'no hard feelings', and then that's basically been it for about two years.

Where was the line between Black and Tastycles during the anti-authority gimmick?

This is a very difficult question to answer.

I owe Creative an awful lot in two ways. When the team was good, it set Black up well. When there was something where I, Tastycles, thought 'that's not how I would do it', it's not hard to turn that into 'they're picking on me' as a character.

Let me try to elaborate.

I think first and foremost I have to say that Tastycles doesn't really care about the outcome of fake fake wrestling. I enjoy writing here mostly, but when I don't, I make an appearance as it's the right thing to do, but I might lose and that's ok. Vee ADZ and the triple threat this cycle are definite examples of that.

It's very galling to lose when you think you've brought your best, but I trust the judgement of creative. Whether deliberately or not, I think I was given lots of outs throughout - Black rarely lost cleanly. Equally, my Gold Rush run was made entertaining for me because it was good RPers and I had to try every round, but it also made it good for Black that he was fighting big names 'unfairly'. This is what I mean by the good side of creative helping me.

I don't care that I was on Ascension every week for 18 months, but it is very easy to turn that into something that would bother a character. Equally when I spent time doing the interview with Shotaro that never got published, that was easy too. These obviously didn't really impact me, Tastycles, but it did make me think 'why?' which Black could then write as 'why me?'.

It's easy to criticise from the outside, and actually there's not much I'd change about the bigger picture around Black's run or the creative team. The 5% of 'this could be improved' that Tastycles thought looking at the shows became the 100% of what Black would talk about.

The very first RP, the one that took me all of about 15 minutes to write is probably the best one I've ever written, and I think most people would agree, was probably the one written with the most truth in it. I do think that Creative do a fantastic job, but I equally think that the fed had been stuck in a loop of stables and characters that were a bit stale being endlessly cycled.

I guess it was difficult to write Black without being a bit of a dick about things, and there were a lot of times where I thought 'I should reign this in, or let them know that I'm not angry' but it would of detracted from what I was trying to do with the character.

The only time that I've been genuinely pissed off is when Black talked about losing to a girl in a super sexist manner backstage. He wouldn't do that, and I think there's far too much of it in the fed. He says as he debuts an overt sexist.

Did you enjoy our feud? What did you like and would could've been improved?

Yes I did.

I like that Cooper has a similar background to Black - been around for ages off and on, but never really been to the top. I think stealing the title isn't something that I would have suggested, but I think it made good sense as something an increasingly exacerbated Black would do.

The referee getting in the way is the sort of thing I mean about keeping Black protected in his defeats. The last man standing match was a good way to end it, too. I think it was about as effective as it could have been, given that the whole thing came and went in 4 shows. That's how it should be too - I'd spent ages with Live Mas and the short, sharp, shock of this and the Blades feud were the right medicine.

On the improvements side, like I said above, losing to Mikey took the wind out of the sails a little bit, and I think the Kingdom Come win was more of a final flicker of the flame rather than the re-ignition, so I think it probably came a bit late - and I really could have done with not having the first title match on the very next show - but I understand why. Like I said, this should have been a short feud, but maybe the last man standing should have happened in isolation.

The fact that Black had lost to Cooper before Kingdom Come was certainly relevant, but the fact he lost a million years ago is probably something that only Black or Cooper themselves would bring up. It was quite important to me- but I don't think it would be to the wider WZCW, lots of people lost to people a long time ago.

But I'm nitpicking, it was good, and it means that Black's 1st return and his, for the moment at least, current departure were defeats to the same man.

The Aftershock match had me so worried.

I can't remember what the exact votes were but if 7 people voted (it's been weird lately with all the changes, never know how many people are voting these days) than it was a 4-3 vote. Super, super close match just like it was at the PPV.

Working with you really made me step up my game even more than I already had. Especially that Aftershock match I figured out what it takes to keep the World Title. I may be 4-0 but it could easily be 2-2 with you having won the title and retained it.

One of my favourite feuds even if it was only a single cycle.

Not a question but 20 points for use of the S Express theme. Perfect wrestling theme for sure.

If Cooper was always going to turn, then I am glad Black didn't win. Black leaves having been in the right all along and if and when he ever comes back, he will be a face, and the feud isn't so stale that you couldn't do it with the allegiances split.

I've been wanting to use it for years. I had about three character ideas, but the theme made me pick this one.

What would Garth Black have made of Barbosa?

I'm not sure this version of Garth Black could exist in a world with Barbosa - he was a reaction to identikit performers, and Barbosa isn't that. Black expressed his respect for Eve Taylor a few times directly because of that, and I suppose it would be the same.

From a Tastylces point of view, which I suppose fuels the above, I think Barbosa is one of the most interesting characters we've ever had, if not the best.

Thanks for that. Barbosa was a lot of fun to write.

I always thought that someone like Garth Black could have been an interesting addition to the chaos of say BarboSHIT or Saxoteur. His (and your) take on what were essentially the 'real-life comicbook' adventures of ridiculous characters could have been amusing.

For some reason, I saw Black as potentially a Narrator type character, recording the latest mess that these lunatics had gotten themselves into and wondering why/how he had been roped into it, only for Garth to eventually snap completely and join up with someone like Dr Zeus to rid WZCW of such colourful/mentally ill characters, only to then prove himself to be as unstable or more so than any of those he was crusading against.

Hey Tasty, I know I'm a bit late to the party. First off, I want to say thanks for the kind words in my stepping down thread.

I know that our feud wasn't the best, most of it I feel was my fault because despite being in the World Title picture those last few PPVs, I was struggling creatively. Anyway, I know that Stormrage was a constant target in Black's rants about authority favorites and special treatment. I would joke to the team at the time that you legit hated me and my character. Do you think you would have gone after anyone who had been a top star at that time or was Mikey just an easy target?

I think it's a bit of both. It was way easier to go after someone on creative, and perhaps that's why I pretty much only did that. Creative have the benefit of having total control over their characters, whereas we don't. The only time it actually bothered me was when Black was derogatory about someone losing to a woman, but it bothers me when any character does that. It's clear that in the WZCW Universe, women are equal in terms of success, so they shouldn't be viewed as weaker. Anyway, I digress.

It's easy to go after Creative's characters because of that advantage - their characters always look stronger because there is the input of their creator at every juncture.

Mikey in particular was interesting because he basically ended up on top for such a long time that he had lots of high profile losses. He still won when it mattered, and for all intents and purposes deserved to be there, but I was fortunate that Mikey became champion without beating the champion and then had to face me.

I don't have any beef with creative at all. The whole Black character came from the fact that I prefer realism, and was trying to present a realistic character, and I don't think the fed was at that point so I went as far that way as I could.

I wanted creative to feel that way because it makes it a lot more real. It's a move from the Vince Russo playbook. Haiku wrote his thread saying how he thought my post was real. I remember listening to Dave's podcast a while back and he said he always felt bad after reading one of my RPs because I was shitting on the hard work. And now you say this. It means I was doing my job properly. Wrestling is about making fake fighting give you real feelings, and that's hard enough in real wrestling. To do it on here was a real challenge, but I think I achieved it, which I'm happy about.

I guess that's a roundabout way of saying Mikey, being handled by the Head of Creative, was in the wrong place at the wrong time to suffer Black's wrath.

Who was your favorite opponent to RP against during this last run with Black? Do have any thoughts on Kagura's latest run? We were semi-final round opponents in the Gold Rush last year.

Thanks.
