Does John Morrison need to drop the "Doors" gimmick to be a success?

John Morrison will be the champ one day when guys like Shelton Benjamin and Matt Hardy are filling the same roles that people like Golddust and William Regal are.

Before I proceed, let me say that I like all 4 of these guys used to pull for Golddust even when he was doing the electrocution/Tourette's gimmick and I think Regal should have put the 'roids back in the box (say that in a horrible Nicholas Cage Southern accent lol). Regal screwed the pooch when he got caught violating the Wellness Policy and lost his last chance at a legitimate push before becoming what I call the "7 minute guy". And as far as Matt and Shelton are concerned, I wanna pull for Matt. Really I do but he never gets a gimmick that fits. It always feels like Keanu Reeves in "The Matrix". Sure he did a mediocre job in his role, but really, they could find something better for him. And Shelton Bejamin. One of the Top 5 best athletes in the business right now. I don't know if he is getting served the same Kool Aid as Matt but it is getting to that point where you know he doesn't have a main event future.

Back on topic. Morrison doesn't need to drop the Doors gimmick if he could just work it a little more. Emphasize on the rock star aspect and make it a little more modern, but don't go as far as those guys in TNA and bring out Guitar Hero controllers. Just give him more of a Ric Flair-esque gimmick and see if he can work it. But in the PG world, he may be doomed to change his gimmick to a Justin Timberlake role with Melina as a back up dancer because that always goes over so well. Just ask DJ Gabriel.

I absolutley love the Jim Morrison gimmick. But I just don't think it's gonna work. Half the kids don't know who Jim Morrison or The Doors are and never will unlessthey see the movie playing on TV one day, find a copy of No One Here Gets Out Alive while browsing at their local library, or they start hanging out with stoners. I think that it could work if WWE found some guys who looked like the other three doors, put them with Morrison, and they would do a thing like 3 Count and they could be called, idk, The Open Doors? And provide background on the original Doors. I think that would work. And it could be the new Evolution. World Champion, U.S. Champion, and Tag Champs. But other than that, he should drop it, as much as I like it, it won't go over with young kids.

I think the fact that kids won't recognize the Jim Morrison reference is the reason that it works. To kids, he's just like all the other wrestlers in terms of gimmick. Most gimmicks today aren't about a character, but about individuals differentiated by their personalities. Most wrestlers, like, say, Cena, have grown beyond their gimmicks and are merely their own character. I don't think Morrison's handle will harm him.

Plus, it seems clunky for a man in the midst of an apparent mega-push to switch gimmicks right in the middle. Not impossible, but it would seem off.

There seems to be a massive misconception that people don't know who Jim Morrision is...

They are missing the point... the gimmick as a whole is crafted around the late 60's...

The music is Hendrix based (now if Hogan could have Voodoo Child for music, why not Five to One by the Doors for Morrison... listen on youtube, it's perfect...) , the look on the doors and the attitude from the Stones... People may not have seen Jim Morrison but they know about the 60's cos either their parents or grandparents were there and likely rave about it all the time... Every other TV history or recap show is about the 60's... teenagers wear retro clothes and like anything that is "cool".

Cena and Rey are for the little kids... Morrison is for those mid-late teens and oldies, people who don't like to admit they still watch wrestling, but Morrison is "retro" enough to be cool to like... Dad can recognise "Fire" in the theme tune and then tells his kid about the 60s'... Kid finds records...

I truly think a lot of the wrestlers could be main event guys if they got a push. Thing is they never do. Morrision, Benjamin, MVP etc
