Filibuster in the Senate

Good to see that the tax rates aren't going to change. I could give a shit about income taxes, but I still find it fucking ridiculous that we have capital gains taxes and that dividend payments are considered income (save for executives who are compensated in stock, shares shouldn't be taxed at all). Once capital gains and dividend payments are done away with, I could care less if the highest marginal tax bracket is 40%.

I want to know what their endgame is. Is it just to get Obama out in the next election? Really?

I hate to jump in toward the end of this discussion, but I think KB brings up a great question here.

The answer is yes. Sending Obama back to Chicago is the only thing Republican leadership is concerned with right now. The Tea Party people, for the most part, are sincere in what they are complaining about. Most of them believe our President is a socialist. A good number of them believe he wasn't even born in this country. These people have been manipulated by powerful conservatives to "beat the drum" in a battle where they don't even belong.

I believe the richest 2% in this country sat at home in absolute shock during Obama's first two years. Why? Because they watched millions of lower-to-middle class citizens fight the battle for the wealthy, while asking for nothing in return. These Tea Party "Patriots" battled against tax hikes that would not personally effect most of them. Powerful conservatives have done an absolutely amazing job of manipulating the average Joe's out there, they really have...and not for the good of this country.

A non-American has a question...

Just what part of your opponent's body do you have to drop on your knee to perform a Filibuster?

My roommate and I were watching it. He was all "Yeah, way to be!" I just had to tell him, "Dude, no one is going to know he did this. And half of those who do won't think he's doing the right thing. They seem to like tax cuts for the people who make ten times what they make in their lives in a single year."

I hate Seth McFarlane, but he said this on an episode of Bill Maher's show on HBO when asked about the tax cuts (that would most assuredly raise his taxes): "I don't need the money." And every other person on that panel, whom all made over 250,000 dollars, said the exact same thing.

With that said, let's not let the Republicans elect Newt Gingrich to the presidency. Please. Let's just not do it.

Bobby Jindal FTW!

I could see Jindal running. He doesn't scare me as much as some of the other options. Jindal seems like he actually is sane.

Like I said a few pages back, he proved himself competent by handling the gulf situation and Hurricane Gustav. He did an excellent job.

The part I don't understand is why people ever thought Obama would be that type of "take 'em by the horns" leader. He's not LBJ or anything. He's never been. I saw him in Oakland years ago, and while I dug his stuff I just didn't find him the kind of guy to take to the partisan war cause. We keep holding our breathe, waiting for him to make his big push, and it's simply not coming. Not this year, anyway.

I remember learning about filibusters in Civics last year...good times..good times. Civics class > History class

My teacher was awesome. Instead of learning out of a book, he'd talk about it himself for about 3 quarters of the class, then'd give us homework at the end. Oddly, it really worked. I always paid attention, because he would make it interesting. Just the way he'd talk, not sure how to explain it though. It was always easy to get him off topic too though, which would ruin it sometimes.

Your political system makes me glad I don't live in America. Not that democracy works any better in England.
