Domestic football - spam version

Didn't you do your PhD on the late Roman Empire? (I want to say something about their recruiting practices, but I'm probably wrong) Seems to be a dit of disconnect between your (potential) Post-Doc work and your doctorate.

But anyway, best of luck Barbosa, any job where you're paid to do what you love is a good one.

Well done you for remembering/finding this. Now, go and lie down in a darkened room.

It definitely is something of a disconnect but who is there out there that is really qualified to research the history of football?

I think that as a football fan with the skills of historical research, I stand about as good a chance as many.

The fuck are Man U expected to win the title without Michael Owen? Game over.

Micah Richards admitted he withdrew from the England Euro 2012 squad after Roy Hodgson called him & said "I want to wank you higher than the other white backs..."

Not sure I put much stock in how serious this Martinez approach is. He's good but I reckon he needs another club first, just like AVB.

Why is Martinez even in contention?

He has led Wigan to 16th twice, and this season he really went to town and led them to 15th.

Their previous manager led them to 14th, and then 11th. And it was Steve fucking Bruce.

When Hodgson got the job, it was because he'd turned a club's fortune around, and had them punching above their weight getting into European finals and finishing in 7th place. In his entire tenure Wigan under Martinez have only finished above promoted teams, West Ham, Wolves, Hull, Administration's Portsmouth, Steve Kean's Blackburn and the worst Aston Villa team for about 120 years.

I'm certain it's a smokescreen. That may be my pathetic desperation though. I stand by my claim that Rafa and AVB are better and more suitable candidates ahead of him and that this probably wont lead anywhere.

I like Martinez, I just don't want him managing my club is all. I admire his rise to where he is and brutal honesty during press conferences. But he shouldn't be Liverpool manager especially with the fans not all that behind him being appointed despite it only being speculation and an approach.

Rafa is the one most seem to be backing.

I watch Wigan most weeks, as a neutral fan who is partial to them - and let me tell you, Wigan have players nowhere near good enough to play in the Premier League in massive parts of their squad.

Al Habsi, Figueroa, Moses and James McCarthy are the only players who would get into a decent PL side (ie. someone like Fulham). His job this season has taken huge balls and it's something called 'the long game' - perhaps something that Liverpool fans have given up on in the past few years.

Wigan deal with the same problem of having to rebuild the team ever year due to a combination of their best player leaving and having no money to spend whilst teams around them all usually spend to try and not be in the relegation battle again.

The only way they were going to stay up was the way they did - By practising the Martinez style and sticking with it. They've got small players, so no chance of long balling it or bullying themselves through games.

If you actually watched Wigan in the first half of the season, they were very good in most games for the quality of player they had, and you saw progression through the season.

A side without the players to stay up managed to by finally seeing the fruits of their labour, all of which the manager orchestrated by getting fairly poor players (Gary Caldwell, Beausejour, Maloney, Di Santo) to understand his system and style of play well enough. In the end, they were beating top sides for fun. But once the likes of McCarthy and Moses move on, they're back at square one, and this is why they have to struggle for large parts every season.

He wouldn't have that problem at Liverpool imo, they have players far greater than Wigan, not world class, but competent, solid Premier League players, as long as they listened, they should do alright. Furthermore, Liverpool can hold onto a good number of top players, and also have resources to replace them if they do leave.

I would make a further case, but frankly, I'm not arsed about Liverpool, I'd rather he stayed at Wigan, he's loved there. It's hugely unfair criticism of him I'm seeing though.

Above I saw that he shouldn't be appointed because the fans won't take to him. Christ alive, and people talk about Player Power? Fans are soft as ***** these days. I'm a Newcastle fan, and even though Mike Ashley is a very jowly man with questionable morals, we've seen first hand the merit in not listening to fans on these matters, and Liverpool fans would be pretty happy if next season they played as Newcastle have all season, especially considering you could do it with a much bigger squad.

Very few who watch Wigan and Liverpool would say it's likely he'd fail there. I would ask how many of the Liverpool fans clamoring for Klopp or another 'name' have really watched a lot of Dortmund, but I doubt it's a lot. Klopp would be a good choice (other 'names' wouldn't), but it's strange how fans pass judgement on who their club should get based on very little in depth knowledge of these people.

Fair point about him overachieving with a shit squad but who bough those players? They've gotten lots of money over the years from selling Palacios, Valencia and Nzogbia and yet he's gone and bought duds like Conor Sammon, the two Caldwells and Di santo. And people say Daglish was bad in the transfer market.

Say who signed Steven for Newcastle?

What a twat. Hodgson made the right choice.

On Martinez, I understand what you're saying, but there's a few problems:

1) Most of the teams that have ever finished beneath Wigan under Martinez had worse squads. You could make a case for Villa and QPR this season, but the relegated teams were all either arse or injury ravaged.

2) He bought those shit players you're describing. Most of his big signings have been total flops - Jason Scotland, and the frankly diabolical Mauro Boselli, who is Wigan's record signing and is currently on loan in Argentina having netted an impressive 1 goal.

3) Steve Bruce, who nobody would claim to be a great manager, consistently did better with Wigan than Martinez has. As did web-cam's Paul Jewell.

I'm not a deluded Liverpool fan - I accepted Hodgson - and I'm not expecting Klopp or Guardiola or even Capello. Just someone who has experience beyond finishing 16th with the 16th best squad in the league.

Martinez might be the real deal, but if the owners are serious about Champions League football, then let him prove himself at a slightly higher level first. If he'd gone to Villa last year and made a decent crack of it, great, but he didn't, he stayed at Wigan and played Franco di Santo.

I have zero time for Villas-Boas, but I'd much prefer him.

It seems Villa are interested in speaking to Solksjaer about their management position. As much as I'd love to see him back, I'd rather him have a few more seasons in charge of Molde and develop as a manager rather than keep hopping about.

Some Tottenham fans have decided to don lederhosen outfits in support of Bayern Munich during Saturday's Champions League final. A Chelsea win would deprive Spurs of a Champions League place next season.

Anyone else find that funny?

Jews dressing up like Germans, no?

Anyway, big time looking forward to the playoff final this avo. Less so to the Champions League, but it will be good I'm sure.
