Because you can be Latin American and have very white skin? I have a professor that was born in Cuba and raised in Puerto Rico, and he's whiter than I am. Martin Sheen's real name is Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estévez, but you'd say he's a white guy. Andy Garcia is Cuban, but he plays Italians in films flawlessly.

You, because I, the unassuming, politically correct, world citizen I am, didn't immediately jump to conclusions that your dad is a dark skinned Latino. Instead, I realized that people come in all colors, ethnicities, cultures, and so on.

So, to recap... Me: Acknowledges that Latinos can be black, white or anywhere in between. You and Justin: Most Latinos are dark skinned so we should assume that Latino is synonymous with darker skin.

Here you give valid examples of why you put Latinos into the white category. I can in fact add to these examples because I am very light skinned and mostly assumed to just be Caucasian by most of my peers. My friend Vanessa is in the same boat because, although she is Mexican and her first language was Spanish, she can be misjudged as Caucasian until she speaks (she was a think accent)

I have acknowledged that the individuals are not all dark but they can not be written off as white because white skin is mostly in conjecture with Caucasian and Caucasians are a race that are mostly European in origin.

But these individuals do not look Caucasian and as clear as day of Mexican or South American origin, therefore should not be labeled as white on the basis that they have light skin.

Latinos have a European origin. In fact, they have just as much European origin as Americans and Canadians.

Latinos can be Caucasian though. If they have ancestry that goes back to Europe, they are Caucasian. Latinos can also be black, and they can even be Asian, or any combination of the three. Latino is a "self-identified" race, which means it's not scientifically accurate, but it's something that exists. As such, Latino is much more of a cultural creation than it is a racial one. Because many Latinos are have so many mixed races in them it's hard to pick out which one they officially belong to. Some (like Martin Sheen) are obviously Caucasian, some (like Carlos Delgado) are obviously black, and then some (like Gloria Estefan)are in between.

So, going back to my original point, you can't automatically assume that when you say that your father is Peruvian that I'll assume that he's a mixed race Latino. He could very well be white, which is where the conversation started.

Latino refers to ethnicity, culture, and/or nationality more than it does to race. People make the same mistake when they think "African-American" is a race. It's not. Black is a race, African-American is a nationality.

Edit: Jewish people are another good example of this type of debate, as Judaism is a religion, but being Jewish generally refers to an ethnicity. I consider myself ethnically Jewish, but not religiously.

Don't mess with me with this shit. Debates about race vs. culture vs. ethnicity vs. nationality fascinate me.

I actually just said she's only dated one white guy. I was just using me and my brother's mixed ethnicities as proof. She honestly doesn't even know why she usually dates black or latino guys. I guess she's just more drawn to them or vice versa

Actually, he's one of the first people that comes to mind when I think about black Latinos too. David Ortiz, Hanley Ramirez, and Jose Reyes come to mind, as well.

Delgado was a underrated player, man. He could hit for power and raked in the RBIs, even when he got a little older.

My team isn't doing so hot, but best of luck my man. And Burleson killed me last week in a different league. He scored and I threw a hissy saying since when did Nate Burleson become a starting caliber fantasy player. It was like something out of The League. I do love Burly though.

Looks like my adjustments worked out for me, Freeman ended up with 29 pts. with Flacco sitting on my bench with a lowly 5 measly pts. Fred Jackson gave me 25 pts., 9 pts. more than Bradshaw's 16. I just wish I would've noticed that I had remember to change my defense from StL to GB.

Starting Mike Williams over Lance Moore was just dumb (though wouldn't have been as dumb had he manged to stay in bounds on that last play).

Drew Brees is awesome, fucker had like 37 pts. at halftime, ended up with 43.68. I fucking love that guy... almost as much as I love Rodgers.

I'm currently leading in all 3 of our leagues, hopefully I'm able to hold onto those leads. I'm up 92-88 in the ESPN league, with Marshall & Forte still to go tomorrow night, Megatron still has Megatron. 52 Shades of Clay is leading Brad Samford 165.38-104.82, I still got Gronk & Welker going, he has Marshall & Forte going tomorrow night. How so?

Certainly in the way it has been popularised in America - racially white - is it something of a misnomer, although I think academic circles are moving away from its usage.

A Caucasian is either a) someone from the Caucasus - Georgia, Armenia etc. or b) a member of a group of races that include Iberians, Germanics, Celts, Slavs, Semitics (Jews and Arabs), Iranians, Armenians, Indians and many early native North Africans - many of whom would not be counted as white.

I hate to bring them up but it is a similarly incorrect usage as to when the Nazis used Aryan to mean essentially Germanic peoples when it actually means a far broader group that included many of the peoples that Hitler would have considered inferior - Slavic Poles, Czechs, Bulgarians, Ukrainians, Russians and Indo-Aryans such as Iranians and northern Indians.

I've decided to get into the Assassin's Creed series and try to finish it up before Assassin's Creed 3 comes out. I was watching my roommate play and the game just looks so ridiculously badass, and it's going to be even more badass when you get to kill Benedict Arnold and fuck up Lord North and what not.
