Burying / Being Buried

Mighty NorCal

SHALL WE BEGIN?
This was literally the one thing, if anything EVER got posted in here, that I needed to do. Probably THE most misused term in all of the IWC.

Just because your favorite isn't winning all the time, he is not being "buried"

Even when he is losing all the time, clean, he is not being "buried". Not even close to it.

"burying" someone was something started in the territorial days, when someone was leaving a promotion under less than friendly terms. He would be jobbed to everyone and anyone, and get little to no offense....This was done not only in order to give the stars who were STAYING a chance to get some easy wins, but to devalue the leaving wrestlers ability to draw, both for himself, and for any rival promoters.

Thus, it is impossible to "bury" someone in the actual sense of the term in the modern age, since, hello, there is only one major wrestling promotion. There are cases in which the looser version of the term is used, relating to booking a guy into storylines or characters which cause him to lose credibility, but, again, this relates to the original concept of breaking someone down before they left town.

Furthermore, the actual use of the term is much more often used in reference to politics backstage, when you "bury" someone by talking about them in a way which makes them appear less credible to their peers and management.
