Greatest Wrestling Tragedy: Prison Edition

The Roid Rage

Getting Noticed By Management
I noticed in the wrestling section someone made a thread about the biggest or greatest wrestling tragedy ever. While names like the Von Erichs, Benoit, Owen Hart, and Bruiser Brody just to name a few were mentioned, I felt that there were a couple others that were up there, one of which was mentioned but not very heavily discussed.

First and foremost I think the one of if not the greatest wrestling tragedy is none other than Scott Hall. Really. This is a guy who should have been a world champion, was well above average in the ring especially for his size, and had everything it takes to be a great. Unfortunately he also had one thing that has held back many people who never met their potential, drug and alcohol addiction. I see this as the greatest wrestling tragedy because I don't think anyone of the mentioned names had as bright a future as Scott Hall, or the potential to be as big as he had the potential to be.

It didn't start in WCW either, it started as early as his days as Razor Ramon. He had numerous car accidents as a result of being drunk and trying to drive to the next town, and obviously was messing with the drugs as well. It is easy to say that those things probably held him back from world title gold in WWF as much as it has since then. He might not have been as great a technical wrestler as Tom Billington, Owen Hart, Chris Benoit, and Eddie Guerrero. But, he is also much bigger than them which means he's NOT going to be anyways, that's not what he sells, it's his look, his charisma, and his power. Either way he was still a great technician, and he had a look that could never be duplicated. I think that if he had never slipped on the sauce, he could have been bigger than his colleagues in the klique. Unfotunately though, he did and does have those problems and they have held him back for years, and one day when he dies as a result of those problems, that is probably when the rest of you will agree if you don't already.

The next one is a guy I'm sure NONE of you have ever heard of, he was well before most of our times and as far as I know was never a really big time wrestler, but his life was ended shortly and tragically nonetheless.

This guy was actually a friend of my dads long before I was born. His name was "Spike Peterson", you can look him up but won't find much besides his name and date of death. My dad used to tell me stories about him when I was a kid much like he did about Gorgeous George who was one of his favorite wrestlers as a kid. Just for reference sake I should let you know I was raised by my grandparents. My father abandoned my mother and shortly after I was born, then my mother and I were beaten and abused by the man she would marry later after that, eventually putting me in the care of my grandparents. So anytime I mention by dad remember that he was my grandfather actually so he was older than my father would have been. At any rate, he knew I loved wrestling obviously and used to tell me stories about wrestling when he was a kid and how much different it was now.

One of the stories I remeber the most was about this friend of his named Spike Peterson. They called him Spike because he was so strong he could drive a spike through a rail road tie with his bare knuckles, no shit. Apparently one night when he was wrestling, the guy he was wrestling put him in an "Airplane Spin" and dropped him on his neck, he died shortly afterwards in the hospital from the injury. Apparently as my dad told me he was a really good man, and a really good friend to my dad. Nothing happened to the guy who dropped him as it was an accident, but Spike died nonetheless. I guess he was a really good wrestler and was pretty young when he died, and could have possibly had a bright future in the wrestling business. To me that's a pretty big tragedy when someone dies in the ring or from injuries sustained in the ring like Spike did. If you can find any additional info on him please post it, and feel free to continue this discussion here in the prison.

05/??/71 Curtis "Spike" Peterson Fractured neck in a bout with Sam Abraham, dies in Richland Center, WI.

That's about all that I can dig up in the time it took to eat a Hot Pocket. I'd be interested to hear some more about it if there existed more footage of him, but it seems he hadn't had much exposure before the accident. Sad.
