Favorite non-cartoon 90's show?

The 1-2-3 Killam

Mid-Card Championship Winner
For me it's Boy Meets World, without a doubt. The first two seasons were just fun and filled with family-friendly comedy. The characters were great, the show was unique, and personally...I just hated Saved By the Bell. As the show progressed into the later seasons the characters grew, physically and emotionally and the plots became more serious. I think I remember coming close to the point of tears in the series finale, and there really is no better TV friendship than Corey and Shawn. No better relationship than Corey and Topanga. The only show, in my opinion, that comes close to being better is Friends.

Thoughts on Boy Meets World? Friends?

Thoughts on Boy Meets World? Friends?
I never disliked these shows but I really never got into them either, my fiance loved them and both and thinks that Boy Meets World was one of the best shows from back then. If I had to choose which one I preferred it would be Friends, the times that I did watch it I thought it was really funny(especially Lisa Kudrow) but I never became a real fan who watched often.

What was your favorite non-cartoon 90's show?
This is a really tough one, several shows come to mind like Raw, Full House, Family Matters and Walker Texas Ranger. Obviously I watched Raw every week being a wrestling fan, and Full House & Family Matters were shows that I watched because of my family. Walker was the one that was my show, I thought Chuck Norris was the coolest guy in the world and I was as big a fan as that show ever had. I loved all the action and I was allowed to watch it despite the "violence" because it taught good morals, which was important to mom. The cast is excellent and I always liked how they would reuse small bad guy characters, I thought it was fun to see them on one episode as someone and return as somebody else. Watching it these days the 90's influence and quality definitely shows and sometimes it's pretty corny but I have great memories from watching this show and I still love it to this day, I wouldnt have every season on DVD if I didn't.

Damn all the shows I can think of started in the 80's so I don't know if they can be called 90's shows. Most of the above mentioned ones were from the 80's first too (full house, family matters) boy meets world and friends were 90's but I hated friends and never even saw boy meets world so I can't say either of those were my favourite. I liked seinfeld but that started in the 80's too.
fresh prince of bell air has to be my stand alone favourite. that show was so funny to me even now if re runs come on I'll still watch it.

Wings was probably my favorite show from the early 90's. In its early years it was one of the funniest shows on television to me, but in the later seasons it went down hill, it was still good but didn't pack the same comedy punch after they wrote Lowell ( Thomas Haden Church) off the show.

As for Friends and Boy Meets World, I liked friends it is a good all around show and it had a hell of a run. Boy meets world I never really got into it that much but from what I did see of it, it was good.

GREAT THREAD IDEA FOR STARTERS.

For me it would easily be In Living Color. I absolutely loved that show and so did my parents even who were really uptight conservative Christian types, which surprised me all the time that they liked this show. There were all kinds of great re-occurring sketches they did that I always looked forward to, some of the crazy random ones that reflected the issues of the time, their music video spoofs, and I even liked the dance segments and hip hop performances at the end of the show. There was always something for everyone to like on In Living Color and I think that was part of their genius. They knew how to appeal to everyone AND the core audience that they built the show from. I thought it only got better as it went on too.

FYI, In Living Color IS COMING BACK. Yep, In Living Color for the 2000's is on the way. Since Mad TV has been gone for some time now, Fox is wanting to bring a sketch comedy show back to it's network and they tapped Keenan Ivory Wayans to see if he would be interested in re-creating the show for a single season to see if it will work again, and if the first season goes well they are going to keep it as a mainstay on the Fox network. So, my and possibly some of you's favorite as well of the 90's is coming to the new millennium after all these years. Get ready folks.

(Waiting for Seinfeld to be mentioned)

Oh man, Fresh Prince...such a fantastic show! In Living Color is also up there on my list, even though it spans back into the 80s (did it actually run in the 90s?).
Just for nostalgia's sake, I also watched Legend of the Hidden Temple like nobody's business when I was growing up...

Spin City is another favorite of mine, too.

Boy Meets World was a real favorite of mine years ago, and this show was a huge part of my childhood. I would never miss an episode as a kid, and this show always provided a fun watch for me. The writing was pretty solid, and the cast did have some great chemistry, and Boy Meets World did such a great job of developing all of the main characters. You could really feel the development and growth of Topanga, Cory, Shawn, and Eric, because this show chronicles their ups and downs throughout life. You can actually see all of the changes, as they become young adults. Cory and Topanga's relationship suffered some bumps in the road, but everything ended on a positive note.

Boy Meets World was a phenomenal TV series. This show could be humorous, emotional, and dramatic. Boy Meets World is one of my all time favorites, and I always watch the reruns, when I get a chance.

As far as Friends goes, I never payed too much attention to that show. I'm familiar with the characters and the actors, but I could never get into this. Friends wasn't bad at all, but this show never did anything for me.

What was your favorite non-cartoon 90's show?

The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air easily.

I guess I've always been a big fan of Will Smith. I enjoyed his rap music as a kid, I would always watch his movies, and I LOVED this show. The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air always provided plenty of laughs for me, and Will Smith was hilarious. This writing for this show was solid, the rest of the cast was excellent, and the change of Vivians didn't hurt anything at all. I enjoyed the arguments between Will and Phillip Banks (Uncle Phil), Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton) could always give Will some strong competition for the most laughs on any episode, and Karyn Parsons was very believable, as the spoiled and ditzy daughter in the family. The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air was a funny show, but this show could also feature some sad and serious moments. Will learning the truth about his deadbeat father, Uncle Phil's heart attack, and Will's shooting would be some prime examples.

I will always love The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, and I can watch the reruns over and over again. Oh, and this show had to have one of the best intros ever:

The Fresh Prince has to win this hands down for me but I seem to remember finding Home Improvement quite funny back in the day lol X-Files was all the rage when I was at school, which would therefore make that the nineties, Im getting all nosatalgic now!

Does anyone remember Ned and Stacey? I would be tears some episodes from laughing so much!

Spin City, hands down. I've always loved this show, and it has been majorly underrated since its beginning. Bill Lawrence's best work to date, I know most people love Scrubs, but Spin City was Scrubs in the arena before Scrubs had ever even been thought of. Michael J. Fox is amazing on the show and should have won awards. The cast in general was amazing, with comedian heavyweight Alan Ruck, Richard Kind, Michael Boatman, and Barry Bostwick helping it along. And, a young Connie Britton got her start. Spin City was a great satire of American government, while also being incredibly touching and serious at times.

Other favorites go to Fresh Prince, Saved by the Bell, and Drew Carey Show.

Fun shows that appealed to completely different genres. I was certainly a Boy Meets World fan as a kid, as I could identify with the characters and their plights. Each episode mixed humor and mischief while throwing in a moralistic theme aimed at teenagers. Some were more light-hearted such as the importance of friendship, while others focused on family issues and pre-marital sex. It was a fun show with well-defined characters in Corey, Shawn, and Topanga as the leads. It was a nice part of ABC's TGIF lineup along with shows such as Step by Step which were a staple of my childhood. I NEVER missed Boy Meets World during its near ten year run.

As for Friends, I never really got into the show. It was a group of selfish friends who never learned from their mistakes and carried a "Better Then You" attitude in general, and there was never really any consequences for their actions. I got roped into watching the show with a girl I dated for two years in the early 2000's when I bought her the DVD'd for her birthday because it was her favorite show, but i never truly got into it. It fell into the same category of Seinfeld, a glaring ommision here of what was easily the biggest show of the 90's. I'm truly surprised noone has mentioned the show as of yet.

What was your favorite non-cartoon 90's show?

It wasn't a sitcom, but The Practice was easily my favorite show of the 90's. It was a legal drama that spanned the mid-to-late 1990's and early 2000's that focused on a Boston based defense firm that would push the boundaries of the law and ethical practice to get their clients off, guilty or not. Each episode featured an intriguing case where at most times it was uncertain as to whether or not the client they were defending was guilty or not. There were numerous plot twists, sometimes in eacvh episodes, and the show that truly made me fall in love with the mystery/suspense drama. Watching the lawyers of Donnell, Young, Frutt, & Dole struggle with their consciences as they often defended those they knew were guilty made for riveting TV. Even if you haven't heard of the Practice, it was spun-off into Boston Legal, as James Spader and later William Shatner joined the cast in the final season. Just a riveting show that asked the question of how far people are willing to push their morals/ethics to do their jobs, all-the-while providing a WhoDoneIt that left one guessing until the end.

There are a few that come to mind most notably Are You Afraid of the Dark, Fresh Prince, and Boy Meets World

In regards to Boy Meets World I enjoyed that show quite a bit and was one of those 90's shows I've seen every episode of. Sure Corey and Topenga drove the shore but it had some great characters such as Shawn, Eric and Mr. Feeney who probably added to the show more than anyone else on it. As a kid I always wanted a teacher like Mr. Turner and there is something about the show that felt very organic and real. Not my favorite of the 90's but it would be in my top 5.

Seinfeld was by far my favorite 90's TV show that wasn't a cartoon. I find it amazing that most of the stories were literally about nothing, there was no lesson's learned in the show but I can't think of too many better ways to kill half an hour. I still feel it has the best main cast of characters ever concocted on television with Jerry, the dry funny guy, George the sociopathic cheapskate, Elaine the fiery female companion and who can forget my favorite Kramer, the doofus who somehow always gets by without ever working a day in his life, I swear Kramer lives the dream of every man out there, get by, always have money, never work and always has sex, now that's a fantasy if I ever heard one (thanks George for that!).

Who can forget such classic like "The Contest", "The Boyfriend" or "The Soup Nazi", it's one of those shows I can watch 1000's of times and not get sick of watching them. Fresh Prince is a second for me but for the rest of the shows in the 90's all I got to say is "NO SOUP FOR YOU!".

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is probably my favorite. It's was always funny and could be emotinial if it ever needed to. It also kick started Will Smith's acting career, which as we all know turned out very well for him. I wish James Avery and whoever played Geoffry was in some more stuff though., I really liked those actors. Geoffry was hilarious.

This Extended version explains so much. I always thought he took a cab from Philly all the way to California.

Spin City is another favorite of mine, too.

As a huge fan of In Living Color, I can tell you right now not a single episode of it aired in the 1980's. The first episode aired in April of 1990. I own every episode on DVD and this could easily be my answer to the thread topic.

I will also say it's competition for me is Married...With Children. Though it started in the 80's, it went well into the 90's. Not only was this show absolutely hilarious, but it changed family sitcoms forever. Before this show most sitcoms were all lovey-dovey. If they had a problem it was because some child got an F on a test or something. Married...With Children took family dysfunction and made it funny. "Al, what does this toilet have that I don't have?" "A job." hahaha

I loved Boy Meets World. I watched every episode and then when it went to re-runs I watched them on a daily basis each day after school on Disney or ABC. I even had some episodes memorized because I watched it so much. Although until around middle school and 9th grade I was as much of a back row slacker as Shawn and my grades suffered. It was thanks to this show and watching the re-runs of it when I was a little older that I began to appreciate the role teachers play in our lives. Then my grades skyrocketed. Thanks to Feeny, ironic isn't it?

I also wished my teachers were as cool as Turner and that I could date a girl as attractive, nice, and smart as Topanga. My middle and high school teachers mostly sucked although I had some cool college professors that rivaled Turner's character. I never quite met a Topanga until my wife. The onscreen relationship of Cory and Topanga did give me some hope that I could find someone really pretty who'd treat me right. ;)

Other favorites of mine include Salute Your Shorts and Kenan & Kel. There were a good number of non-cartoon shows I liked in the 90's but those three were my top tier.

I never saw Boy Meets World. Was it a nineties Wonder Years?

There were a couple of shows I enjoyed during the nineties, without being a complete addict. These included Friends, the Fresh Prince and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

There was one show I completely adored though and that was Due South, a show created by (now) Hollywood big wig screenwriter Paul Haggis. The odd couple story of a tough Chicago cop and the, seemingly, innocent Mountie (and his deaf wolf) who comes to his city in search of his father's murderer and then stays on at the Canadian consulate. Fish out of water comedy / drama at it's very best and I absolutely loved the music here's a couple of examples)...

The Mountie(s) sings (watch out for the late comedy legend):

And the haunting Sarah McLachlan:

They still have a fanclub today which holds conventions with prominent members of the show, which I'd love to attend one day... and I still say "Thank you kindly".
