Domestic football - spam version

According to a research done on 54,000 interviewee across 39 countries on club or clubs they follow, Manchester United apparently has an estimated 659 million supporters or 1/10 of world population.

My initial reaction was to laugh at the result but then I realized it might have some merit because 1 out of 10 person on almost every english football sites put manchester united as their teams...

Then I began to laugh at the research firm.

1: I think Brendan Rodgers will be okay for Liverpool. He should be able to make them more tactically sound, helping them regain a foothold in the race for the top four.

2: £180,000 a week is shocking, but whatever. I remember when that would've been considered disgraceful.

3: AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Jordan Henderson. Jagielka was a solid replacement for Barry, but Henderson replacing Lampard would be horrific. And now that I've said that he'll end up being hugely influential in winning the tournament...

I know it usually works out that way, but no amount of negative comments just begging to be proved wrong will remove Jordan Henderson's arse from the substitutes bench. So go nuts.

Jordan Henderson has been fucking shit all season. It says something about English football when someone like that has been even in with a sniff of the full squad for a major championship.

An absolute joke.

Next he'll be calling up Martin Kelly.

Ha. This England squad is becoming farcical to the point where I've almost stopped caring about it. I'm so hoping for Terry to be ruled out next, just so Hodgson has to go to Richards or Ferdinand with his tail between his legs.

Richards said he wouldn't be a back up, that's why he isn't going. Henderson is a joke, but again, I'm not sure who I'd take in his place if Carrick is going to be William Largepenis about the situation and Scholes is retired. Who could they realistically take over Henderson? Danny Murphy? Paul Gascoigne?

People are reading too much into the squad being bad. I'm right now watching the Euro 96 semi final on ESPN classic (Kuntz has just equalised!), and England have Stuart Pearce, aged 34 and right winger Darren Anderton as the starting full backs, and Gareth Southgate is at centre half. On the bench England have luminaries like Steve Howey and Steve Stone.

The squad isn't that bad, and there's certainly nobody significantly better who's not going for any reason other than injury, or having bruised egos.

Steve Howey finished 2nd in the league that season and was first choice. Kelly is a reserve and 8th.

Those players were far better than they've being made out to be. Infact that entire first team were better than what England will be putting out this summer.

The likely England starting line up vs. France is "now", Euro 96 semi final lineup is "then", better player in my eyes bolded. I'm comparing similar players, not using literal squad numbers.

Now - Then
1. Hart - Seaman
2. Johnson - Anderton
3. Cole - Pearce
4. Gerrard - Gascoigne
5. Terry - Adams
6. Lescott - Southgate
7. Walcott - McManaman
8. Parker - Ince
9. Carroll - Shearer
10. Young - Sheringham
11. Downing - Platt

6-5 to Euro 96. If you look at the rest of the squad, it's much the same story:

12. Kelly - G Neville
13. Green - Walker
14. Baines - P Neville
15. Jones - Campbell
16. Jagielka - Howey
17. Milner - Barmby
18. Henderson - Redknapp
19. Oxlade-Chamberlain - Stone
20. Rooney - Ferdinand
21. Defoe- Fowler
22. Butland - Flowers
23. Welbeck - Only 22

12-10 to Euro 96, and I think some of those are borderline anyway (e.g. Jagielka - Howey)

It's worse, but it's hardly abysmal in comparison.

Tony Adams was a better defender than John Terry and I'd hate to have to live on the difference between Seaman and Hart.

If you give any one a choice between the Euro 96 side and the current one, they'd pick the 96 side, most would pick that squad over the "golden generation," while todays squad has one or two technically better players, apart from the back line (England has always had good defenders) the difference is still colossal between them and more importantly those men generally produced the goods. Alan Shearer won golden boots at the tournaments he went to, Rooney doesnt even get on the scoresheet.

Of course, and I've forgotten the word now, its that thing where you look better on the past because its gone by and you have forgotten all the shit that came with it and can only remember the good, yeah that, that plays a part obviously, but at least the England teams of old went down swinging.

Rose tinted glasses. That works both ways though.

Personally I'm still hoping for Lukaku to come good. Whole world of potential there.

Same here, really hoping he doesn't go out on loan because knowing Chelsea he may not come back. I'd put him in ahead of Sturridge.

Tony Adams was a better defender than John Terry

... What?

A few other things:
  • Bosingwa and Kalou getting released is awesome. Bosingwa especially.
  • Eden Hazard will prove his worth.
  • France are going to chew up England and spit them back out.
  • Just watched some of Premier League Years, I miss Joe Cole.
  • Don't think Rodgers appointment at Liverpool is as risky as some people are making it out to be.

United look to have Dortmund's Shinji Kagawa signed up and perhaps poised to sign Baines from Everton too. 2 good (potential) signings, and I'm glad that at long last we've brought in a central player.

Cleverley was unlucky with injuries, Anderson can go, Carrick is still a bit inconsistent but not as bad as people make out, Giggs and Scholes are still class but only getting older. Fletcher was a huge miss last season though which seemed to get overlooked. Even the mighty Jones could stake a claim for a midfield position as he's yet to find his definitive position due to his versatility.

Sigurdsson is probably going to Liverpool, quite happy about that. Rodgers is not a huge risk to me, I think Martinez was a bigger risk. Hell, having Dalglish back was a risk in itself driven by emotion. This is far more calculated, a decision made by the head rather than the heart (ie not Rafa).

Sigurdsson is quality but why do they need another cm. They need wingers and another striker. It will be awkward for Rodgers to see how he fits in Carroll into his team. I would play him but I doubt he will.

We are lacking in midfield. We missed Lucas terribly, Spearing and Adam aren't good enough and Gerrards engine is shot.
