Do We Need / Want A Lengthy Title Run ??

I would say that a long title run could and would be a great thing for the WWE. I would also have to agree with a few people in this forum, that CM Punk is the perfect candidate for this lengthy title run.

Let's see; he has been champion already for what two months? And this title reign has already surpassed his first title reign last year. With Punk's inevitable heel turn coming up (unless Hardy doesn't resign, then you never know what can happen) it could be a pefect chance to have the long title reign that I feel the WWE could benefit from.

Think about it. Punk is one of if not the best talent that the WWE has to carry the company in the future. He is on Smackdown so he has plenty of talent to have some pretty damn exciting feuds with. The feud with Hardy is unfolding brilliantly, Punk throwing his straight edge lifestyle into Hardy's face is priceless. I see this as just the beginning of huge things for Punk. A lengthy feud with Morrison or Taker could benefit Punk as well. Hell, if you take the feud with Hardy, throw in decent feuds with Morrison and Taker and you already have a nice 6 or 7 month reign. Then maybe have MVP win the rumble and decide to go back home to Smackdown to exercise his title match for Wrestlemania. Which again, would be great b/c Punk could rip on MVP for his prison stint and all that good stuff. With Punk's outstanding abilities on the mic and MVP's mic skills for that matter, we could see some pretty intense promo's. Punk/MVP could feud during the road to Wrestlemania and we could see this great title reign end with MVP going over Punk at Wrestlemania 26. Punk is solidified as a believable World Champion, and with MVp beating him, it could do nothing but bolster his status as well.

So, by the end of the day. You could develope two Mega Stars as a result of Punk's nearly year long reign as champion.

i would like longer title runs, to me when someone has the title it gives the title more prestige, right now it seems that titles are less prestigous and used just as props

UMMM, the titles are just props. Wrestling isn't real.

Anyway, I think that the only way someone could have a year plus run is if they are a heel. This heel should be the leader of a stable who protects him. This is why Randy Orton's current run should last for quite some time.

I'm pretty sure that he wins at NOC. They abandoned the family part of the angle with HHH, and John Cena is a throw in at this match. That would make four months as champion (minus the week with Batista). After that, it is going to take some time to get someone at that level. I'm pretty sure that Mark Henry is next, and while he might get to main event two PPV's, I don't think he goes over Orton, so now were are at six months. This would be a lengthy reign by today's standards. Orton is the best heel in the business right now. He can keep the crowd booing him through beat downs and cheating for as long as he needs to.

It depends. Yearlong title reigns should be extremely rare and should only go on that long if it's interesting. Really short title reigns (like a day, week, or month long reign) should also be extremely rare and should only happen as a transition or to further a storyline. On average, I think title reigns should fluctuate between 3 months and 9 months.

Lengthy runs in the past can be pretty cool when done well, but I think one reason why it is hard to work now is there is not a GM to have the champion confront or be supported by. Edge's title reigns were supported by Vickie, Stone Cold went against Vince and there have been numerous other situations that involved the title and the GM.

You can create some great rivalries and even help put some people over, including rising stars, but you need someone popular like jeff hardy, but right now CM Punk should have a long run to put him over as a heel. Punk can rival Morrison, Rey and even Undertaker, whom I think should take the title from him for one last long run.

I think the fans would love a long Undertaker run because he is over with the crowds and deserves one last shot with the title.

The length of a title reign isn't nearly as important as the quality of the reign. Someone can hold the title for a year but if all they face is a bunch of lower card guys or main eventers who can't wrestle then their reign will be considered a flop.

With that in mind, a quality reign still needs at least a few months to breath. I'd say at least 3-4 months are needed to make sure a reign has the chance to be great. Let's say Punk wins the World title. If he had great title matches against Jeff Hardy, Edge, Chris Jericho, Rey Mysterio, Undertaker and John Morrison while his reign is still less than half a year long it could still be considered a great title reign. Booking is key. On the flip side, as many people have shown examples, there are long reigns that suck. People wanted Cena's head on a platter during his first reign. Diesel nearly killed the entire company.

You have to have a mix to achieve a good title reign. A decent amount of length with quality matches against quality opponents is always a winning formula.

yeah the quality is imortant, like when criss jericho was the 1st undisputed world champion no one really gave a sh*t. When you see a guy with gold all the time (more than a year title run) it get's old super fast.

Cena's first year long title run wasn't even noticed until King & JR started talking about it after he lost the title. they had to tell people he held the title for a year.

I don't mind frequent changes if it adds to the story which RAW is NOT doing, anyways that's another story.

I think one title could be held for a while, I personally wouldn't want a whole year, maybe 6 to 10 months but still, it has to be the right person. CM Punk has a good opportunity to do it this time round and it seems that they are pushing him much better this year in his current reign. A heel CM Punk would be quite enjoyable to watch a long reign of but we'll see how he goes.

It's been several years since a WWE Heavyweight
John Cena twice from 04/03/05 to 01/08/06 and 09/17/06 to 10/07/07 (barely missed a year long reign).

Cena's reign was a year long as of 9/17/07 which was almost a month before his reign ended in october.

So he barely had MORE than a year.
