Domestic football - spam version

I vaguely recall Liverpool coming within a couple of points of winning the thing last year despite preseason odds of 33:1. But I think the point people are going for regarding predictability is that yes, I can predict the Premier League winner this season with roughly the same accuracy as La Liga.

The difference is that I can also predict who is going to win La Liga in five and ten years. Real or Barca have taken something like 25 of the last 30 seasons. Not only has the English top flight generated twice as many winners in the same time period, but literally no teams have managed to achieve the same kind of dominance.

The Spanish system is literally designed to keep the same two clubs at the top of the pyramid - which is what people are talking about when they call the league dull and uncompetitive.

We can revisit this 'debate' after 5/10 years then and see how the situation is then.

There have been 5 different EPL winners in the Premier League era thus far, with ManU far ahead.
In the same time period, there have been 5 different La Liga winners also, with Barca and Real sharing the majority of them.

That is what has happened and thus, what we can go on such info. at this point in time.

However, I will concede that Barca and Real's dominance in both Domestic and Europe is unhealthy, and as you said, can be a real danger to the league going forward if there aren't some changes to TV deals, etc.

That is something most unbiased Spanish footy fans would admit, no doubt. However, that is the future, and thus, to base an argument on something that 'could' happen doesn't address the issue at hand whatsoever...

Or it could be suggesting the strength and depth of Premier League teams when its teams can challenge for and even win the European competitions and yet not finish in the top four or even top 10? Showing off its superior competiveness...

European performances show that EPL teams have fallen off in recent seasons, and seem to be dropping rather than rising up. Frankly, whichever way you spin it, it makes a mockery of "the standards of the league schtick" that gets bandied about by EPL 'fanatics' the world over.

How does it make a mockery of that thought process if the reason Liverpool and Chelsea can win the Champions League and not finish in the top 4 or Fulham and Boro can get to Euro finals and not make the top 10 was because the league was more competitive?

If anything, that spin on things proved that "schtick" correct.

The English premier league is the most competitive league from top to bottom. This is down to the more physical style of the game in England. However, that style does not translate across to Europe and thus are caught out by the more technical styles of Spain, Germany, etc. This is why the English national side is dog shit currently as well. END OF.

Christ. Football didn't start in 1992.

Spain and Germany have had 2 different European Cup winners in history. England has had 3 in the last 10 years.

Man United won the league pretty easily two years ago and finished 7th last year. The last time Real Madrid finished outside the top 6 was in 1977. The last time it happened to Barcelona was in 1942. There's nobody in England with a record beyond the mid nineties.

As for the attractive football thing - lol. The most popular and successful English sides ever are the Liverpool teams of the 70s and 80s - famed for pass and move and Man United's 90s and 00s teams who had great counter attacking. Sure there's more goals in Spain but that's because the teams are all shit.

Also, of the teams in the group stages of the champions league since 2004, 100% of the English ones have made the knockout rounds. How many of the others can claim that?

Not true united missed out a couple years back, so have city (and maybe Arsenal did once but i'm not too sure)

I meant all 6 sides have made it to the knockout phase at some point - obviously not everyone every time - Liverpool went out this year. The point is that when comparatively inexperienced and weaker English teams like Spurs get in - they are still competitive, unlike say Betis, Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Deportivo etc. who have all failed.

The final thing I'm going to say on the matter is that despite no English club really setting the world on fire in Europe, this season is the first year that the English league hasn't topped the UEFA country coefficient for the past 7, and it's still not over. So could you argue La Liga is the best league? Right now, maybe. If City go through? Well then the picture changes entirely.

I had a date cancel because she got tickets for the sunderland match. They're getting beat 4-0 and my half time text of "I hope you're enjoying the match, I am" fell on deaf ears.

And that too against Aston Villa! May be this date was never meant to be..

Nah, Sunderland were just shit. He couldn't beat us so he's not good.

You might want to check that info again...

As for the top part:
Since 2004: 6 English Clubs have competed in the UCL Group Stages and as you pointed out, all 6 have made it into the knockout rounds.
During the same period: 12 Spanish Clubs have competed in the UCL Group Stages and 9 of them have made it into the knockout rounds.

Deportivo* made the Semis in 2004 UCL btw.

Going to Swindon next week for FA Vase semi final.

You guys are lucky to have such options to go to. Out here, our footballing system is some amateur bs, and the quality of footy is poor, and even our cricket sucks as well.

The only sporting events worth attending out here in Barbados is the Rallying events. :banghead:

If Barca fail to get the La Liga or UCL title this season, I can see Koemann coming in next season from Southampton. He has surely rebuilt his reputation in the past couple of years in thr Dutch league and now at the Saints after being horrible at Valencia.
