Gamers unite -HQ

Took 38 minutes to hit funding, less than 24 hours to hit all stretch goals.

So my city had their city wide rummage sale today.

I was able to pick up a PS2 Slim with 25 games and 2 controllers for $35. Didn't come with a memory card however, so I ordered a 128 MB one off Ebay, and component cable as well.

I've never owned a PS2 actually. So this will leave just the N64 as a major console I haven't owned.

Finally bought Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes as a reward for completing the semester. On sale on PSN for $10. The main story mission is short but it's so well-made and fun as hell. Gonna try and 100% complete it and all the side missions and get the trophies. Super intense story-wise too. Phantom Pain can't come quick enough and Kojima is a genius. Shame Konami fucked everything up.

Traded in my PS4 for a Wii U last Thursday. Got Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. It's probably one of the best decisions I've ever made. Having a family changes the way you game as the PS4 since I got it last summer basically collected dust besides being used for netflix and any single player games I might have gotten about 5 minutes game time a day.

Doc I've never played a MGS game. I've played the NES Metal Gear though.

WiiU wise the below may be helpful, Jim Jam PM'd me with some questions. Here's the response:

Hey man, so I bought an XBOX One but that doesn't mean that I won't purchase a Wii U. I've got some questions.

Sure thing.

So I know the gamepad is the primary controller but if you don't want to use it, can you use the Wii U Pro Controller as your primary controller and just put the gamepad aside? Not a fan of the gamepad but I do like that if someone is using your TV, you can still play your game on the gamepad.

Most games will use the pro controller, some even a wiimote. I use the pro controller for most, though I do get used to the gamepad (eventually).

Can you explain the online gaming to me? I know you can plug in 4 controllers and have friends over to play. But when it comes to playing with people from all over the world. Like..am I able to play a game with you? Tell me how that works.

Just the same as normal online. You have a Nintendo ID and friends you can play or you can play random matches.

What are you currently playing? And what games do you have right now?

Currently playing Smash Bros and Mario Kart 8. In addition I have:
Nintendo land, need for speed most wanted, Tank Tank Tank (which is awful), Assasins creed 3, Injustice Gods among us, Aplinter cell, Wind Waker HD, Arkham City, New Super Mario U, New SUper Luigi U, DK Country triplical freeze, Hyrule Warriors, New Super Mario 3D land, Wodnerful 101, Sonic all stars racing, AZombi U. I will be getting Lego City, Bayonetta, Rayman and Pikmin.

In addition I have a ton of indie titles athat are fun.

Is your Wii U the 8GB or 32GB version? Do you need to install Wii U games and have the disc inside in order to play it? Or do you just need to have the disc inside and you're able to play it?

You just need the disk inside to play it. I would suggest 8GB but buy an external hard drive as even with 32GB you'll need one eventually.

If 200cc Mario Kart reminded me of anything today, it was of the potential absolute carnage of Rainbow Road.

A couple of the early corners are almost impossible to get round if you do not pick a very precise line at a very precise speed with a certain type of cart.

Brutal stuff.

Picked up a copy of Injustice: Gods Among Us.

It is a nice looking decent fighter that you can clearly see comes from the same guys that have made the most recent Mortal Kombat games. The story is interesting but suffers from being too short, leaving so much of its subplots rushed or not explored at all. For example, what was the point of taking the Joker to One Earth? He didn't do anything to affect the plot. At least they introduced a plot device that explained humans like Harley, Joker and Batman being able to fight Superman and not be punched into a puddle immediately.

I liked the chapter style set up of the main story as it got you to try out most of the characters, although I will say that my enjoyment was soured in the latter chapters by the fact that so many of the big characters - Superman, Wonder Woman - are fucking useless. Give me Deathstroke over either of them.

The fighting itself could get a little button mashy at times but the interaction with the environments was good, but a fighting game without Fatality-style finishing moves seems to be missing something.

I'm currently replaying Injustice. I should have got a GOTY version for the PS3 instead though.

I don't like Injustice because it relies very heavily on the special moves. My friends and I have played it, and nobody ever bothers trying to go for combos because the special moves are just so powerful and more easily usable. I'm sure if we were better at the game we'd find a way to work in the combos, but for amateurs it's easy and safe to stick to the special moves.

Give me Mortal Kombat over Injustice any day. The special moves are still useful, but toned down, but the kombos are what really ties the game together.

Bought myself Ninja Gaiden 3 Razors Edge. I'm considering getting Yaiba:Ninja Gaiden Z as it's only £5. People say it's bad because it's cheesy and repititive.m I can deal with cheese and repitition, is there anything else about it that is particularly bad though?

Mulling it over. I've a question which light Googling hasn't answered: do I have to use the motion controls to aim? Should I so choose, could I use the pro controller exclusively?

You can use pro controller, the default is motion but you can change it. I've got it ordered.

You can get it for less than £9.99, even on consoles, I'm sure. It's basically a distilled version of Far Cry 3 with a coat of neon paint.

And no, you don't need the original.

After some shallow research, maybe you can't get it for cheaper on consoles. Serves you right for not having a gaming PC really.

Ironically I do (or at least it has the capacity to be) but I only use it for emulators and old school games

I'm enjoying Splatoon tremendously when I'm winning and finding it very frustrating when I'm losing, so I suppose it's doing well there.

Positives:
  • The music, particularly the lobby music, is brilliant. DOW. Der-der-der-der-DOW.
  • Love the overall aesthetic.
  • Very satisfying to play.

Negatives:
  • The single player campaign, although I've only played the first three stages, is profoundly unsatisfying.
  • The splatter charger, I think it's called, which is basically a sniper rifle, is a great weapon. I've used it to hold chokepoints, splat opponent after opponent and basically back my team up so they win games. However, because I'm not running around like a headless chicken and covering ground, I end up with fuck all points - even when I win.
  • A real pet peeve of mine: more experienced players get more perks. Not different perks, which I would be fine with, but get more powerful characters than people just starting out, which seems entirely counterintuitive to me.
  • No lobby system for friends.
  • I have to quit out of games to change loadouts. During games I can understand - that's a design choice - but you won't let me switch up between rounds? Fucking really, Nintendo?

I know they have a massive free update planned for single player over the summer. Which is strange as Nintendo usually release games properly finished.

Microsoft is looking to buying Silent Hills...... Rumor isn't exactly substantiated due to it being an "anonymous source" but for it to now be an Xbox exclusive.... would be a death knell to kojima....

Microsoft isn't planning on buying Silent Hills. It was based off a rumor created on a fucking Roosterteeth video.

Konami aren't gonna sell silent hill. It's like one of their 3 still alive IP's.
