It seems that the IWC's opinion about McMahon's effectiveness will always be divided. Some folks say he knows what he's doing; others insist he doesn't. Fine.
One of the problems in the whole equation stems from the Attitude Era. People look at the all-too-brief TV rating at it's apex (8.5?) and seem to presume that anything short of it means that WWE is now a failure.....and has been since that time.
Vince knows better. He's aware that those days were a once-in-a-lifetime blend of circumstances that will probably never be repeated. In other words, it was a time when it was considered "cool" to watch wrestling even if you weren't a wrestling fan. WWE managed to (briefly) capture that large group of people who were anxious to identify with any large mass movement and whose very lives consist of "going along with the crowd." At that time, the "crowd" was watching Stone Cold Steve Austin & friends, so that's what they were going to do, too.
Vince knew he wasn't going to hold onto these people forever; they'd soon find another trend to latch onto. He knew that what he needed to do was hold onto the true wrestling fans......and he's done that. The TV ratings in the 3.0 to 4.0 range are his audience and he's done a masterful job of keeping those people in the fold, even the ones who claim to detest everything he's doing.
-Could Vince curb his rage a little?.....Sure, and he probably should.
-Does he listen to the group of talented people he's hired to advise him?....It's debatable. From what we read, he seems to spend a lot of time screaming at them, but I'd like to think he still considers their input before making his own decision. Or, maybe he wants a group of yes-men around him, echoing his opinions. Who knows?
No, I don't think McMahon has lost his touch, but at his age, it would sure be interesting to see what his daughter and son-in-law could do with the whole mess if he retired.
C'mon, Triple H! .....Pedigree the chairman and run with the ball.
